Someone mentioned to possibility of Thomas converting after being shown grace? If Fellowes can draw on Jane Eyre, I wouldn't put it past him to borrow from Les Mis!
The whole thing about the roses and Mr. Moseley? Borrowed from Mrs. Miniver.
I am still confused about two things: Mary's "operation" and where Rose came from.

I wonder if Rose isn't just a new character introduced to expand what they can highlight from the era and the changes that were happening. None of the current characters would ever voluntarily go to a speak-easy in London (or club, or whatever it was called in Britain since they didn't have prohibition).
Yes, and all I can figure that Mary's operation might have been was something like an ovarian cyst? It was funny how they didn't want to talk about it, like the writers weren't really concerned with how accurate the situation might be medically but just wanted it to be there for dramatic purposes alone

My dd and I just watched the finale. Did not see that coming! Oh my. I thought this last episode was sad almost all the way aroung - Edith choosing to stay with a married man, the marriage of Shrimpy and Susan, the maid who tried to seduce Tom, the doctor almost proposing to Mrs. Crawley. Everything just seemed sad. But, the ending. I don't know what to think.

I was bummed that I had seen spoilers but in the long run it helped since I was not so shocked. It was still sad.

Me too, Mary. I knew what was coming.
Has everyone seen this statement from Fellowes regarding why he did what he did?
Quote:
After three successful series of Downton Abbey, Dan Stevens decided not to renew his contract beyond the initial three years he had been contracted. We wish him every success for the future. Michelle Dockery will be returning to her role as Lady Mary in series four which begins production in February, 2013.
Over the last three years, audiences across the world have been captivated by the ups and downs of Mary and Matthew's relationship, culminating in their wedding. Fans have enjoyed what has become a solid and loving marriage.
It is for this reason that the Producers decided Matthew and Mary could not simply be estranged or parted, resulting in his untimely and tragic death at the end of the series' finale.
In the next series, alongside all the usual drama, comedy and romance involving the much-loved cast of characters, viewers will see Mary adjusting to her life and attempting to move on without the man she loved. |
|
|
Honestly, I agree that it is less upsetting to have him die unexpectedly than it would have been to have them divorce or become estranged, etc..., since he really was leaving the show for good in some way, shape, or form. I can't blame the man for making it dramatic

I really am having a hard time with Matthew's death. I saw it a few weeks ago and still am upset about it. He was a main character! I think they should have replaced him instead of killing him off. I'm having a hard time figuring out where they can go from here. To me the show is over. Ok, I'm done venting! I'm sure I will still watch the next season even if I'm still upset about it next year. I am taking a break and not rewatching any episode for a few months in protest!

I did see that- an another interview along the same lines. JF did practically beg Dan Stevens to stay on. He offered him the option of making special appearances only in Season 4 so that he'd have acting more freedom but Matthew could still be alive- I think he was planning on a foreign posting for Matthew so that he would pop in and out of the show and still be a loving father and husband.
DS would not agree that. Then JF wanted to have him in just one episode of season 4 so he wouldn't have to kill him off during the Christmas Special, and DS still said no.
So his hands really were tied. I would have been more angry if Matthew and Mary had been made to split up somehow...
And now I just wonder if DS will have all the fame he is seeking now that he has left DA behind.

I don't know DS, but I would not assume he is motivated by fame. As an actor, and a young one at that, he may just be tired of playing
Matthew and scared of being type cast *because* the show is so very popular, which can happen. I think if it were fame he was seeking, he would likely feel more beholden to his fan base.
I mean, yeah, he kind of dissed us
But since by all other accounts he seems quite down to earth for an actor, I don't get the impression he is trying to be a prima donna or anything.

I saw that interview, Melinda. DH sent it to me, although I can't find it now. Julian did mention he left a series to do something, so couldn't fault Jessica and Dan for leaving.
I knew Dan was going to leave, so I was waiting for some kind of final ending. I thought it was well done, and the best possible scenario. He's happy and fulfilled, loves his wife and his child. He died perfectly happy.
If I were him I'd like to leave the show. His character was a bit flat and repetitive. There really couldn't be much story line for his character unless some kind of drama, which I'd prefer not. "Happily ever after" is how I prefer -- the ups and downs of married life, hard to portray in a good manner on TV.

...well...he hasn't been declared dead...
(which I say in true soap opera fashion: severely injured, taken to out of the way hospital, no identification, amnesia, disfigurement and plastic surgery, reappear later - oh yeah, that already happened with the "Titanic survivor" cousin...)

And that would be the biggest surprise of all... if he really wasn't dead. If they could pull that off, it really would be something.

Mary's totally right - Matthew may have survived!
Sign the petition at whitehouse.gov to force Dan Stevens to rejoin the cast or be deported!

Trivia question for the day...
What is Dr. Clarkson's first name?
Hint... I have no hint. I do not know. Does he have one?
William comes to mind for some reason, but I really have no idea.

Ah, Richard. Does anyone ever call him that on the show?
It seems like the men come in pairs: two Williams, two Thomases and now two Richards.
I guess those would all be very common names in England during that time.
Dr. Clarkson intrigues me... Why has he never married? (Maybe he was married and his wife died). We will ever see his house? Does he work with other doctors at the hospital? I wonder if his role will ever be expanded or if he will stay as a minor character.
There were a lot of exciting medical breakthroughs in the 1920's- it would be fun to see more of those on the show or have them incorporated in some way- as with the epinephrine injection in Season One.
