Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I want more. What am I supposed to do with myself now? You don't really expect me to be responsible and productive again after that, do you?

I'd love to wear those fashions, but alas my womanly body would not fair well in those styles. I'm loving the shoes!

Donna Marie, have you seen the BBC Bleak House? It was very good, but not as good as P&P, IMO. I don't know that there is ANYTHING as good as P&P, though.

I just read that contracts have been signed for a 4,5 and 6 season of DA.

But- I went back and watched season 1 via Amazon Prime, and, gosh darn, there were scenes in it that I don't remember seeing before! I have read that the British version does have more in it than what was shown on PBS ( and my PBS station did cut off part of the proposal scene in the last episode to go back to fundraising ).

For those of you who have seen the European version... does it have a noticeable amount of difference? There were a few scenes in the Prime version that I thought helped explain what was going on- motives, etc- that I either missed on PBS or were not in the PBS version. I am thinking: did I really miss that much? (granted, there was always a lot going on).

Anyway... now I am anxious to see the European version for season 2!

Okay, so you have totally intrigued me. Missing scenes...that might solve some of the areas I thought were choppy.

So, how to make sure you're getting the European version?

How long can they drag out the episodes? They seemed to zip right through WWI. Are they trying to get to WWII? Slow down the process and just get through Roaring Twenties?

The editing of British shows for American television is fairly common from what I understand. I watched the first season of DA on Netflix, so I don't think I missed anything there. But I know that Doctor Who has been edited for both PBS and BBC America...because I watched the first four seasons of that on Netflix, too, and one of my favorite scenes from the season 3 finale was cut for America.

Oh, it makes me feel better to hear that. I was wondering if I was going cuckoo or just not paying enough attention.

I just finished watching The Young Victoria (2009) and loved it!

It helped with the Downton withdrawals.

Lark Rise to Candleford
is another British miniseries that is interesting. I have only seen the first episode, but it has the actor who plays Mr. Bates in it (also the woman who plays The Vicar of Dibley and it looks to be very good...
not as dramatic as Downton, but the first episode was intriguing with a spirit of fun.

Amazon Prime has the episodes free right now for streaaming

ETA:

Synopsis: Rich, funny and emotional, Lark Rise to Candleford follows the relationship of two contrasting communities: Lark Rise, the small hamlet gently holding on to the past, and Candleford, the small market town bustling into the future. Seen through the eyes of young Laura, their inhabitants endure many upheavals and struggles as change comes and their stories become poignant, spirited and uplifting.
Season year: 2008
Network: BBC America

Great minds think alike, Melinda! My sister suggested this to me a few weeks ago, and I'm on the 5th episode. I was coming here to posted about it, but you did it first!!

It seems a little like a cross between a Little House book, Anne of Green Gables, Downton, and a low-key soap opera. English countryside, human interaction stories, and a young girl (who seems a bit on the edge of the story, actually) leaving home for the first time.

I'm enjoying it!

I LOVED The Young Victoria!

I also loved, “Her Majesty, Queen Victoria.” Judi Dench is the queen....I just love Judi Dench. My husband really enjoyed both of these movies as well.

kristacecilia--I loved Young Victoria!

SeaStar--I was hooked on the Lark Rise series. So sad when it ended. A very good show in my opinion. Watch it all!

Does anyone know where to watch Downton season 2 for free online?

I met the senior producer for Downton Abbey last week! She is very, very nice. She says that Elizabeth McGovern and Dan Stevens are so much fun to be around (non-Hollywoodish, in other words) and spent a bunch of time taking photos of themselves the first time they rode in a stretch limo.

Maggie Smith, while a great actress, is more reclusive; she is not fond of travel (or the press - can't blame her for that!) and so she is less inclined to do promotions for the series.

Another fun fact - no one, not even PBS, was initially interested in the series for the US market, but PBS instantly picked it up once their production execs saw the first episode. The producer describes working for Masterpiece as a dream job.

We spent a bunch of time trying to persuade her to organize a Downton Abbey river cruise with a few of the actors and technical experts...!!!

Oh, Nan- what fun!!!   I'm so glad you got to get the inside scoop.        You are mahvalous.

My PBS station has been rerunning DA episodes every. single. Sunday for weeks now. I think you might also be able to see some of season 2 for free on Youtube or Hulu.

I am not sure which show I like more - Downton Abby or Lark Rise!

My husband bought all four seasons of Lark Rise on DVD and has watched it with me. We only have one more episode left to watch

It's been so much fun recognizing actors in Downton and Lark Rise from other films - Dorcas is Lydia Bennett in P&P and Jessie Brown in Cranford (Julia Sawalha). Emma Timmins is Martha in Cranford, Mabel Nesbitt in Gosford Park, and Charlotte in the 2005 P&P (Claudia Blakley). Mary from Downton was also Erminia Whyte in Cranford (Michelle Dockery). The butler in Downton was Captain Brown in Cranford (Jim Carter). Jim Carter is married to Imelda Staunton (Miss Pole) IRL. Willoughby in Sense & Sensibility is Sir Charles in Cranford (Greg Wise). And of course Bates in Downton is Mr. Timmins in Lark Rise and Higgins in North & South (Brendan Coyle). The list goes on and on!

Downtown Abbey is Amazon's Deal of the Day. It is selling for 60% off the retail price.

I'm so tempted! By that, and by the new book.
