Just curious how many of you continue with Friday fish eating after lent?
My dh and I have always tried to keep up the Friday fast for penance and fasting throughout the liturgical year, not only in Lent?? There's no penalty for it if you don't obviously, but we like to try to keep it up, anyone else do this too??

we do, Meredith. We got away from it for awhile but I really was convicted to recommit to it this Lent. I was going to try to blog on it today.

We don't always eat fish but have been abstaining from meat on Fridays with more regularity.

We always skip meat on Fridays for those of us over 14. There is no obligation in this country from what
this article says but it is urged and recommended. (edited to clarify -- some form of penance is recommended, not necessarily abstinence)
Until I looked it up I always thought Catholics were obliged to do some form of penance on Fridays whether abstinence or not, but from what Akin says, the Code of Canon Law gave the local bishops the option to decide and our American ones decided that it was not to be considered an obligation, just a heartfelt recommendation.
Anyway, the bottom line is that meatless Fridays have become a habit around here! Have to look at that pasta recipe since we don't seem to have any fish in the freezer right now

Growing up we always abstained from meat on Friday, not just in Lent. Now that I'm grown and our family is veg, it often works out that if we eat out it's on Friday. And when we eat out, it's the only time we eat "meat." I always forget and order something with shrimp or lobster or crab which is hardly a penance. But I hope to be able to remember again someday.

We try to abstain from meat on Fridays throughout the year -- EXCEPT for during the 50 days between Easter and Pentecost. Those are days of celebration of the Resurrection, so we eat meat on those Fridays (and have lots of banana splits and good junky food, especially during "Bright Week" (this week)).

We ususally end up meatless on fridays by default, as I am too worn out to cook! For us, being a Cuban-American family, this usually means black beans and rice. Simple, satisfying, and even the kids know how to operate the rice cooker!

Well we grew up without meat on Fridays and as I was under the instruction that we are meant to perform some form of sacrifice on Fridays it is easier to do so as a family. We don't necessarily have fish, but we don't have meat.

This is most interesting! Our priest still talks about this obligation, so does this mean Australia is different to America on this issue?
You know the practice of self denial I believe is underated by many. Although it was something regularly practiced in my formative years it wasn't until my teenage years and beyond, that I experienced the impact that the earlier training had left. Self denial is VERY good for the soul.

Yes, Erin -- Willa's referring strictly to what the U.S. bishops have decided. I believe the universal norm is still abstinence on Friday, but the Church has left it to the bishops of each country to make final determinations about what they want.
We always do a form of penance on Friday here, too -- often meat, sometimes the giving up of something else (example: it's often more penitential for me to give up sweets than meat, so I will frequently do that instead of, or in addition to, meat.)

This is an interesting comment on US bishops, isn't it? I don't think abstaining from meat on Fridays is an heoric sacrifice. Why can't Americans be asked this simple penitential offering?

This was my thought too. We have abstained from meat on Fridays except the octaves of Christmas and Easter for many years but so many times it did not seem to be a sacrifice (except for my dh, who ironically is neither Catholic nor a fish lover), so as a family we forgo sweets and treats on Fridays as well.
Most of all this is a penance for abortion, something I agree with Elizabeth should not be seen as that much of a burden, which the Bishops conference apparantly believes. Regardless of what the bishops decide, I wanted my children to relate to the sacrifices of the universal Church (including those who have gone on to Purgatory and Heaven).
We are pretty consistent but if someone has prepared meat or a treat especially for us (for instance if we are visiting or traveling), we always accept and do a different penance. Also, we don't fast from treats during the Easter season.

Goodness, I hardly feel heroic eating fish... Maybe if I lived inland, and the fish were frozen, but on an island in the north Atlantic, fish is just what one eats  !
If you love fish/seafood, is it a sacrifice? Should I prepare a more plain fish dish, or continue to enjoy salmon teriyaki, sushi, escargot, or whatever? Sure, I love a nice steak or a fine lamb chop, but I certainly don't find fish a sacrifice.
OTOH, eating fish as a traditional reminder that many Apostles were fishermen is totally right in my mind. Is that a good enough reason?
I have heard that a soup and bread dinner on Wednesdays is also a good sacrifice (don't recall where I hear that). Thoughts?
