Oh can I commiserate!!! I just tried to check out books at another library in our system since dd and I happened to be in that town, and after spending all the time choosing about 50 books, we got to the desk to be told, you can only check out 2 more books on this card. Then I said "okay, well then we'll check out the rest on dd's card". Well then they tell me you can only check out 10 more on this card. I was in shock. How do you choose which books out of all those lovely books you were so looking forward to reading?????!!!!???? Come to find out, there is actually a 50 book limit on our system, but our dear library ladies at our small town library we usually go to happily just override the limit all the time, without saying a word about us being over limit. It is funny how the librarians will have different attitudes form library to library. The ladies at the branch we stopped at that day said it was "such a pain to have to override for every book", and the lady at our usual branch, just laughed when I told her that (have I mentioned how much I LOVE this librarian? Just love her!), she said "a pain?!?!, all you have to do is double click a little button for each book to allow the override, how big a deal is that?!?"
My solution that day? After walking out of the library with a tiny pile of books, feeling frustrated and embarrassed, I remembered that I had dh's card in my wallet for just such a need! I went back in with dd and asked if we could check the rest out on his card, and she said "sure!" I find it so silly and ridiculous that they all are going to the same house, and it's okay to have that many books In.our.house , but not that many on one card!
They also changed the limit on how many holds we can do last year, I think there was no limit before, and now we can only do 15 per card . So as many have mentioned, we just use multiple family member's cards. Like our librarian said "it is so silly, because everyone just uses multiple family members cards". I guess their reason was to try to reduce the amount of holds being transferred around the system to save $$$.

WOW! One question for all of you all? How in the world do you manage to keep track of so many books without losing them? That would be my downfall.

ohhh, Mary ...
(my DD helped pick out the emoticons)
in honor of this outrageous miscarriage of all that is right in the literary world, I shall immediately go run up my own card and hold requests. and I pledge not to grumble when we amass fees on our (much smaller ) number of checked-out books, which still occasionally manage to get lost in the chaos around here.
I know it's not much, but it's all I can offer. that and my utmost sympathy.
these stories of woe are giving me a whole new appreciation for our limit-less state library system. especially because if ever there was a system that could justify limiting hold requests, it would be Hawaii's, since they have to ship requests over by boat from the other islands. I never mind how long books take to arrive, since it's a whole lot easier than swimming to them! but in light of the current budget situation, I wonder how long that will last.
BTW, how DO you carry all your books? roller suitcase? wagon? small team of Colorado draft horses?
now ... off to the library!

Well, I do feel your pain because I used to live where we had an excellent library system (Alachua County, FL) and it was heaven to be able to check out unlimited books with no fines. Letting that go when we moved away was HARD!!!
But...
I also have to say... count your blessings! Where I live now I have NO IDEA what our limit is because they have so few books I can hardly ever find much I want to check out. So I've never bothered finding out what the limit is.

When we moved to Dubuque, the first thing we did was get library cards. DH moved into the rental July 1, and the girl and I joined him Aug 27. We had our cards on July 1. That day, we were told that each card has a 3 item limit for 90 days!!!! My poor children were devestated, we were at the library every day that we were visiting DH. By the time we actually moved here they knew us, and Sept 1 turned off the 3 item limit on our cards, 30 days early. My girls thought it was Christmas. LOL Now, we have a 100 item per card limit, which I can live with.
After 3 items, 100 is a dream come true

I had to share my devastating news here - as of yesterday - with no previous notice indicating a change was coming, our large library system has cut the limit of books you can have checked out per card from 300 to 100. |

WHERE is the 'grasping my throat, choking uncontrollably' emoticon when I need one???!!! MARY!!! What will you do?? Can you check out more in your children's names? Husband? Neighbor or two? I'm serious...

Ah, I see you've already thought of this and know that it works! SOOO grateful that the limit is 'per card' and not 'per family' !! I'd still have a neighbor or two as backup... And I will say it's inconvenient to have books spread across a bunch of cards. I inevitably miss due dates and rack up fines because of it.

I mentioned it in the organizing thread, but library elf allows you to consolidate multiple cards to one library elf account, so you can see all your stuff in one space and get reminders sent to you.
It is $20 a year, but I found that less than $2 a month was worth it to avoid fines.

- well I have a pile of 55 books to return today - I need to get at least 40 more to be able to start checking out things from my holds (but that would only give me one item ). How can I decide? We are in the middle of several topics plus I have all the new picture books that I am trying to read and review. I can start checking out other general books on my son's card but how to cull what I have currently enough to get to the limit....

They won't let you put your holds on your son's card? My husband used to put my holds on his card often.

I can put new holds on his card and proceed from there for the future - but the holds I have already requested and that are on their way are on my card, and no they will not transfer them and the system won't check them out to a different card.

Mary....can you take the 55 in to the desk/librarian, have them manually check them in, and then put them on another card?

Now that might work - sure they are going to love me for that. If it's one of our "friends" it would probalby be fine - if it's one of the new grouchy folk - ...

This was what I was going to suggest -- return and then immediately check out...unless they insist items be shelved first, in which case I'd say they're just *trying* to make your life miserable. If worse comes to worst, you can cancel your requests and then re-submit them on your son's card...assuming there is no penalty for canceling.

$20 a year is certainly less than I pay in fines. The sad part is that I'm inclined to be optimistic and think that anytime now, I'll get my act together and won't *accrue* fines anymore and should therefore save my $20. This is probably a pipe dream, so I should check into library elf...

Actually I was thinking along those lines - go in and say that I don't want the holds - "but oh, look, my son requested the same books and so you don't have to send them back to the other libraries - why don't you just check them out to his card now...."

SO, this is what I did and was able to get the last of my holds from that card .

Ours is 100 but what I hate even more is that they changed the lending time from 4 weeks to 2 weeks and that's just not long enough. Of course you can renew but if you forget. . . BUT our library does have the option on their website of getting an e-mail reminder two days before your books are due so that helps.
