Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ladies, just dropping back in for a minute, but I had to thank Jennifer for those wonderful goodies. The O Antiphon pdf is just beautiful; thank you so much for putting that together for everyone.

One thing I find disappointing in the current Liturgy of the Hours is that the O Antiphons have been "updated" and aren't all in the more traditional format. Something about the use of "O" at the beginning communicates a sense of wonder and awe. I think that current version is an unfortunate revision. I wonder if along with the new translation of the Mass, a new edition of the Divine Office will be forthcoming?

NO KIDDING!! it's like asking for a snack and getting a 5-course meal! WOW! I just *knew* I was reinventing the wheel. and the goodie bag made me gasp, too. THANKS SO MUCH!

Mary, the more I hear from you, the more I like you, even aside from pesky P&P issues. too bad there's so many miles between these former Idaho gals.

off to laminate ...

That's a great analogy, Viviane. It is a rich resource.

Yes, maybe one day our trips back home will coincide and we can go out for a baked potato.

On more thing I wanted to add tonight...

In the prayer companion, Jenn mentions:
Quote:
One way is reviving the old custom of monasteries of different monks furnishing extra treats on these days to the members of the community. As Florence Berger describes:

The gardener gave the community some of his finest dried or preserved fruits on Dec 19 when he called on Christ: 'O Root of Jesse, come to deliver us and tarry not.' The cellarer unlocked the best wine for his treat as he called: 'O Key of David, come, and come quickly.' Finally, on Dec 23, the abbot gave his extra gift to the brothers. Expense accounts which are still extant show how generous and extensive a list of foods were used on the abbot's 'O day.'" — Cooking for Christ

So here is my little treat offering for wisdom, incorporating a symbol of wisdom that is near and dear to me. Enjoy the cupcakes.

From Hello, Cupcake!

Just a fix-it note...I realized when reading the Evening Prayer that the Office does use "O" at the beginning of each antiphon...don't know what I was remembering there, but I was glad to see that "O"!

I think I will give "The Christmas Tree" list (that Jenn so graciously gave us ) to the older kids tomorrow and ask them to make their own ornaments for our tree.

I know I am not quite an advent season flunkie but I am waaay behind the 8 ball this year due to the new baby and a totally new normal. I am ok with that and the only one that feels a bit guilty is one of my twins (they are my masters of ceremonies, so to speak)

I always thought I would have them make some kind of ornaments like this to hang from a grapevine swag for the Lenten season made out of shrinky dink plastic. I did something kinda like that a few years ago and it was a hit. I was just trying to spread out the idea of symbolism for yet another liturgical season. I LOVE symbolism. Just ask my kids. Now they look for symbolism everywhere...even the bank parking lot...

Love the idea of the kids making their own ornaments.

Jenn, I *love* the cute purple bag and the contents!

Mary, those owl cupcakes are too cute! And I think the monastery tradition is cool. Maybe next year I can do little treats for the O Antiphons -- marking that second half of Advent. (Maybe someone here will remind me...    )

I love the owl cupcakes! Your treat was so nice, Mary.

Just adding some thoughts here. I mentioned before, but for a quick O Antiphon ornaments, the Jesse Tree ornaments that Michele posted include the O Antiphons, and I love that.

Jessica elaborated some wonderful symbolic foods at Catholic Cuisine.

The prayer companion I shared I put each page in a ring binder horizontal easel similar to this so it's displayed at our dining table.

Most of the artwork I picked doesn't need explanation. I did try to encirle each so it looked like an "O", but not sure that came across. I couldn't find just simple "tablets" so Moses is with the tablets. I thought images of the sun or sunrise would be easy to find, but they weren't.

For December 22, O King, I gave a rendition of the Adoration of the Magi, because they are adoring a King, and the Magi represent the Gentiles or Nations. On Epiphany we enthrone/crown our baby Jesus. I was looking for an image that has Jesus crowned as a baby, but couldn't find one in the short period of time.

Adding one more thing. There is an OOP book that covers the symbols that represent Christ int he Old and New Testaments. Thumbing through today I recognized many of the O Antiphon titles.

Symbols of Christ: Old and New Testament by Damasus Winzen, O.S.B.

There are various editions; mine is 1955 PJ Kenedy.

Old Testament:
Seal of the Living God
Tree of Life
Holy Mountain
Burning Bush
Brazen Serpent
Star of Jacob
Rod of Jesse
Key of David
Cornerstone
Sun of Justice

New Testament:
Lamb of God
Door
Lamp
Fountain of LIfe
True Vine
Grain of Wheat
Bread of Life
Precious Pearl
Fish of the Living
Alpha and Omega
