I am wearing: Lands End Jeans, purple scoop neck long sleeve T, and a LONG, soft cable-knit sweater.
I am drinking: Coffee. As usual.
Outside my window: A winter wonderland of snow--and lots of it.
Fav thread:I'm devouring anything CM related lately.
A retreat visitor I'd like to see: I concur ==> Meredith!
I should be: Well, unpacking I suppose.
I'm hoping: That my 2 college kids make it in okay. They are flying in tomorrow and sunday.

Me me! I love it sooooooooooo much that I can't allow it to brought out until Christmas Eve!
I look for the best brand - usually a local dairy - and then the key is to add freshly ground nutmeg to the top...oh, and spike it, if you like.
Love,

That used to be my favorite when I was younger too. My brother and I used to bake them with my grandma--he and I were responsible for rolling the balls, and half of it probably ended up in our mouths! Oh, and my mom's frosted-and-sprinkled sugar cookies. We made dozens and dozens of those every year. Now I would probably say gingersnaps or peppermint bark.

Hey, Carole, I just linked to "That's the Spirit"
I may try this one from allrecipes.com because of the rave reviews. For as much as I love egg nog, I've never made it from scratch.
Love,

It's not Christmas here without sugar cookies that the kids paint with food coloring/egg wash. And lots of sprinkles, of course.

Great idea, Jen!
I am wearing...lots of layers. We keep the house heater in the 50s, so it is COLD here!
I am drinking...hot coffee. It's an Ember Day today, so we're fasting...and so I'm sipping beverages all day long.
Outside my window...cold and rain. It's supposed to rain here (I'm in Northern California) from today until Christmas. Not looking forward to running and doing errands tomorrow morning in the wintery weather! I do enjoy being indoors when it's raining, though. Very cozy. I'm looking forward to cooking up tonight's pizza in a couple hours--that hot oven will heat up the whole downstairs.
A favorite thread...The Christmas breakfast post is one of my current favorites. So much to drool over there!
A retreat visitor I wish would drop in is...some lurkers!
If I weren't on this "retreat" I should be...getting dinner prepped and the kitchen cleaned up. In a few minutes!
I am hoping...to finish up the kids' aprons tonight--the last of the sewn Christmas gifts. Whew!

My Granny used to always make Divinity for Christmas treats. It's not really a cookie..and I have to tell you that every time I attempt it...it's more like Purgatory than Divinity ( ), but it's my favorite Christmas treat. We'll be attempting it next week!
Recipe here

Hooray! I notice it is GLUTEN FREE!
I don't have any corn syrup, so I guess I'll have to wait a few days to make them. No telling when I'll be able to get to the store next.

Oh...that's good to know..check local dairies!

I just made Butter Toffee Squares -- the coffee pot is brewing and my kids just finished their last work before the break My son is on his way home -- early discharge from last day of high school. Tomorrow my daughter comes home from college and we'll all be together again!
It's pouring rain here in the Sierra Nevadas of central California -- a beautiful day to be inside with a warm fire in the wood stove!

No one here is an eggnog drinker, but Jen's cinnamon spice tea sounds very appealing. I'll admit that right now I'm eating chocolate. Earlier I went to RiteAid to get a new blow dryer. Mine just quit on me! Anyway, at the tempting candy display at the checkout I saw - and of course bought, and just ate - a Necco SkyBar. Its a four-segmented chocolate bar with a different filling in each section. Caramel, vanilla, peanut, and fudge. Not very high quality chocolate, but if you concentrate on the fillings, you're not too sad eating it!
This is a candy bar that I'd started thinking I"d just imagined. I kept thinking there had been something of this description in my childhood, but couldn't find anything. So, let's just say I ate it for old time's sake.
You know, another favorite childhood candy that I've not seen for years is a full-sized Sugar Daddy covered in chocolate. I think it might be called a Black Cow?
Oh, and I also learned today at RiteAid that LifeSavers no longer makes the rolls of candy. I'm thinking you can get the actual candy, but packaged differently. But those LifeSaver rolls were so handy to keep in a purse! I am outraged! Not really. I just wonder where these companies get these brilliant ideas.
Oh, the good old days...
Peace,
Nancy

Yes, and I bet mine will look much worse. I'm sitting here wondering what effect 7500ft of altitude will have on them.

I am wearing...pink fuzzy robe, ( I am NOT kidding), over my gray sweats and rugby shirt. I am sick..and am all about comfort and warmth today.
I am drinking...hot decaf coffee..love it.
Outside my window...partly sunny, very cold, snow on the ground....I'm sure it will be until April
A retreat visitor I wish would stop in....our dear, dear friend, Nina Murphy....I miss her!! Of course, I would love to see dear Marilyn as well!!
If I weren't on this retreat I should be....well, if I wasn't sick I wouldn't be sitting here as much, but I should be folding laundry and making dinner.
I am hoping...to get over this awful sinus infection now, like, RIGHT now...and need to finish wrapping gifts...and am hoping my anxiety post Lily's trach removal will settle down. My usual inside litany of "what if's" have been trying to take over, I am fighting it, and for TODAY, she is fine.

Ooooohhhhh, that's right - high altitude cooking for you now. I forget how much higher Santa Fe is even than here in the Mile High City. Good luck!

I think I can honestly say I have never made it from scratch either! But all I can find here is the canned stuff from the American grocer. So I thought I should look for a good recipe. The link looks very tempting.

My wonderful dh just came home from work early to surprise ds and I with a trip to the movies to see Dawn Treader... so I'll be reading the rest of this after-the-fact. Enjoy your tea and cookies, gals!

My dh absolutely loved the Dawn Treader...he had tears in his eyes as he went through the story..said it was a terrific movie. Can't wait to see this with the other half of kids who were sick when he took the others.

Thanks! Our house is actually in the hills outside Santa Fe. A little place called Glorieta, which is even higher than Santa Fe.
And of course our house in on the very tippy top of a mesa:
Can you see it up there?
We are talking *altitude* people!LOL!
