So, what are you going to be for Halloween and All Saints Day?
I'm working on my boys costumes right now.
Last year for Halloween one was Robin Hood, the other was Peter Pan.
Then with the same costumes, they became patrons of hunters, St. Hubert and St. Eustace for All Saints Day. Our local homeschool group has a nice party, and our parish encourages the children to come to mass as their saint.
This year I am making one knight's costume, reusing another. So a knight for Halloween, and some soldier or king saint for All Saints Day. We haven't narrowed yet.
The little one keeps wanting to be St. Francis, so I'm working on making a little habit for him. We read many picture books this October and they have made such an impression on him. Now every time he sees the sun, he calls it Brother Sun and then calls the moon Sister Moon.
I'm the geeky kind of mom who LOVES to have an excuse to sew. I so rarely do anymore, but it's fulfilling to buy the pattern and make a neat costume. I know there are loads of ideas for no-sew kind, though.
But the clock is ticking. What are you plans?

Today, my oldest daughter is making a paper organetto for her St. Cecilia costume!
Then, we'll have an undecided, undecided, St. Rita, St. Therese for All Saints Day.
I love taping the thorn on the forehead for St. Rita.

I do NOT like sewing costumes. I made a bunch of adjustable tunics in different colors several years ago, and we just keep re-using those. My kids either make their own ensemble or use what costumes are in the dress up bin. I'm not really costume-people, so they are on their own in this department.

This is our first year dressing up--we don't do Halloween, and our parish doesn't have an All Saints party, but we're having another family over this year for a little All Saints party of our own.
My girls are going as St. Bernadette (2yo) and Our Lady of Lourdes (5yo). My boys will be St. Joseph (5yo) and the Child Jesus (1yo). They really wanted to be "pairs." Still undecided on baby girl.

I found a great tutorial on making no sew capes.
No Sew Capes
My oldest is going as St. Elizabeth Ann Seton so I made a fleece cape in black and I'll make a simple bonnet today. The boys are not at all interested yet, but I love the tunic idea.

Well, we're *always* last minute with every project and craft. So I'm sure I'll be assembling costumes Sunday night. Have no idea what those will be yet. And don't really know what we're going to do yet either.

Well, the boys picked St Luke and St John (and, of course, the 3 year old picked St. George).
I'm thinking a scroll and quill for John?
Luke??
I was pretty surprised at their choices.
I thought about having them dress AS the symbol, but I don't think that an eagle or an ox would be any easier.
They also decided that the baby should be the serpent under Mary's foot  Not planning to dress up the baby.

7yo will be a lion (brown sweats, gold shirt, face paint, crocheted tail) for Halloween, then Saint Jerome's Lion for our parish All Saints party.
9yo has a sort of gladiator costume we found at the thrift store, so will be some kind of sword-swinging type of dude for Halloween, and Saint George for All Saints.
13yo says he will be a homebound homo sapiens sapiens for Halloween, and probably Blessed John Henry Newman for All Saints.

Could you have them dress in generic apostle clothing and then hold their symbol (stuffed animal eagle and ox w/paper wings) or have it pinned to their front (felt or coloring page)?

Our baby won't be here in time for Halloween this year, but ds is already planning for next year. So far his ideas are:
Ds is Thor, and baby is Thor's Hammer.
Ds is Luke Skywalker, and carries baby dressed as Yoda on his back.

The BABY ideas are just cracking me up! Children can be so creative. Yoda on the back could really work!
Lindsay, I often wonder what people without a stash of fabric, felt and random paint and craft supplies *do* (especially if they're asked to help with, let's say, MOLES for Mole Day and it's the night before they're due and lots of odds and ends are needed to complete costumes...). Glad you have felt.

For halloween this year I want to have read-alouds of Fr Joe's SCARY STORIES! Cuddle up in the big bed with the kids and scare ourselves silly!
St Sebastian's arrows? If you could sew little round magnets into St S's outfit and then have little magnets glued to the end to some very lightweight straight kite wood with arrow feathers at the opposite end, would that work???

It's really hard having a melancholic youngest child, who can't decide what he wants to be, so vacillates for weeks with different choices... pushes even his procrastinating mommy to the brink .

Heh. Since his big sister went to college, he's lost his partner in many forms of silliness, including dressing up for Halloween. Not only is he a very tall, mature-looking 13 (will be 14 on All Souls), so people think he's too old to be trick-or-treating, but he also remembers at least one old lady who shut the door on him and his fellow Boy Scouts when they were selling popcorn in the neighborhood, and he's afraid they might remember him. So he's going to stay home and hand out candy instead.

well I managed to get Piglet and Tigger, Tinkerbell, a cat, 2 pirates, a princess, "Mister Smartie Pants" and a snow queen.. all ready and out for trick or treating
Well actually the snow queen stayed home to hand out candy. And the baby got glitter-ized by being passed around while getting everyone ready to go. 
I wish your son could have trick or treated here.. my policy is.. if they're dressing up or in charge of younger kids.. they should get a treat

Oh, no, he really was being funny, don't worry. He truly didn't relish being the only teenager out with a bunch of younger kids, *and* he's pretty aware that the older people in our neighborhood feel threatened by anyone ringing their doorbells in the evening, especially if it's teenagers.
He and I traded off answering the door all evening while my husband was out with our two younger kids and, ultimately, about 20 of their friends from church and those friends' friends. We were laughing about the various things the kids at the door said to us -- one little boy asked my son if he could stay and play at our house (I guess our house just looks fun; my kids think it's boring as all get-out), while I had one kid of about eight go, "I know there's something I'm supposed to say, but I forgot what it was!" I said, "Well, happy trick-or-treating," and he said, "That's IT!!"
Funnily enough, my son was the one who got all the 40-year-olds with trick-or-treat bags. And he thought he was too old . . . It's a weird world.
