Oh! Along those lines....if you're collecting books for the slightly over 1yo age and just want to start building his *boy-brary* ---
Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion. Boys = dirt and dogs! Gene Zion hit on the perfect theme!!!
I know someone already said the Thomas the Tank Engine stories - these are PERFECT! FANTASTIC! BELOVED!
I could add more, but I'd be repeating all the other suggestions so far. They're tried and true classics and I'm nodding my head with all of them!

Last year for Christmas my youngest got bath toys by Alex Toys. We have the Dogs and the Basketball. It has been a HUGE hit every time he is in the tub!

Definitely trucks. Especially ones that can go outside and be filled with sand, dirt, rocks, etc.
And things to dig with (shovels, pails, small rakes, etc.)
Richard Scarry books have been popular with my toddler boys as have home improvement books like this one (Seriously. We are on our second copy because the older boys loved it so much).

speaking of filling dump trucks with dirt.. I have actually moved a significant amount of dirt in my garden by filling the boys trucks with dirt (about 3/4 of a shovelful per load) and they'd drive the truck and dump the dirt where I wanted.. they were 5 annd 7? I think and they had a ball and all I needed was a tiny bit of patience while I enjoyed watchign them drive their trucks around the garden. They certainly were more cheerful about their "work" than an older child would have been with the drudgery.

YES!!! That is the exact one I meant!! My boys "read" that book ALL the time and have for years. When my husband needs it, he goes looking for it in the toddler's bed
My oldest even decided to write a story for the first time just this week, and he wrote about how he and his brothers know about lots of different tools, and he had that book out copying the names

Okay, you wanted links, here they are.
These or something very similar are all toys that have been loved by my brothers or sons.
Rolling toys:
Pop corn popper roller Makes great noise that boys love, but not so bad that parents can't stand it.
Melody Push Chime They also like to use this one as a sledge hammer occassionally. No fear though, it's sturdy enough to take it .
Roll along puppy
Something to ride on:
Rocking dog
Push and Ride Bike Our sons LOVE having a toddler type bike or car in the house to truck around on! We put it away most of the time, but it is a favorite thing to bring out, and it really occupies them, even when they are just learning to walk.
Push and ride train
Push and ride walker Great for the learning walker.
Pushing wagon My brothers had one like this, and they LOVED it.
Misc toys and books:
Mr. Potato Head
Shape Sorter in boy colors
Pop up animals toy We loved the one at my grandmas when we were kids.
Tractor Board Book Our boys love this book.
Oh, and The Little Engine That Could, that was my older brother's absolute favorite book when we were kids!
John Deere Tractor and Trailer, good for toddlers. Our boys absolutely love tractors, and especially anything with trailers!
Super Spiral Speedway Boys love this!
This looked cute and fun for babies.
Toy car keys, and steering wheel
Chunky cell phone Our kids love this one, and it's less offensive then any other one they've been given.
Flip-Flop raceway I've had my eye on this one for a while. My brothers had something similar to this one, and they LOVED it.
Boyish Lacing Beads Our boys love these, will be approriate next year probably, but thought I'd stick them in there anyway.
Really Boyish Lacing Beads
Toy Tugboat
Toy Drum
A Foam Sword An essential boy toy! Make sure to get an extra so Daddy can teach him how to sword fight .
Any Animal Beanie Babies My brothers have a collection of all kinds of beanie animals, and would play all kinds of things with them, with the theme developing with their age, such as Redwall, and LOTR when they were older, with costumes and everything, and K'nex weapons. Pretty cool, and definitely not girlish.
Little People Airplane Boys love airplanes.
Little People Loader
Hope this helps a bit. With all brothers growing up I learned a lot about, and played with a lot of boys toys, and now get to enjoy watching our sons play, and see all over again the difference in how boys play. They even play with girls toys in a boyish way, like dropping toys off the roof of a doll house onto a person walking by! Anyone who says boys and girls aren't different is missing some links. Have fun stocking your boys toys!!!

We love OBalls!
All of my kids play with them with the younger ones. They even have a "football" one! They are virtually indestructible and easy to hold.
We also have:
Duplos
wooden building blocks
wooden railway sets (and the matching road set) with the extras
matchbox cars
But truth be told, my 3yo's favorite toys are:
his Pooh bear
rocks
dirt
worms
and boxes.
YMMV

Oh, one I forgot earlier, that our younger boy loves, it was gotten for the three younger children, and they all liked it, but the 2 y.o. boy kinda claimed it eventually,
Learning Bear
It is so cute! And a perfect snuggly for a boy, and educational to boot.

