Has anyone ever used the Faith and Freedom readers series that Seton produces?
It looks very similar to a "Dick and Jane" type book--just sweet and perfect for the beginning reader. I am looking for good "Dick and Jane" type books...just a touch more challenging though.
Any thoughts on this series or others?

We have always used these and love them.
Large families, CAtholic lifestyle, and delightful little
Stories. All of my children and Godchildren have loved them.
We love, love, love readers.

All of my children, boys and girls, have liked these readers. This is the only reader type book I can even get them to read. Love them!

We also have this series. We purchased them from Seton when they became available. Great reading for everyone.

I just started these with my 1st grader this year and he loves them. My 4th grade son was always looking over his brother's shoulder so I borrowed a few from the 3rd/4th grade level for him to try. He really likes them too!

Maggie, they are wonderful readers. They are reprints from the 50s and 60s illustrating Catholic family life.
We didn't use them strictly as a reader growing up, but I always enjoyed sitting down and reading the stories (I always read through my readers!).

If my dd has completed 100 EZ lessons, which reader do you think would be most appropriate for her to start with?
Seems unanimous that everyone likes them! I knew they looked good!

I have been wanting this readers as well. My sister gave me a reader from A Beka (Secrets and Surprises) and my daughter loves it. I wonder if F&F readers are similar to the A Beka books?

I've used them for six children now and love them. However I was thinking about this the other day, I wouldn't call them strictly phonetic readers. Lots of basic words and really great. But for the last few children I've found it easier to use a very basic phonics set before beginning F & F.

Love them here, too! After DS finished 100 EZ Lessons, he started reading the 1st grade level. The Pre-Primer is really easy. "Ann. See Ann." etc. He didn't mind and it was a welcome relief from the stories at the end of 100 EZ lessons! He pretty much flew through the 3 first grade readers, but enjoyed them.

I fell in love with these when I recognized some of the stories from my catholic elementary school days which was a loooong time ago! My son has really enjoyed these readers too.

This is one set of books we weren't able to browse through or use or at least see! We've looked at or used every other one out there though.
SIGH. We missed out. I need to adopt a child so I can have an excuse to use these ones

So, my SILs were both recommending these readers over Thanksgiving, but it slipped my mind until I saw this thread. This week, I finally got around to ordering them for my first grader, and I was SO excited to see the package today!
Then, I opened it and found three SECOND grade readers. 
I was so worried it was me, but no, the invoice says "First Grade" the the books I thought I was ordering are clearly on the "First Grade" curriculum.
So, I left a message at customer service (I'm sure they don't field inquiries on weekends) to see what is to be done.
Its just so disappointing to be waiting for something, be excited the wait is over, and then realize you are just waiting again.

We love the readers also. One thing, the first reader is meant to introduce sight words. Seton suggests you start it towards the end of first grade, but then quickly progress through the other readers that combine both sight words and phonetic words that have been learned through their phonics program. After using Little Angels Readers, and the Little Folks from CHC, I like these readers the best. At least for our family, they make the most sense.

So, after being sent the THIRD grade readers and having the customer service rep express his extreme embarrassment over a second mistake in shipping, lol, we *finally* got the first grade readers this morning.
Ds really loves them and doesn't want to stop reading!

After checking out the link above for the readers I discovered that I had the same books, although in hard cover, when I was in Catholic grade school.
I loved these books!

I have used both these readers at various times. We started years ago with ABeka, but I quickly lost interest in their readers. The earlier grades had stories that were all by the same author (or maybe by the editiors?) and the art work was too cartoony for my taste.
In recent years we have used F & F. We are using them now, in fact! I really like these aspects:
1). They are unabashedly Catholic. Really, I think if you are not Catholic you will not be happy with these.
2). They contain stories and excerpts from stories by noted children's authors ...not by some unknown person or committee. The selections are varied and interesting...even I enjoy the stories.
3). The artwork is realistic with a fifties flair.
