I saw this post and couldn't resist. My favorite is the mocha with extra whip cream!

You guys have been great!

Here is my amateur question...what is a latte exactly if it can be a tea too?

I'm really not up on the terms that define what type of drink you'll get, kwim

Im not really sure what a latte is?   I always thought it was mostly milk with a little coffee, but I'm probably wrong. I stick with the mocha, its kind of like an adult cocoa. I add shots which gives it more of a dark chocolate taste and not a sweet.

The Strawberries & Cream frappucino is really yummy. I love the Tazo Wild Sweet Orange tea, too, but make that at home instead of buying it from them.

A coffee latte is made with lots of milk and espresso. (I grew up on them before they were "in" -- Cuban cafe con leche.) I think a chai latte is the same thing with tea instead of coffee. (I googled and it said you'd put the tea through an espresso machine to make one at home?) I've never had a chai latte...

My understanding is that a cappuccino is 1:1 espresso and steamed milk and a latte is 1:2. I'm not sure if that is how Starbucks makes their or not, but that is how I make them at home.

I think a mocha is just a latte with chocolate added, I use syrup, but there might be some way to do it with cocoa in a professional espresso machine?

I think you would need very strong tea to make a tea latte, but I'm guessing it is the same thing.

Regular chai tea is actually pretty easy to make at home. This is the recipe I use :

Quote:
Put 4 c. water to boil with 2 cinnamon sticks, broken and 1 tsp. of cloves. Turn it down and simmer for 10 minutes. Add 1 c. milk, 8 black tea bags (we use Trader Joe's decaf Irish Breakfast), and 1/2 (we actually use about 1/3) c. sugar. Let it steep for 3 minutes, strain, and enjoy!

I'm with Lindsay in that Carmel Macchiatto is my favorite! However, I haven't had one in forever... I don't live anywhere near a Starbucks now , but when I do get to one I've been getting a Skinny Vanilla Latte (may have to start adding an extra shot of espresso to that, though ).

I live in the birthplace of Starbucks and I am not a fan. Many of us Washingtonians are not (we tend to be coffee snobs).

I think their coffee is burnt and bitter and they load in the syrup in wierd proportions.

I'd much rather frequent a little roadside stand instead (which are on every other corner here)... or make myself a "poor man's mocha" (dump a bag of Hot Cocoa mix into homemade coffee)

OK, I know this is going to make me sound INSANE, but I have never been to Starbucks!!!! I know people swear by it, but I went off of caffeine when I got preggo the first time. We finally got a Starbucks in our smaller town a few years ago and I haven't even gone yet. I guess it is my way of sticking it to the man...

I've only been once, on the Ohio Turnpike. I got iced tea, which was very good, but also very small and super $$$$!

Please...no rotton tomatoes, but I'm a Tim Horton's girl. If I ever did go to *$, I'd probably have to order a plain old coffee. I don't think I'd know what to order....unlike Tom Hanks in "You've Got Mail." I'd need to print out your responses.

Well until actually last September I had never even tried coffee. Then I only went to Starbucks when a couple of my CCD kids got me gift cards to there. now I'm spoiled!

Okay so I think I understand latte and mocha. I'll admit more stupidity here...what is espresso? Like how does that compare to the DD coffee I make in my coffeemaker at home? I add coffee mate creamer and a bit of sugar. (I think I might try a squirt of chocolate syrup ).

And what is macchiato? Did I even spell that right? I think someone should publish a coffee house primer, if there isn't one yet

I'd rather Dunkin Donuts, and then Tim Hortons, but around here we have Starbucks. And Joe Muggs in the bookstore. Oh, and Peets at the supermarket...that is really good but inconvienient unless I'm shopping.

Caramel ma...???.. (can't spell this late at night ;) ) is basicly a latte (espresso and steamed milk w/o a lot of foam) with vanilla syrup and caramel drizzled over the top. Although my fav non-chain place makes it more authenticly and does the steamed milk, foam, and espresso just right in the middle, not mixed, with a drizzle of caramel. Way less sweet.

espresso is a very dark roast and very concentrated coffee.

so latte is like cafe au lait? (the the cafe au lait I've had is very weak in coffee and has a pinch of nutmeg)

And Janette.. what is a Strawberries & Cream frappucino?

is that only steamed milk with syrup for flavoring? so that you could pick your flavoring?

Autumn I usually get a Pumpkin Spice Latte.
Winter I usually get a Gingerbread or Peppermint Latte.

Rest of the year, my most common brew if a Chocolate-Caramel Macchiato w/ whipped cream.

Oh, forgot to mention, with all this espresso, latte, talk....
I usually also get, with my soy hot chocolate, FREE coffee grinds for my garden compost. THAT is what really gets me in there!
They usually have a basket with foil bags and you can just pick one up and go....

Thanks for that recipe, Lindsay! My college-aged dd LOVEs chai tea and I hate to have to run to the local coffee cafe to get it for her (especially on cold winter days!) when she is home visiting, but it is nice to have a special treat for her. I can make this easily at home and it looks great!

Oh, and I'm the most uninspired one here. I always order a plain, tall latte, no flavoring...I'm on a perpetual diet, but to no avail!
