Kathryn,
My dh is 6'4" and I'm only 5'2", so when I get to the stage you are in, I often wear the same trousers every day and wear his shirts on top.(And I don't go out often ). I just can't bring myself to purchase clothing late in the game.

I'm 5'5" and my dh is 5'7", is borderline underweight and weighs two stone less than me when I'm not pregnant. If he had a big bump in front, he could wear my T shirts .

I bought several April Cornell dresses and skirts on EBay this last pregnancy, and though they aren't maternity, the skirts with elastic fit me until about 16-18 weeks, and the dresses fit all the way through my pregnancy. The skirts are fitting me pretty well post-partum, too! They would be very long for someone who wasn't at least 5'5" (I'm 5'8"), but I'm sure there are some shorter April Cornell styles. I just look for very long things, usually. I show very early, and carry it all in the tummy and bust, btw.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm a week behind you with only my sixth baby and I broke out my maternity clothes two days ago . |

Well, one good thing about losing all that weight last year has turned out to be that I have an "in between" wardrobe now. I pulled out my old jeans from a chubbier time and breathed a huge sigh of relief the other day.
But I can completely identify with the maternity clothes dilemma. I have such old, out of style things. Many of them are from my first or second pregnancy!
J.C. Penney has all their maternity sportswear for 50% off tomorrow between 8am and noon or 1. I wish I could get there but we have a baptism to attend, and dh needs to get the car inspected before that. Oh well.
I am thinking that Target online (I didn't like the options in the store--just not my style) and J.C. Penney online may be the answer for me for reasonably priced maternity clothes this time.

Well, i checked out JCP and they have nothing useful. two racks of cheap and fugly clothes. Sears carried nothing at all. It turns out that my mall has a Motherhood Maternity store now - filled with lots and lots of cute maternity clothes. I got several new tops, a cardigan, and a maternity 'sweat suit' to wear to my kids' teeball games. I am so happy with them - they are stylish instead of being the flowered tents i remember from the last pregnancy.

I went to a nearly new sale run by a childbirth / breastfeeding support charity on Saturday, and now have a pair of navy linen trousers, a long blue and white check skirt, a pair of jeans (that don't fit!), a long sleeved top and a t-shirt - all for under the equivalent of $20. If I can just find a white or navy top to wear with the skirt, I'm set for the next twelve weeks without having to live in one pair of trousers

I second the Motherhood Maternity suggestion. I was there yesterday and there were some nice, not frumpy clothes. I bought a cute cotton, lined dress that was on the sale rack $16.99 .
The dressier dresses were a little too revealing for my taste - lots of halter and spaghetti straps - but they had these cute little shrug sweaters you could wear with them which would cover you nicely.
What was annoying was there were not too many skirts. I bought a cute black one there last month for dh's 40th birthday party but there was nothing spring-like.
Motherhood is also good for hose, tights, undies and bras.

I have I think 9 tops- all long sleeve/3/4 sleeve and modest and one pair of Black Ponte Knit pants. I am 5 7 1/2 and usually a size 10. These are all size M and a few size L. My friend who is 5 3 wore all of this stuff and it worked find. Most of it is about 4 years aold- good used condition. e mail me off forum if you are interested- and I can describe for you.

I had some more thoughts the other day about "finding" maternity clothes. With my last pregnancy I took some pants that hadn't seen daylight for a while to an alterations shop with some ugly old maternity pants. For about $15 she put the panel in the real pants for me.
Also, I'm pretty bad with a sewing machine, but I did need a maternity formal so I sewed as much as I could and paid her to hem it for me. With sleeve hems and serging all the seams for me, it was under $20 for her part.
I also have some maternity clothes I'd be willing to send to a better place at my expense, including a bridesmaid's top and skirt! PM me and I'll figure out what all is there--tops, dresses, capris?... I can't remember what all.

I have a shopping angel! My friend Megan went to Motherhood for me, came home with two huge bags of clothes, and delivered them to my living room! Most of them were purchased on sale. So,now I do have clothes but I'm back in bed today after attempting my first real trip out of the house (except for ER rehydration visits and a couple of visits to a friend in the hospital). Apparently, my capacity to drive any distance is going to be very limited for a while longer.Sigh...such pretty clothes and no where to go!

I really like Old Navy.com for maternity. I just order the same size maternity as my pre-pregnancy size is and they fit like a charm. They wash nicely and most are cotton, comfy, throw-in-the-dryer type of things. Not for anything formal but great for everyday.

I wanted to clarify that I am not expecting another baby at this time but I am simply always on the look out for maternity clothes because I have been pregnant or nursing at all times for the past 10 1/2 years. Just wanted to clear up the confusion!
Love,

Hi Mary,
I never answered your question from way back when, but you've gotten so many good answers! I hope you have had some luck! I'm, hopefully a few days (could be a week or so ) away from this dilemma!
Over the years, I've mostly shopped at Motherhood - very cute, O.K. prices. But, the hand-me-downs that fit well this time around were from Maternity Gap. If you still need a dress, I'd really try Motherhood as they have a big selection. Good luck!

Mary-
I wear the same size you do and have two dressy maternity dresses that I bought to wear to a wedding when I was 32 weeks pregnant with my first (two because between the wedding and the reception my DH managed to spill an entire pitcher of beer on me and so we scooted into the nearest mall so I could buy a new dress and change ).
One is a light green satiny material and the other is dark pink with little embroidered flowers. Both are sleeveless and about knee length (on me - I'm 5'9) and would be very pretty for a first communion with a cardigan over them. AND I'd be happy to loan either one since I've been pregnant two more times since I bought them and they haven't been worn again.
Email me at sfp@thosepetersons.com if you'd like to borrow!
