Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I love that this storm is arriving for Candlemas Day! We just stocked up on candles this past weekend (we hoped to have them blessed at Mass, but it looks like we won't be making the hourlong drive in a blizzard!).

Several years ago while searching for info about traditions of candlemas I found and blogged about the Polish tradition associated with storms.

Quote:
In searching for Candlemas images I found that in Poland this feast is called Blessed Mother of the Candles or ”Matka Boska Gromniczna,” in Polish. In this polish tradition candles are decorated with ribbons or liturgical symbols and are brought to the church to be blessed by the priest. The blessed candles (called gromnice) are then brought home and are burned before a portrait of the Blessed Mother, until sunrise the following day.

I discovered an image from a holy card which represents her with this title. The candles are called Thunder Candles. In Poland, as well as in some other nations, these blessed candles have a special meaning because, after they have been brought home, they are lit in times of danger, during storms and disasters, as a sign of entrusting oneself, one’s family and all one possesses to God’s protection. It is also lit in times of trouble or when someone is approaching death. The legend surrounding the candles is that in the evening the Blessed Mother wards off wolves by using the candles as a torch. This image reflects that connection.

What a lovely custom, Mary!

We just have rain and fog here on the coast, but praying for all of you in the path of this storm. Maggie, I will be especially praying for your husband and for you, too. I know it's hard to have your husband gone during a storm; I'm sure you worry about him when the weather conditions are so bad. I will entrust him and all of the emergency workers to Our Lady. She will watch over them faithfully!

Mary M, thank you for sharing that lovely image and quote....I searched a little and found home blessings for Candlemas...with your lovely image, we'll still be able to celebrate the feastday.

Praying for all those who work on fire or rescue crews, as well as those who have to be out in this stormy weather, working so hard to restore power and phone service we sometimes take for granted! May God keep them ALL safe!

Neat, Mary!

We're only getting rain...and not much of it.

I'll be praying for all of you.

Well we got dumped on...and daddy is still at the hospital. Pulled an over nighter and may be there for a second night! Whew.

I loved the image of Mary with the wolves. The wind sounded very much like wolves last night...we even had thundersnow!

Keep praying for all the people that are under drifts of snow. I finally got the kids out there after we finished our schooling! (on a snow day!)

We are right in the center of IL.

We got 17.5 inches...main roads have been cleared but all residential roads are still buried. University of Missouri has closed campus again tomorrow..3days in a row..crazy. Everything is shut down and I'm thankful that we are all safe and warm. I've been thinking about all the homeless people in our town, praying they found shelter somewhere.
