Oh, I love Mr. Foyle! Swoon! I can't wait for the new season.

My husband and I have been watching old episodes of As Time Goes By, a romantic comedy series from the early 90s, with Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer (who is the voice of Eeyore in our favorite Winnie-the-Pooh audio -- in this series he basically plays Eeyore in human form, which is hilarious). The story line is that Jean and Lionel were young lovers in 1953 who were separated when a letter went astray, and each of them thought that the other had gone AWOL from the relationship. They meet 38 years later, in middle age, and comedy ensues.

With lesser actors this would probably not be a terribly edifying show -- it takes extramarital sex very much for granted, for a start, though I don't recall, from watching it years ago, that any scenes are even as graphic as those of people in bed in Downton Abbey. But the lead characters are irresistible and very funny, and it's a delight to watch them. It's also refreshing to watch people in their late 50s/early 60s be romantic leads. I find the whole thing quite endearing, and my husband is totally hooked. Maybe you really do have to listen to The House at Pooh Corner on Audible (the dramatized version with Judi Dench, Stephen Fry, Jane Horrocks, and Geoffrey Palmer) to appreciate the Eeyore connection . . . but it is pretty funny.

Something to tide us over, anyway, while we wait for new seasons to start.

Sally

Oh, I love that show! Dh and I watched it years ago- then got the dvds from the library . Some of the scenes are hilarious, really.

I love how Lionel is always a bit befuddled somehow, even though he is a pretty smart guy. It's just all the women and everything they are up to all the time.... even Alistair is no match for them.

If you need a good laugh- it's a go-to show

I noticed that the World Market has lots of Downton Abbey inspired gifts-
shortbread, tea sets, napkins... fun!

There is a Gold Box Deal today on seasons 1,2,3...for $37 and $39. Not sure if this is a good price or not...but usually these Gold Box deals are good!

Bumping this up... tomorrow is the big day- Season 4 starts!

And may I just say that I hope it's a bit more cheerful than last season

I was very careful to avoid spoilers this year (unlike last year when I couldn't resist and found out all about Matthew's death before I started watching Season 3) so I have no idea what happens but I do know that this season was very controversial in Britain this fall and that many people were very upset.

I suspect, like with most good shows, that the writers/producers are running out of ideas. I think they should skip forward to the next generation. It would be set during WWII and would be about Matthew's son, Sibyl's daughter (can't remember her name now and won't google because I'm sure some spoilers would pop up and I'd end up going down that rabbit hole), and the maid's illegitimate son. Sibyl's daughter would fall in love with the maid's son who would be fighting in WWII along with Matthew's son.

I'll watch the first show, at least, but honestly I don't know how much I care about these people anymore. At this point, I think I'm really only interested in what happens to Lady Edith. Will they finally let her be happy?

I was so upset with last season that I'm not investing the time to watch this year. I am curious so I will probably check out what happens through the internet

Mysteries of the Castle: Beyond Downton Abbey

Heard this was really good, and you can watch it on line for free

I also avoided all spoilers this year, but I was a Matthew fan . I loved the sparks between him and Mary. I also liked how his character grew and matured during the first three seasons.
Not so much interested in Daisy and Alfred, etc. .... why hasn't Daisy taken up the great offer from her FIL to help run his farm and start a cottage business? Seems odd to me.

Our family is SO excited! Perfect timing - after The Voice and before Spring Training . And we're not all that invested in anything other than enjoying the ride

Love,

What Will the Ladies of Downton be Wearing?

This is a fun post from Leslie at The Seasoned Homemaker. Love those vintage patterns! (No spoilers, though- don't worry).

So, what did you think of last night? I was so proud of Cora when she gave Nanny West the boot! I was not prepared for that horrible comment the Nanny made, and it really made me angry.

As usual, Lord Grantham came off looking like a dope , but it was good to see Mary and Mrs. Crawley come back to life!

I think it was good that they started this season 6 months after the death - so that they could have them come out of grieving. It would have been too soon to do much if they started right where it left off. But all that grieving was off camera and enough time has past that they can focus on the healing through other interests.

I didn't like nanny either and thought that comment was horrible but I don't like that it was Thomas who helped them with that and is earning their trust - he and Edna have me worried.

Learning la vida Downton

We LOVED it! Cheered for the good guys, booed at the bad guys, tried to remember who Gwen was (red-headed maid who became a secretary with Sybil's help) and declared, "I don't trust that guy" and "Edith deserves some happiness already!" Oh, and "Daisy, too!"

Love,

I didn't really enjoy it. There were parts I enjoyed, like the costumes and seeing the characters I enjoy. But for the most part I was disappointed.

I thought Thomas was gone or at least changed. His character drives me crazy. He should have been reformed.

I dislike that the same dynamic of Obrien and Barrow is replaying. Same with Barrow and Bates conflict. And Lord Grantham story felt like a replay just with different characters.

I didn't follow the nanny problem, just thought it was Barrow with another power struggle--he lucked out on that one.

I disliked the Rose character last year and disappointed that she is back.

Edith's story doesn't look like it will end in good way.

In short, I thought there were so many people and story lines that my head was spinning trying to keep ups.

Don't mean to be so negative, but we we're bit disappointed.

I'm with you Jenn! Thomas drives me nuts! I actually thought in the beginning, when he was so sweet to little Sybil as the nanny was taking her for a walk, that they were going to change his character. Boy, was I wrong! I really like Branson, and can't stand the fact that Edna got to come back. My favorite characters are Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Carson. I like how utterly decent they are!

I agree with everything Jennifer said, BUT I loved it! I love the acting of the show and really could just watch this bunch do anything.

I’m not sure what I think....I am tired of the Thomas stuff, enough already. The nanny was creepy evil. I do think the actress that played Mary did a decent job of showing her grief....but I’m a bit emotionally removed after last year’s stuff. I didn’t watch it until last night on Roku.

I didn't understand why Rose seemed part of the conspiracy/cover-up with the O'Brien replacement

I am officially stopping watching Downton Abbey. Last night was just too disturbing and gave me nightmares all night. I am going to watch something pleasant like Jane Austen. DD thinks the same and will watch Sherlock at school. The boys will be glad to have the tv free for Sunday night football.
