Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My big concern with doing large chunks of reading is that so much will be lost on them because they simply won't/can't remember and absorb all the information from 30 pages. I don't think they could narrate it, either. That sounds like a LOT.

With just 3 or 4 pages of reading they could narrate it and absorb what they are learning. But if you do really short readings with narration you can never make it through all the readings that CwH assigns. Not that I could figure, anyway.

I know it's too much to really absorb or narrate -- I'm trying to figure out how to tell them that. Do you assign them 4 pages or whatever and insist they stop after that? What if they want to keep going? This is just a new approach to reading for our family and I'm not sure how to implement it.

Yes. I have the assignments written on a sticky. So, in a book where the chapters are long, I write "pp. 37-40" or whatever. Sometimes a page is an illustration or there is a clear break, so I just skim the book to determine the pages for the individual assignments. Ds marks off the assignment on the sticky as he reads it, so that next time he is assigned that book, he just does the next assignment on the sticky. You could even have them use the sticky to mark the end of the reading assignment before they begin so that they know to stop when they get to the note. If they want to keep going, too bad

I'm leaning towards using the beginner level books for our core rather than grammar level but having a lot of the grammar level literature around if they want to read them on their own.

These supplementary books are books they can read at their own pace. But for assignments for narration, the discipline of reading the book slowly and absorbing it over time is emphasized.
