Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Mimi, your cousin in Tuscaloosa is ok???

Yeah, she is fine but her husband, a coach at Bama had quite a scare near the stadium.

She grew up here in S. FLA with me and says that it was so much scarier than when hurricanes come because of the unpredictability of the whole thing.

I'm still praying for all those victims...

The tornado that hit Arab and the Ruth and Union Grove communities where we live passed less than 1/4 of a mile from the shelter I was in. Please, keep this family in your prayers.

Continued prayers.

Jen, I logged in on my phone to see if you were alright. I am sorry to hear about the damage. Our part of town also got badly hit, and the site of complete devestation is incredibly heartbreaking. I will never forget the fear I felt when I heard the twister blowing outside our friend's storm shelter. I heard the sirens in my head for hours after the storm had passed. We are about to put our house on the market, and now we are praying we are able to find one w/ a basement. It is just wrong that there are so few in this area.

We now have a generator (thank you amazon o/n shipping!) And gas-heated water, so we are doing very well compared to others. Continued prayers for you all! I hear May may bring more storms...I am just sick with fear and feel so powerless. Thank God for his mercy and protection.

Michele and Dana, so glad you are checking in and are fine. It is surreal. I can't believe the pictures I am seeing, and knowing you guys are living it is so hard.

Jen did let me know they have a generator now as well.

My situation doesn't even come close to what others are going through. The thing w/ tornadoes is how sporadic and unpredictable they are. It is unbelievable how much devestation occurred just a few miles from me.

So glad to hear Jen got a generator! We spent an arm and a leg for one, but we were able to save a lot of meat in our deep freezer, and it allows us to stay put and not spend a ton of cash on a hotel. (And who wants to squeeze into a hotel room w/ littles? So much easier at home where there is lots of space to release their energy!)

Hi all.

Just wanted to pop in for a minute to thank you all for prayers. We are still without power here and still doing clean-up. This is our sixth day of no power. (I edited...this is our sixth day, NOT eighth day of no power!!! LOL!! Apparently my higher math skills have been affected by all this candlelight!!) We are doing well and are hopeful that tomorrow or the next day we may have power restored.

I must tell you - my smartphone has paid for itself in spades during the immediate aftermath of these destructive storms. I'm able to post here now...from my phone. Admittedly, that isn't a need (though I like staying in touch with all of you!!), but when all of North Alabama lost power, and cell lines were down, the only thing small enough to get through was a text message! It was our only link to the outside world for a couple of days. During the terrible storms, we had no power, but we could get online with our phones and see the radar and storms coming. It was the only way we knew the last tornado was coming.

This phone has been an unexpected but integral tool in our ability to stay informed, safe, and survive the last week. If you had asked me a week ago about survival gear, a cell phone would have been on my list, but not something I'd put at the top of the list. Today, after this week, I can tell you that for survival, safety, and staying updated with important information (like finding gas stations that are open, a grocery store open, etc) a smartphone (that can text, store information like lists, can get out to the web, has pertinent maps and weather apps, can send/rcv email, has an updated contact list of numbers and contact info for insurance, family, neighbor, pastor, etc) is an important tool and ranks HIGH on my list!!!

That's it from me tonight. The sun is going down and that means time to light the hurricane lamps. I continue to remember all of you and all of my neighbors here, so devastated by these storms, in my prayers. This week has been full of challenges and learning that has allowed our family to grow together, and for that I'm grateful. Hope to be back soon!!

Thanks for prayers for our area. Please continue to pray for those who lost lives - and those who are still searching for their loved ones. Also pray for the families who are now planning funerals.

The sheer volume of recovery is going to take quite some time. Pray for continued strength for those who are trying to clean up and work at restoring power. The utility crews have been working round the clock. They are bound to be exhausted about now and yet there are still many in communities without power. Our power (in a pretty untouched community and not that close to a devastated area) just came on today. Areas closer to the devastation, are still without power. Many of the first responders live in the communities that they serve and most have friends who lost homes, some even know those who died. Some have damage to their own homes. These folks had to be exhausted after 2 days of search and rescue - and now they (and their families) are trying to provide continual clean up and support and still responding to normal calls. Please keep them in prayer as well. Many probably don't have power at their own homes.

We have been fortunate that no one we directly know lost their lives. Normally I worry a lot when dd #2 is out, but this time I didn't for some reason - false sense of security, I guess coupled with all of the prayers we weren't even aware of. As a first responder, she was out and about in the thick of this and we are so glad she is safe. (They had to move their staging area many times due to being in harms way and she saw 4 of the 5 tornadoes that hit the community up close). Many communities that they serve were hit hard and repeatedly.

Our oldest dd does know many whose rental apt./ homes were destroyed in Tuscaloosa. She has friends whose friends are still searching for a loved one. She was able to make contact with everyone she knows (or get a face book response from folks who could tell her that they were ok because they were seen in a work crew, though no idea of the status of their lodging) and we are grateful for that. Many of her friends lived right in the path of this devastation or very, very close to it - it was an area mostly populated by students (upperclassman and graduate students) so you can imagine the grief of many parents right now. Please pray for her friend's friend (we'd love for the young man to just turn up with some reason why he has not contacted anyone yet - but it isn't likely at this point and so if he has died, please pray that his body will be found soon and for his family who is going through a lot right now.

There were so many devastated communities spread over quite a bit of the state. As you have a moment in your day, please offer an Ave or two for these folks.

Thank you.

Janet

Please also pray for a friend, Luke, who hasn't contacted his family to let them know he's okay. He lives on the UAH campus, and my husband went to check on him, but he can't find him or his car anywhere. He reported the situation to campus police, but there has been no word yet. His family lives 6 hours away and are worried sick. The tornado didn't hit the campus, but we have no idea if he was visiting a friend or whatever in the path of the storm.

Praying that those who are still w/o power get it back soon! We got ours back yesterday...I almost kissed my washing machine and oven.

Jen. I was around the corner when that midday storm hit! It was pretty scary. I left right after the break to try and make it home(white knuckles all the way home)I had a hard time finding my way home. We had to turn around 2xs because of trees across the roads. They already had some powerlines down going along side of the road and in the roads. I am glad to hear you are OK! Please let us know if you need help - I have boys that can carry branches to the street!!!
