I don't think we even have time for anything as a family on Holy Thursday! DH doesn't get home until almost six and if we want to make the liturgy at 7 we have to leave at 630. How do you guys find the time to do this all? |

This is where I admit that we don't go to mass on Holy Thursday. I used to, and I plan on doing it again in the future, but right now it's not a good choice for my family's circumstances. I would never attempt a big dinner like that on a work day AND mass- I would move it to Wednesday or skip it.

No set plans here, especially since I'm just now inching my way out of an extended period of illness. Thankfully dc are older and have taken the lead all throughout Lent, preparing things for Mass and extra Lenten activites. Just this afternoon one ds was ironing costumes for a solemn, reverent Living Stations dc are participating in this Friday. Family life seems to have taken on a life of its own this Lent, without too much effort on my part, for which I am eternally grateful. Perhaps God is gently whispering to my soul that all the extras are not really necessary...perhaps dc are reaching a new stage of maturity where they begin to help out in certain areas of life without as much guidance from dear ol' mom....perhaps I've been sick enough that my dear family has been been inspired to pitch in a little more to lessen life's burdens. Whatever the case, I've am truly thankful and feel incredibly blessed!
For all you moms caring for many littles....take heart!!! Oneday all your hard work will pay off, when the training and example you give your dc bears much fruit! I do think nurturing certain traditions all these years has made things more conducive to dc stepping in to make them happen, even when I may not be able! There's something to be said for doing small things, faithfully and consistently...weaving them into the very fiber of our lives and into our souls! No need for things to be overly grandiose or extravagant...a few traditions gently anchored in daily life or in yearly celebrations of feastdays may even make a stronger impression on our loved ones than when we go overboard and satiate ourselves so much there's no room for contemplating the mystery and wonder of it all! Dd and I were just discusssing how we barely scratch the surface in our understanding of how much grace is contained in so many simple acts of Faith, such as blessing one's children! Imagine how much more grace must be poured out upon us in times of prayer and through the sacraments!!! May God's richest grace and blessings flow abundantly in each and every one of your families during all your Holy Week and Easter celebrations and all throughout the ongoing Easter season!
*Note to self, and anyone who might be interested....Divine Mercy Novena begins Good Friday! Tradition! Sung in the best (pitifully weak) Tevya voice I can muster!

Servant,
Your post brings me to happy ! It was gentle, encouraging and inspiring! How overjoyed I am to just be at the beginning of seeing some of those fruits from the work of building simple, small family traditions and the good habits formed in earlier years. And here I am....still very much in the trenches.
God bless you for your dear reminders to live out the beautiful riches of this holy season allowing for simple time to connect with some of the great mysteries offered to us!
My current list of remaining work:
** Plan and shop for Holy Week menu.
** Easter Sunday menu planned - CHECK!
** Sewing basket needs attention - both girls need their Easter Sunday dresses hemmed and 14 yo needs her dress tailored.
** Both boys could use new Sunday pants.
** Follow the Church in Her wise example of shrouding images (this past Sunday) and moving our home more toward opportunities of silence.
** Prepare the family basket stuff - these are simple and include books, small practical gifts, and a little candy/treats. Shop for treats. NO EASTER GRASS here either, Jodie!!
** Holy Week books out.
** The first three days of Holy Week are dedicated to cleaning the home in preparation. All hands on deck!
That's about all I realistically expect to accomplish. Everything else will be icing on the cake!

Dh begins his new job this coming Monday and while I am about that I'm also a little too because I have an active toddler who is sooooo used to have her daddy home with her all day that she's going to have culture shock and be needing me a little extra I think.
All that to say I'm trying to get as much accomplished this week as I can. I need to REALLY get some cleaning done: sweep all the hardwood floors; wash the kitchen floor; wash bathrooms etc.
We're hosting Easter for the first time this year but the menu is all planned out & everyone coming brings a dish so that's not too bad. But I still need to get extra tables & chairs from my mom.
I also want to try to bring in a few small but meaningful traditions for Holy Week. While my dd is only a toddler I feel like if I don't begin now I won't in the future either So now I'm off to browse through past threads for inspiration!

ACK...I just looked at my boys and they need haircuts! I also need to have them get out their Easter outfits to make sure we have everything we need to look formal and handsome. We're not able to get new outfits this year so I'll need to find a way to get a little something new...ties?...a hair clip for me?
Can you believe that I often completely forget about the colored eggs? Dh does that with the children on Saturday.
Oh, I've found 2 new recipes to bring to our friends' Easter celebration in addition to our usual stuff - a cold orzo salad and a ham and cheese appetizer. I'll let you know how they turn out.
Love,

ties or dress shirts are some of the few things you can often find second hand for boys
