Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

LOL! Yes, I didn't quite finish my thought. I bought the 2 inch and they felt small...the others felt a little better in the hands, so not because of the choking did I switch.

I LOVE the cute peg dolls! My Joanne's and AC Moore has good pegs like these, but Micheal's doesn't. I will admit that I've been backing off the peg dolls personally. I made a bunch of priests, nuns, and altar servers. Then my kids played with them in their doll house. The nuns were married to the priests and the altar servers were their children.      I determined this is all they know, so that's how they're going to play with them. So I packed them up. Anyone have any suggestions about how to teach children to play with Catholic peg dolls?

Also, you guys SERIOUSLY CHECK THE DOLLAR TREE for religious basket stuffers! Chocolate crosses (in milk and white) and also mint tins with golden crosses filled with fish shaped mints- they're so cute and cost only $1! I also just went to Michael's and got a molding tray (for $1.99) to make my own chocolate crosses and bibles. Michael's also had some "color your own cross" craft sets with 3 crosses in each pack for $1, and it comes with markers! You could also print some of your own holy cards and coloring pages for their baskets. Think creatively- I could never spend $100 to stuff Easter baskets, but that doesn't mean you have to get stuck with secular stuff.

Ellie, I like your peg saints better than the link! Are you willing to make some and sell?

Lacy-
My kids play with their peg saints all the time... the saints have all kinds of adventures, some of which might not be historically correct
And Zac the Rat from Starfall recently made his FHC at my house....

I let them play because what I am after is having them be surrounded by and familiar with our Catholic culture. They will grow up and fondly remember Zac's First Communion. They will remember playing with all the saints (though I did draw the line when Barbie was crucified).

Maybe you could paint a set representing your family and then show the kids how all the priests and nuns could help with baptisms, etc?

The last time I looked they didn't. However, I do believe that joann's had a few of the different size pegs that are often used for the painted families. Or look at etsy and compare prices vs other online palaces.

All three of those stores have wooden peg people here- but not all the same kind. I guess it varies from store to store.
I'll check our craft stores for the peg dolls the next time we go. With those 40% and 50% off coupons they have each week I am sure they can be pretty inexpensive. My mother also enjoys painting so I think between the two of us we could make some lovely saint pegs for the children's Easter baskets.

One of our friends found these beautiful religious stickers at the dollar store last year including some of the stations of the cross!

Lindsay, I just found several different sets of religious stickers at our local Dollar Tree store...the sets includes Stations of the Cross (surrounding an image of the Resurrection and the "A" word which we biry during Lent), Mysteries of the Rosary (twenty, including the images for the Luminous Mysteries), Images of Christ, Images of the Blessed Mother and one set with various crucifixes, crosses and angels adoring the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance. There are four sheets in each set. There are no titles on the sticker sets, so you may have to look a little carefully to figure out the contents, but most of the images are very traditional and quite lovely for $1.

Oh, and I was just remembering what my mom did for Easter. We got tights or other odds and ends to wear, and some years we got a book or DVD or cd. However, she also saved the little themed filler things and used them year after year. Things like wind up ducks or chicks, bunnies, etc...

I am sure you could do the same with religious items, and really, it is such a long time in between, one forgets those things until you get them again. And some of that sort of thing becomes junk fast, so putting it away again once it is no longer played with makes sense. With this in mind, one might justify the cost of some things if it meant using them year after year.

Also, maybe using some of the themed tea ideas like the religious treats Alice Gunther shares on her blog would be an affordable way to orient one's basket to be a bit more religious.

I considered it but I'm not willing to charge enough to make it worth my time. Before I even looked at the going rates on etsy I was thinking no more than $5 each. I think they need to be affordable.

However, I do have some extra pegs around if you'd like a few specific ones, I might be able to work something out. Feel free to pm me.

I do however caution that I may decline any commissions for two reasons:

1- I'm a pregnant, homeschooling, household manager with limited free time.

