Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I know several members here do an Advent purge for their household in preparation for Christmas.

This year I am really trying to take this to heart and let go and USE UP many of the things i tend to cling to.   For instance: stickers. They are meant to be used! I used to be so protective of my nice ones, but now I am letting go and letting the kids just use them and have fun with them.

Shoes I only wear once in a while, clothes I don't love enough to wear more than once a year, items given to me by well meaning family that I don't want and tend to clutter up my house... all going!

Good for you!

I gave up all my scrapping supplies to my kids crafts too! If I ever do scrapping again, it will be digital.

I spent November purging. It's a beautiful thing!

I have started on this too. It is amazing how much "stuff" we can accumulate.

I am taking it one closet at a time, one room at a time...

I am purging <gasp!!> recipes, cooking magazines and cookbooks.

There. I've said it. Maybe now it will come true.

We do two massive cleans a year, Advent and Lent. So we purge as we scrub walls. So satisfying.

Good luck Melinda

Stef, that is exactly what I was thinking of purging!

Well, just when I was thinking I didn't need all those magazines that are in storage (among many other things in storage, this thread reminded me of a particular article/recipe group that was in Martha Stewart years ago and is NO WHERE online. I mean, here I was thinking all that stuff was archived and accessible

I know I need to purge, and I even stopped subscribing to magazines a couple of years ago thinking I could just pick up those that particularly interested me but mostly just find inspiration online, paper free. But, by golly, that is frustrating.

Yes, I have hesitated on my MSL because there are a few articles that I haven't found online. I've been going crazy trying to find them....I feel your pain!

I've given this a shot and got rid of all our cooking magazines (except for current issues). I can't get my husband to let go of three years worth of First Thing Magazines, but maybe know that my Cooking Light & Sunsets are gone he'll join me. (although I understand that they are not the same type of magzine and thus don't push to loose them )

I also went around the rooms and filled a box with "twaddle" books that my kids have accumulated from friends and relatives over the years. This was hard not because they like the books but because I know someone gave it to them . I hate getting rid of books so I gave them to my sister who works in an inner city family center.

Next, we are attacking cloths. We really need to minimize our wardrobes per child (they have way too much in their closets). I also want to try toys especially since they get so many at Christmas. This one will be hard, they can't let go of any of them. We've tried before and maybe 1 out 20 gets to go with tears and protests .

Oh, yes- I have Toy Trauma at my house, too, so I feel your pain.
My ds has a hard time parting with anything. This makes purging very hard.

What I have had to do is box up toys he doesn't play with but can't bear to part with and store them in our attic. That way they are still "here" and he has the comfort of knowing that, but they are not "around", causing clutter. Periodically we go through them and see if the time is right to let another little boy play with them. I have found that this is the gentlest way to handle purging with him.

I am on to a cd purge today... I just found several that I can bag up and part with with no regrets

Help!

Like Erin, we purge twice a year - Advent and Lent.

I've been working on the house a little before Advent started this year. This year my focus is to scrutinize how I'm using spaces as part of this detachment cycle. We've been in our house for 8 years now and I find that some things are exactly where they landed when we moved in 8 years ago. Why? They don't make sense there anymore!!!!

DONE:
** I went through the toy closet last week.
** I went through my cookbooks last week, too. Some are in a stack for me to consider, copy down recipes, and part with! So many of us trying to purge in that area.
** After mid-year review of lesson plans, we rearranged the learning room to accommodate requests in there. It's a fresh look and the kids are enjoying it.
** Kid's rooms - whew!!!
** Kitchen - double whew!

ON MY LIST TO HIT HARD THIS ADVENT:
** Learning room storage closet.
** Pantry...again.
** My closet!!!!
** Montessori/school manipulatives and tools closet!!!!!
** Attic above the garage!!!!!!!!
** Garage.

It feels so satisfying to sit down and enjoy thoughtful spaces for Christmas though!!! I'm working hard to get to that place!

Can't help. I have moved mountains to accommodate my collection of old Victoria magazines (some of which go back to '88). There are times I need something light, inspiring...an old friend to read. This Advent is one of those times for me. I'm grateful to have them!

I have long wished I had a nice collection of old Martha Stewart magazines. She does have a wonderful website...but as Lindsay was saying on another thread it just isn't the same. My only problem is my compulsive need to catalog. I want a list of topics on something easily searchable!!!!

Rolling under bed storage bins with lids work nicely to contain large magazine collections so that they're out of the way but still accessible. I'm just sayin'.

Magazines can be listed on trading sites like BookMooch... that might be an incentive to part with them: you can trade them for books you need and will use.

OK, I'm in. I'm going to need to get rid of quite a bit of stuff to make room for (shhhhh, don't tell my dh) his Christmas gift, the Man Cave. I'll be back for encouragement .

Love,

Ladies, it is so heartening to read this thread. I HONESTLY THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE (re the mags, etc.). And I really really have been beating myself up about this one. It gives me hope and newfound courage.   Thank you!

I have been doing some purging, and I made my trip to the Salvation Army today for one big drop-off.

I just can't wait to do it again.

Our school year ends here on December 17th. Often I finish a week early to start cleaning, I was sharing with dh this morning how I really can't justify that this year as my teens took three weeks off mid term with dh home mid jobs. Dh strongly agreed with me, so looks like we'll be cramming all cleaning and purging into the week before Christmas.