Okay,
Much of this will be repetition, but I will list all the favorites of my boys, in that age group:
Books:
Cars and Trucks and Things That Go by Richard Scarry
Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton
Dad's Car Wash by Harry A. Sutherland
Good Night Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
Make Way For Ducklings by Robert McCloskey
Toys:
Duplos (mentioned many times before! We had a number of farm and zoo ones- a definite favorite)
Wagon
Balls of every color and size and type (playground balls, bouncing balls, footballs, soccer balls, basketballs, balls, balls, balls!)
Fire Hydrant Sprinkler
Cozy Coupe Car(Our oldest received his the Christmas he turned one. He was in it all day long. This was such a favorite, we had to buy another a few boys later, as it was falling apart from love! I think Little Tykes still makes these?)
Matchbox cars and a play rug for them
Fireman hat
buckets to carry their treasures in
squirt guns and other pouring containers (I know these are more summer toys, but mine used them in the tub, too.)
Play-doh
These were their favorites when they were little (my youngest is now 7!.) We read a lot! Played outside A LOT! Boys are fun, fun, fun!!! (It's sort of funny, but I think they all stay little boys at heart , because everyone of them (from 7yo up to 23 yo) will jump at the chance to play with their little boy cousins with these toys!)

Oh my goodness!!!!@#$%$#@#%^%$#&*&^% A whole new world has just opened up to me after this thread!!!!!! THANK YOU, ladies!!!!!!!!!
I had NO IDEA that toys for boys could be so. much. fun!!!!!! I have just NEVER EVER EVER paid ANY ATTENTION to any boy stuff, right? So, the past couple of weeks have been so educational! DH and I spent an evening clicking through all the links and laughing so hard at all these things that we have never had in the house!
We got a couple totally great deals on Black Friday and Michael's godmother scored some hand-me-down Playmobile sets that she's hanging on to for a year or so! And, the relatives have a wish list that they can work off of!
Change does us all good, doesn't it???? I guess I was in dire need! I have a renewed vigor for my vocation as mother all of a sudden
Where is my opposite-twin-Maryan? Wanting to know if she's having fun thinking about girl-nonsense...oh..I mean girl-toys... as I am thinking about boy-toys!

Although, apparently Bridget's list would probably include DUCT TAPE instead of STRING!!

My laptop broke so I've been borrowing on my sister's computer, so I missed your plea for all things male.
We are so simple:
- Trains, planes, automobiles (including trucks)
- Balls, balls and balls
- Knights, capes of all kinds, and castles
- Legos, Playmobil and Lincoln Logs (we have Knex but they don't come out that often)
- Puzzles (especially the truck and dinosaur kind)
They mostly just like to be outdoors and explore. Or making forts with blankets and pillows if they are stuck inside.
Oh... and I'm so with Bridget...
Duct tape. Total must.
I long ago joked with Rachel May that if you have sons, you need all things adhesive because you/they are forever putting things (back) together. And it seemed to me (this was predaughter) that girls need more of things absorbent: more tp, kleenex, clothes, etc.
It is funny seeing how the other half lives!! On my end. My little one doesn't even walk because the little queen is carried by her princes all.day.long. When they let her down, she seems to like the few IKEA play kitchen supplies that the boys didn't break and... other little girls baby dolls (gave that idea to Gramma for her Christmas list). But as we don't even have a bedroom for her yet... I stopped there for girl toys. Really, really, really not ready for Polly Pockets. Playmobil pushes me over the edge!!
Oh and Suzanne.... my brother, youngest after six girls, is a fireman. Total boy. He survived even dressing up in dresses with sister #6.

Ha! Yes, this is!!! We have three large sticks on our front porch at this moment. Toilet paper, paper towels and wrapping paper are frequently "tubeless" in our house. We have a large hole in our backyard, that has no purpose other than for digging (and filling with water. ) I had to unwind and untie our car key on Sunday from a very long piece of string. And our 10yo used his box to make himself into a tv for Halloween (although he had no idea I why I wanted to put knobs and antennae on him, "What are those!")
I am scared to death of duct tape, though. We go through Scotch tape like there is no tomorrow. I have no idea what one creative and adventurous 7yo would do if he had duct tape at his disposal.
I'm so happy to hear about the fun you and dh are having with your "boy" gift-planning.
In Christ,
