Welcome, Angelina! I love your name. It was my grandma's name and our planned name for our last baby until he was born and was a boy! Welcome to this forum. It is a wonderful place, especially for newbies (and I am one of those). Congrats on making the decision to homeschool. You are going to have a wonderful journey!
BTW, I am doing K now with my DS5 so let me know if you have any questions about K!

My name is Jackie. I have four children: 17, 5, 3, and 1. We are expecting a fifth child in November. My oldest daughter will be graduating from a Catholic high school next year, but we have prayerfully decided on homeschooling for the youngest four.
I am currently trying to decide on a curriculum for this fall for Kindergarten. I received three workbooks from Our Lady of Victory in the mail yesterday, because this is the curriculum toward which we are leaning. I was thinking about getting some of the Seton pre-K materials for my soon to be 4-year-old. That way we would be doing Seton for pre-K and OLVS for kindergarten, but it would give us a chance to try out the two curricula and see which one works for us.
I am a certified secondary math and science teacher, and I now teach part-time online from home. So I feel like eventually I will be comfortable desigining my own plans, but I think I will start out with the pre-made lesson plans until I get more comfortable with the whole thing.
I have read some of the thread here on curriculum and hope to get some more input. My greatest challenge will be creating a structure and sticking to it, as we are usually pretty casual in our daily routine up until now.

Hello All,
My name is Shannon and my husband and I have 3 children, ages 8, 5, and 1. I was homeschooled through the high school years after continuing problems with the Catholic School that I was attending. We were blessed with a classmate of mine who had 8 siblings that were homeschooled. She was attending school for the year. I convinced my mother to meet with her mother, who graciously imparted all of the knowledge that she had acquired in schooling her own children. A year or so later, my mother took a leap of faith and pulled me from school in the middle of 8th grade, with my brothers to follow at the end of the year.
It has been quite a journey, and although I am a second generation homeschooler I have found that I still have so much to learn! I have found over the years how little I know about our Catholic faith and I am hoping to learn and grow with the great knowledge and support that I have seen on this forum.

After being away for quite a while, I would like to reintroduce myself. My name is Yvette and my husband, Patrick, and I live in Lancaster County, PA. We have 6 children, the oldest is 19 and studying at Christendom College. The youngest is 2. We are eclectic in our approach to home education with a strong inclination to CM and classical studies. In high school we have relied on MODG with the oldest having earned his diploma through them and the 16 yo currently enrolled as a junior. I am looking forward to seeing familiar faces and to getting back to the type of learning we enjoyed when my oldest were younger. We have had a rough year, and I am spent, but I am looking forward to reenergizing while my children continue to grow and learn with a more joful mama :-)
God blesss,
Yvette

My daughter is looking at Christendom as a poosibility for 2012. How do you and your child like it? There are so few majors, I am not sure if it is a viable option for her. She is interested in medicine, so she may have to look elsewhere.

Hey there! I am a homeschooling wife and mother of five - 3 girls & 2 boys ages 19 - 4. We began homeschooling when my oldest was in kindergarten and bored to tears. I love it (probably more than my kids do (-; ) and continue to find more reasons to do it every year.
One of our sons (Christopher, age 8) is special needs due to a heart attack and stroke 36 hours after birth due to an undiscovered genetic metabolic disease called VLCAD. Shortly put, people who have this disease cannot utilize stored energy, and if they have not eaten in X amount of hours, their bodies begin to pull energy from their muscles, the heart being the biggest one. Christopher nursed very poorly, so he essentially went into starvation mode, hence the heart attack then stroke. It happened at home in my arms! but, THANK GOD, his daddy is an anesthesiologist and knew CPR. After the ambulance too us to the hospital, it happened again, this time Christopher being down for approximately 20 minutes, making him anoxic, which led to his damaged little brain. They actually pronounced him dead, BUT! two minutes later he began twitching. Talk about witnessing a miracle!!!! After he spent two weeks in the RIC-NIC, enduring every test you can think of to determine why this happened, the results of his newborn screening finally came back w/the diagnosis of the rare VLCAD. They actually wouldn't have known about it had it not been for us agreeing to the optional newborn tests, metabolic diseases being one of them (I think that part of the test is mandated now, at least in some states). We got the diagnosis two hours before we were to take him home! Actually, after he went from the ER to the RIC-NIC, the doctors urged us to sign DNR papers. You can imagine how we reacted to THAT!! My mom had called our priest, and he baptized Christopher immediately. So when we got the diagnosis, we still wanted to take him home since there was nothing more they could do for him. We were put in touch w/the genetic doctor at the hospital (which was Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center - CCHMC- a truly terrific hospital) who advised us to enroll in a study in Dallas, TX, that was working on a special oil that would help people who have this disease. While this was being arranged, my whole little family was advised to be tested for the disease since it is genetic. Lo and behold, our third daughter, Abby, turned up w/it )-: . Boy, it was just one blow after another those days! She apparently never showed signs of it except for occasional muscle weakness we had chalked-up to laziness. She always was an ardent nurser, so she kept herself safe. The ironic thing is that breast milk was (they've changed their stance since then, which was in 2002) considered bad for VLCAD children since it is so high in fat, which is bad since they can't convert it into energy. So I was told to stop nursing Christopher and Abby (who was 3 at the time and still nursing). I felt like my world was falling apart! I really don't know what I would have done without God, that's for sure! Anyway, both children were put into the study at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, and our entire family went their for a week while all of the work-up work was done. Since then, both children have grown by leaps and bounds and are doing so well that you'd never guess they have the diesease. Christopher functions at approximately a 3-year-old's capacity, but who cares? Anything that child does is a bonus since we didn't think he'd ever breathe or walk on his own!
I certainly apologize for this incredibly long post, but I like to share this story w/people who I know will appreciate it and see it for what it is - a real and true miracle from God Himself. When we first talked about the Resurrection w/our girls when they were little and would say that Jesus rose from the dead but that only happened to Him, at least one of our little ones would pipe-up that that isn't true b/c it happened to little Christopher. Try arguing THAT one w/a 3-year-old (-; !
We live in Cincinnati, OH, and belong to St. Ignatius Church. My oldest girl attends Xavier University here in Cincy, and my next girl is at sophomore at McAuley High School. I would love to continue to homeschool my children through high school, but the those two really wanted to go to high school. My third daughter, Abby, says she wants to homeschool through high school, but we'll see how she feels next year (-: (she'll be in 7th grade this year).
Thank you for reading my ramblings, and if anyone has any questions regarding our experiences w/VLCAD, please don't hesitate to contact me.
