Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We watched the Superbowl and then Downton (DVRd it). Priorities you know.

We decided to watch it tonight, since it was so late.

I hope this is not a spoiler, but Season 2 ends without revealing who offed Mrs. Bates.

I'm thinking the murderer has a connection to Mary's fiance whats-his-name.

The whole Patrick thing seemed very contrived. For me, it developed and ended too quickly.

Oo, I wonder what Mary's going to do now that her secret is going to keep her stuck in a loveless engagement/marriage?!

I AM enjoying the show, but a lot of it seems contrived, developing and ending too quickly. It almost feels like WWI was awfully inconvenient for the writer so they had to get it out of the way.

I find the timeline hard to grasp. It seemed like more time should have gone by, but the baby was still so little. So, maybe not as much time passed as I thought??? It seems like months pass between episodes, but then they have conversations referencing past exchanges that make it sound like they haven't talked in all that time, which is weird.

I agree -- WWI was long and drawn out, and yet, it is over and done with -- poof! I'm confused, also.

The Patrick seemed very contrived to me, too. It was a way to bring a love interest storyline for Edith. Can't forget her, you know.

I have assumed that a lot of these various plot lines that seem to be tying up so quickly will be revisited later. I remember at the time that the whole Pamuk-love-affair thing seemed very silly and melodramatic, but that episode has become totally central to the current tensions. I'm trying to think the same way about some of the plot elements I currently see as flawed/rushed/unrealistic/etc. We'll see if the writers come through!

I agree. There is so much going on in the show.... sometimes it's hard to catch it all, but that only makes it more fun to watch. For instance, I think the farmer that Mrs. Crawley saved from dropsy with her radical procedure was the same farmer that Edith later worked with on the farm.

Ethel and her baby have me wondering. The father is now dead, so that seems like a finished plot line, and yet I get the feeling it's not. I wonder if they will succumb to influenza or be rescued by the baby's grandparents or what.

Any writer who can think up such smashing lines for Maggie Smith has got to have more tricks up his sleeve

Umm.....OK. Interesting that he thinks that way
But- it totally goes with my idea that watching House Hunters can be counted as geography, so I get where he's coming from.

Yippee- my library is getting a copy of The World of Downton Abbey.
I'm 9th in line! The pictures look fabulous... more eye candy

It's from The Onion, so it is a parody news story. It is funny, though, because we Americans do tend to think we are doing something intellectual if it involves British accents and period costume

Its just good television

Melinda, The Onion wouldn't be nearly so funny if it weren't capable of fooling us from time to time

Dawn recommended this interesting article:
Linguistics at Downton.

She had also mentioned a show on PBS Secrets of the Manor House, which we watched. Not sure if it's repeating. While dh and I found it interesting, we did feel there was a bit of "social" agenda and it really glossed over so many areas. We were expecting a bit more of realistic Manor Life. But it did provide much food for thought.

Very interesting article, Jenn. I had wondered about that. In the last episode
Matthew commented about Lavania "sucking up" to his mother. It was funny at the time, but I was surprised- I had thought that more of a modern phrase.

I am sad the season will be ending on Sunday
It has been fun for me- something NOT SCHOOL to look forward to each week

Here's hoping for some happy endings!

So, was last night the end of the show or is there a 3rd season?

I'm loving the Daisy storyline!

....and how long do we have to wait for season 3?!

At least I have an excuse to get the episodes of Season 1 I missed so I can keep it alive longer .

I keep thinking how I want to rework those fashions just for fun ...does anyone else get that bug?
