PAYDAY - we have the old version. Since I've seen some games that were really popular when we were kids and not liked how they have been modernized, I'm sort of a purist about keeping/acquiring the older versions that I loved as a kid.

I almost posted it too, Jen. We have my old version from the 70s. The kids really enjoy it. I used to love it. Now I feel like it is playing real life - mailbox full of bills and not enough money at the end of the month...yeah, I want to play that for fun...

I especially dislike the new versions of Candy Land.... the characters are so scmaltzy somehow.
Pay Day... that takes me back!

A lot of great suggestions already. Don't know if Monopoly or Monopoly Jr. was mentioned, but the banker gets lots of math practice.
Almost any game which requires scoring can be great math practice. Our dd was always the designated score keeper and this kept her addition/subtraction math skills sharp.
A fun one is Pass the Pigs. Two small pigs are tossed and you get points depending on how they land. Scorekeeper does a lot of adding.

Oh I loved this game! I think it's still in the game closet somewhere. Thanks for the reminder!

I'm so glad something I've contributed here is at all useful to someone. It's one of our favorites too, but it's been a while since we've played also.

Dino Math Tracks
OK- I don't recommend this one unless you want your kids lining up for a chance to play it with you at 6:30 every morning .
(ask me how I know ).
I was hesitant to buy it after reading some of the reviews on Amazon about the board being crowded and mistakes on the printed cards. The card mistakes have apparently been fixed (no problems here), and the crowding is not so bad with only 2-3 players.
This has really helped my dd with place value for larger numbers... remembering that the ones are always last, etc.
I also like that the three levels of play let the game "grow" with your math skills. (PLus, at my house, anything that comes with little plastic animals as the game pieces is sure to be enjoyed. )
If you have littles, it is good to know that the dinosaur pieces are small but not tiny. Probably could be swallowed (some of them) and bear watching.... but they would be a real mouthful.

Thanks for this review. I added the game to my DS's wish list on Amazon. He loves Money Bags (his favorite) and Sum Swamp, so I bet he'll like this one too!
I LOVE learning math with little ones by playing board games.

Picked this one up at Tuesday Morning, and it seems very promising
Have You Herd?
One of the reviewers shares the history of how the game was created in Poland during WWII by a math professor.... kind of neat

We like Equate... I didn't see it mentioned here, but I may have missed it! It's a bit like Scrabble, but you build equations instead of words. If you get the expansions for older students, it can be fun for a long time. I have to say that I really enjoyed playing it with the kids.

Check Math
I recently bought this to use as a fun game to help ds learn his multiplication tables.... which it has done
BUT: watch out
I told my dh that this game makes my brain hurt. It looks so simple, and it is, but it so much more... some Australian guy invented it as his grad school project. Whew! I hope he got extra credit.
This game starts out like checkers but rapidly progresses into a challenge of the mind that makes you have to think two or three or four moves ahead. If you have a math lover at home or need a challenge, this is it.
I would say it requires more strategy than chess as the game goes along.
I told my dh it was challenging, and he was skeptical... until he played it with ds. Then his comment was: "It's devilish".
I am laughing at myself because this game is so much more than I bargained for. And yet, at the same time, it is great for learning the times tables, and not too hard to a younger student (whose brain is probably more flexible than mine...)

Thought of a few more we have....these are for older math students but they are FANTASTIC and quite challenging!
The Wff "N Proof games are fantastic logic and math games (and there are some language games too)! They aren't cheap, so if you ever come across a set used, BUY IT! We have and really enjoy:
Equations
Wff 'N Proof
Configurations
...and a few others that aren't math oriented. |

We LOVE the Wff'N Proof games! I never realized someone had already linked to them on here. You are the first person I've "met" (in a manner of speaking) who knows about them! I played Equations in school growing up; and wanted it for my son - found all their other games.... and well.... we've not made it to Equations yet - we're having too much fun with Shake-a-WFF and Configurations!
I've been recommending them to lots of people - I hope they update a couple of their images soon (computer discs....)
