Now that is beautiful! I suppose I could make an exception for the sake of art like that.

Saw some new pins on Pinterest that reminded me of this thread. I think this is such a great idea for storage on a bookshelf.

Altho i had a visceral "NOOOOOOO" reaction to the proposal to cut up books-have to admit that some of the alternate uses have been so creative and cute! Like Gollum, im always arguing with myself on this topic... Can i cut? Or not?
Rationalizations: Fwiw antiquarian book and print/map dealers have been cannibalizing folios and books for years for the images... Where do u think all those cute Mother Goose pictures, antique maps antique maps and 9x11 prints of the Colosseum come from? Those Audibon prints we all see reprinted come from prints taken from a folio- part of the reason an entire Audobon folio is so rare!
Also, books printed in the last 150 yrs or so use a printing process that is so acidic the paper gets crispy and falls apart-so if u remove an image to frame or laminate, u might actually be SAVING the picture or the page. Coffee table books from the last 50 or so years are often the worst offenders-they will not last well, fade etc. Vellum, used in the old days, is tough-thats why incunabula last and much of our current paper, filled w acid, doesnt!
Also-i agree-there r some books meant for the dustbin. Atvrisk of sounding like the thought police, ive taken pleasure in tossing a few that are pure tripe-and imho even evil.
Otoh before i start feeling 2guilty about tossing a book, i remind myself that my own town's public library was actually destroying (ie burning) their discarded books (mostly pre 1965)rather than dump them and subsequently discover that their employees were scavenging them and selling them on ebay! Talk about dog in the manger, huh?! True! Burning them so no one else cd make money from state-owned merchandise! I dont think worried people wd read them-these were the discards! Crazy world huh? Aesop meets Fahrenheit 450 (or was it 400? Haha fortunately i dont know the exact temp at which a book burns....
Anyway-dont know where im going w this but guess there are pros and cons both ways:-)
Ps i di think 1 does a service to mankind to cannibalize old text book illustrations-those old books need a new lease on life and iften have great pucs for art study;-)
