I just received the Garnet Hill catalog in the mail. The skirts are adorable but WAY out of my price range. So I am wondering if I should dust off the old sewing machine and give them a try.
summer skirt
and
tiered skirt
What do you think?

I can't sew. But I got a skirt that looks just like that tiered skirt at Target last fall for under $20.

Mary Chris, have you checked out thisnew email loop? THere's been lots of discussion of skirts.
I just received a JoAnn's flier with some really cute skirts that are made from fabric panels. Also, I've seen some tiered fabric with elastic in it already so that you just buy however much you need and sew the sides together.

I'm not much of a seamstress, but I do sew when I find it utterly necessary. Most of my recent sewing involves costumes, but I have made skirts before. They are definitely easier to make than tops, as long as you have a good pattern and don't need a zipper! (I avoid zippers.) I'm with Elizabeth, though... I'd try to find something cheaper at Target or maybe even Stein Mart/Ross/some place like that maybe? JC Penney on sale?

REbecca,
If you click on Fireside Chat, there's a link to the photo gallery there. Or, try this clickable link to the Photo Gallery. Be sure to click on the thumbnails so you can see the whole picture.

Thank you for pointing that out again, Elizabeth. I knew it was here somewhere as I had seen it but couldn't remember where in the forum it was since it isn't in the main headers.

Michelle,
Thank you for taking the time to point me in the direction with all those great links. Those skirts are really cute!
I am just scared of zippers .
My mom is coming in May and she is an Incredible seamstress! Of course I am not sure that she wants to spend her visit here reteaching me how to sew. G Street Fabrics is also close by, maybe it is time for another sewing class .

Mary Chris,
Invisible zippers! One you try then you'll never go back to regualr. Really, I just posted on this in the "sewing room". Zippers are always a cause for a moment of pause but the invisible ones are much easier to do.

OK,
a) Most people who sew love to help others become as addicted to uh... excuse me interested in it as they are.
b) You have G Street?! Girlfriend, is there really any question??

Uhh, well... in all honesty, I must say that much of what you see in the picture wasn't made by me! Tim's habit is borrowed, though I made the hat. My dress is borrowed too, and Tim's mom made Zachary's cloak. But I did make most of "LegoNicholas'" costume, as well as most of Noah-mir's and Samuel's (little Frodo). The key is that I find that type of thing relaxing -- IF I have the time. If you don't enjoy sewing and crafting, then the whole process is extremely painful!

It IS cool! Well done Janette!
We had a Lord of the Rings party a few years ago for dd's birthday (her request). Imagine 50 homeschoolers all dressed up as LOTR characters. It was A LOT of fun. I made costumes for most of my bunch. Dh was Gandalf, I was Galadriel, and kids were a varity of elves and hobbits (oh oldest ds was "Strider"). I'll have to see if I can dig out some pictures - they aren't digital so I'd have to scan them .

Michele,
I would love to see the pictures if you can scan them! We had many of the other children dressed as elves, men and hobbits too. It was so much fun!