2- They're so easy! I feel guilty charging money for such simple, enjoyable work.

Oh,my you ladies are so organized! I was pleased I printed off my Lenten calendar from Lacy's site before the morning of Ash Wednesday.

I placed a big order from St.Luke's Brush to fill our Easter baskets. I think every Mom spends what she wants on certain items and others she has to enjoy window shopping and choose something else. I know I have done that plenty of time on this forum from Vera Bradley diaper bags, Hanna Anderson dresses and crayons which cost $20 per order (beeswax). Gulp!!

I'm hoping nobody from these etsy shops comes on here and reads how their work has been diminished and their talents maligned. I'm sad tonight reading this thread!

I hope I made it clear how lovely I think the peg creations sold on Etsy are! I don't think anyone here was questioning the talent of the sellers. But I think it's okay to say that if you don't have that kind of money to spend, you're willing to put in some time of your own, and you're okay with the results not being "perfect," you can make some of these yourself for a lot less than it takes to buy them. I appreciate the encouragement here to try a hand at painting some of my own because there is no way I could afford them! (Or Vera Bradley or beeswax crayons, for that matter! )

I bet that all the talented artists at etsy are pretty thick-skinned and will see this topic as a great compliment! They are worth imitation and offer inspiration! Plus, there are moms like me who WILL pay them for their time and effort because they are worth every penny and because I'm seriously craft-impaired and truly am not up to the beautiful task at hand.

Ellie, your pics are absolutely adorable!

Love,

All people who sell their wares online are aware of the copycat artists out there. This is the risk of marketing your crafts. The problem is when one tries to copy a copyrighted item and then sell it for profit.

Painting little figures is hardly a copyrighted venture.

Also, I hope no one has mistaken or compared me to any of the online sellers. St. Luke's Brush does great, detailed work. Mine are clearly much more simple, and much more suited for the sometimes rough play they endure in this household.

There's a place for each I think.

I'm a big do-it-yourselfer, and I personally get a lot more satisfaction out of doing something myself than purchasing something. Painted peg dolls have been around for a long time. Plus, I can think of 3 different companies that sell Catholic peg dolls right off the top of my head- I'm sure there are more. I actually see blog posts where people have painted their own Catholic peg dolls all the time.

Even the great masters "copied" each other. I mean, look at how impressionism popped up in the same group of artists. Art couldn't exist in its current state without the inspiration of one artist to another, each building from the previous one. If we were all artistically starting at square one, we'd still be making cave paintings.

Dear Ladies,
It has been a while since I was on here. Trying to cover too many bases and not able to.

I was intrieged by this thread becasue in Australia we do not seem to have as may options for CHEAP anything. I Looked at Lacy's post just this morning and I have been to our own $2 shops lately and we have nothing like these lovely items

Even our local peg dolls cost me so much more, around $2.50 (if I buy over 20 at a time) at least to buy.
Of course buying form your US shops involves shipping too as an added cost.

I have tried over the years to make things for our Easter baskets because that is the only way we can afford them.

Having said that our children really LOVE, LOVE LOVE getting chocolate eggs for Easter. We rarely have goodies like this except for birthdays and Easter and so these are very special too.

SO I have an Easter bag which we putchocolate eggs and choc bunnies in. WE then have a home made basket I re use each year and then I make small items for these. Felted egss, bunnies, an alleluia in a opening egg etc
I am at the moment making little bunnies ( I know not religious but still sginificant when presented in the right way) and we always have butterfly's that I have made.
These are not huge but our children treasure them, partly I think because it is a tradition and partly because I have made them.

So I beleive that to allow our children some of the Easter treats I need to make them, due to the cost as so many of you have said.
You know even $10 per person is $130 and you do not get a lot for $10 each.

I have enjoyed looking at some of your ideas and will see how I can improvise to help our own Easter celebrations
Blessings
