Oh Dawn, yours is wonderful!    And your food writing experience is obvious. wow, making rounds of the food blogs is way better than reading the food section of the paper...and anyway, ever since chemo days, the smell of newsprint has made me . Can't figure out why, but it's a weird thing for a newspaper columnist . Much better to read in little bits online and so to hear the voices of friends. Okay, Lissa, now I'm getting that "over the backyard fence" feeling for real!

Keep it coming, ladies!!! This is so exciting.

Now I have a question: would you ladies mind sharing (in your spare time) how you became such good writers? I can write a good recipe, but my prose is sadly lacking. I'm planning to take writing classes this year, but a critique from you ladies or at least suggestions on how I can improve my writing will be much appreciated. I don't know if you know this but there are little "cliques" all over the food blog world and while I can ask a whole bunch of people these questions, I'm much more comfortable asking it here:D.

And now a challenge for all of you : if any of you feel like it, there are two major monthly food blogging events that I join once in a while, and I'd *love* it if some of you gals joined too -- one is the IMBB (see ismyblogburning.com) and the other is SHF (sugar high fridays -- which is excellent inspiration for teatime posts). I haven't been joining much lately because I don't quite feel the camaraderie it had in the earlier days when only a few people participated, but if some of you were doing it, I'd love to do it again.

I will admit to having an ulterior motive -- lots of food bloggers provide history bits and information about where their recipes come from, but there is very little said about faith or liturgical celebrations or if there are any, they usually have to do with secular or pagan celebrations and such. Participating in these worldwide events is a chance to educate people (including ourselves of course) about Catholicism, our history and our traditions. A lot of these food bloggers might not ever homeschool, but they may just look at Catholicism in a new light based on our posts.

Of course, we could always come up with our own food blogging event and just have it announced at IMBB (I am not kidding).

Can I ask a related question? What is the general consensus on copyrighting of recipes for blogging? Am I allowed to share a recipe unchanged that I found in a cookbook? Online? I don't want to copyright my OWN recipes, just want to avoid being sued or something.

hi amy, there's been much debate on this. some sources say as long as you're not diminishing the sale-ability of a book by printing a bunch of its recipes online, then you should be fine. other sources say you really should rewrite the recipes yourself. the latter is what i do for the most part, since a list of ingredients can't be copyrighted, but the instructions can. otherwise i try to link to a copy already online (regular google as well as books.google.com help a lot here), or simply mention the book with maybe a link to amazon. i do know that most food bloggers don't even bother with these and just copy the recipes directly.

It's kind of a strange thing because they're my words (thoughts, text and research) but technically they were published by the paper. I do add a dated tagline crediting the paper as the source at the bottom.

what was your original agreement with the newspaper, dawn? i am currently writing for b5media and the agreement is that they have "forever" rights to my stuff as long as they give me credit for the content. however, i am not allowed to put the same exact post on my blog, though i may link to it, or create a similar (rewritten post) if it is to appear anywhere else online. at the same time though, i can have the exact content appear elsewhere (in a book, magazine, newspaper, etc.) as long as it's not at the same time it's appearing online. this online-offline business is tricky at best. perhaps you'd like to talk to your old editor?

I own the copyright to all my columns, even though the Herald frequently grants permission to republish--never understood that. A quick check with the paper will establish your rights. If they retain the rights, you can easily tweak your pieces to reflect your current life, make them more personal and republish.

I will contact my old editor and/or the paper and see what's what. It's been *so* many years since I wrote for them, and I don't think they have any of my old stuff online (they have bigger fish to fry these days ).

Dh dragged out all the old clippings and there's a lot so I would like to use them if I could. I was thinking I might tweak them a bit anyway; reading through them, it doesn't really sound like me ~ the *me* I am now anyways.

Stef, I love your blog and I love your writing style. I just came from there and your new design is GORGEOUS!! I'll be spending a lot of time there ~ my dh is lactose-intolerant and youngest ds is on the Feingold diet and somewhat GFCF.

Speaking for myself, you are *far* too kind. I do not think I am a good writer just a very *chatty* one. I find it very easy to write (and talk) and I guess that's why I write (and talk) so much! As I said in my p.m., when I told my old editor I was starting a blog, she said the best way to improve your writing is to do it a lot and blogging is a great way to write a lot.

On the other side of the coin, though, I was (am) very intimidated to keep a *food* blog because I am no Ina Garten or Martha Stewart. Most of my old articles are on an entertaining slant ~ all about the "accoutrements" and peppered with other people's recipes. I can follow a recipe fine, but I'm not very good with making stuff up on my own!

So I have a lot to learn too! That's what I *love* about being part of this community, here at the boards and now in the blogsphere too. You all are so great as friends *and* teachers!
