I just wanted to share this with you. I found it on another forum and it looks like a great resource for young children!

This has been on my list of things for DS when we do a year of grammar next year. It looks so fun!

We just got ours. I showed it my dh over the weekend and mentioned how the girls will be reading a chapter per week from it. He really liked it and said how he wished he could have read all these great books.

How's the quality, Jenny? Is it a good facsimile?
Yesterday's Classics also carries this in paperback, but it's totally reformatted (but with original images).

I just went ahead and ordered it..... along with a few other I have been eyeing. A CM education isn't nice for my bank account. ;)

It is a nice very sturdy small book 7x5, the pictures are black and white and it is a reproduction of the 1889 fourth edition. Does not look like a printed version of a scanned copy but a reprint of an original. It is published by The British Library.

I got the $1.99 Yesterday's Classics edition on my Kindle rather than the free Google book because I wanted the clickable table of contents.
The Kindle version does not have the images, so I cut and pasted the images from the Google book version into a Google doc so I could print the images out for dd.
My idea was for her to use them to make a little exercise notebook. She can glue the image to the top of a page, then below that do the exercises at the end of each chapter.
Here is the link to the file if anyone wants it:Grammar land images

I love your creativity Theresa! You are making up for my dearth of brain cells. I continue to repeat: "There should be brain cells in pre-natal vitamins!"
Ok, off to try and remember the thingy that I was supposed to remember to do this morning....

What age range for this book? Is it geared more for upper elementary?

I will be using it with my dd age 9.
ETA: She will be 10 by next school year when I'll be using it.

This is meant for my older dd's (11) schedule. Her sister (will be 8 this fall) can listen if she likes but I'm thinking that when we get to later chapters while entertaining she might not understand (or do I expect her too) such things as prepositions, nominative & objective case, and conjuctions.

Do you think it's too advanced for an 8 year old who reads above grade level? I just read part of the first chapter and felt like he would be good with it now, but maybe I was mistaken. He already knows the basic parts of speech.
Maybe I will use it in 4th/5th grade along with a year of intensive grammar?

This is the first time we'll be reading this, so it's hard to evaluate. I'm personally just keeping my expectations at a read aloud comfort zone for my younger dd. If anything this might be a good introduction to Grammar even if it isn't all picked up. When we start focusing more intently on grammar she might have some fun/creative references to look back on.

I'm glad you shared that older thread, Erin!!
We enjoyed Erin's review of Grammar Land so much that I incorporated this book into our Morning Basket of work for that year. The book makes a FANTASTIC read aloud, particularly if you enjoy assigning *voices* while you read. All of my kids were enthralled and in fact, I put it on my 6th grader's (10yo) independent reading this year for a review (since this is a grammar-formal year for him), and he BEGGED for me to put it back into the Morning Basket as a read aloud.
It's definitely a good book to read through V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W-L-Y over the year, not because of content being so deep and taking time to digest, but I found that going slowly meant we could focus on discussing the part of speech through our studied dictations and it really helped solidify the (Grammar Land/part-of-speech) lesson for my older daughter.
I'm so glad to see Theresa's link as well as the audio links! I'll have to check those out because this book is a staple of our language arts offerings now!!

I wanted to add another suggestion to this list, I Laid an Egg on Aunt Ruth's Head. This is a local author/homeschool dad that created this book.
Personally I haven't used either Grammer Land or Aunt Ruth's Grammar, but of friend of mine has used both and RAVED about Aunt Ruth's Grammar.
I will be using the book and worksheets this year!
ETA: You can just order the book through Amazon, as well!

I was just looking at Grammar-land and thinking of doing at least the early chapters, with the parts of speech, with my youngers, who will be almost-8 and 9 when our year starts after Labor Day. We'd do it just as a read-aloud, to help us start noticing parts of speech in our reading and writing. Then I think I'd save the later chapters for later on . . . use it almost as two separate books. Waddya think?
