Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The pastor noticed our family at Mass (we were noticed everywhere we went ), and he gave our hosts a stack of holy cards to give to our kids. The hosts were very kind as well and welcomed all of us back to their own home after Mass for coffee and juice.

I thought of all of you often during that week. We felt presence of Pope John Paul everywhere---he is such a beloved hero to them.

How incredibly beautiful, Diane. I traveled to Poland before having children and felt the same way about that lovely country. What an inspiring trip for your dear children!

<<I will always remember how moving and hopeful it was to attend a High Mass where 6-10 HIGH SCHOOL boys, all utterly reverent and impeccably dressed, served at the altar. I witnessed this at four different parishes. Personally, I have not experienced this in any other diocese in the US (haven't been to Lincoln though) and definitely not in Europe. It's a huge loss.>>

I have the wonderful blessing to be living in the Lincoln Diocese (in Lincoln, no less)    We are truly blessed here with our Bishop. I will say that not all boys (and only boys in this diocese) are impeccably dressed when serving. It just depends on the parish. However, this past year our associate pastor made it a point to insist on nice clothes, black shoes, no shorts, etc. when serving. It was a welcome change!

We were in another diocese a few weeks ago and my 12 year daughter was shocked that there were girl altar servers.    She had no idea girls served at the altar.

Hi, I am chiming in on this late…but in my old parish where only boys served, the priest once confided to me that if he was forced to allow girls to serve he would make them wear veils and garments similar to traditional nuns.

I though that that was an interesting approach!

Karen, I am new to the board, but understand your frustration. Being new to the board, I am not familiar with each member's family size and other information. I think you mentioned this parish is closer to your home, right? Are you able to get to daily Mass, or to Mass a certain number of times during the "work week"? If so, maybe your son could see about serving at daily Mass.

I, myself, wish we could do that at our daily Mass parish; but, the lector of the day also serves part of the Mass, and the Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist (for the Precious Blood) serves the rest of the Mass (regardless of gender for both serving roles).

I'd like to do that and we do plan to start going to daily mass more often, but until ds gets trained, he's not allowed to serve at all, and we're back to the original problem; the guy in charge doesn't seem to be on the ball for getting things in motion. I guess I will email him one last time and if he doesn't have plans to get the kids trained soon, I'll speak to Father. In my original request I did mention that we homeschool and so ds would be available for daily masses and even funerals, etc. that I'm sure they have difficulty getting servers for.

Just wanted to post an update here. I finally resolved this morning that I would speak to Father after Mass and just ask (nicely) if there was something going on with the person in charge of the servers and what we needed to do to get things going.

So, before I can get the words out, Father leans over and asks me when I'm due! Uh, I'm not pregnant
Then he tries to backpedal and says it's the dress (as I'm mentally making plans for the Goodwill box!) I do carry some extra weight (OK a lot) up front since my last baby, and the dress's waistline is a little high for me anyway. I was so flustered (as was Father) that I completely forgot about the altar server thing.

Just as well, b/c another man called tonight and spoke to ds about it, said he's taking over the training now and he set up a time. So maybe the original guy did have something going on in his life right now and just couldn't get to it.

So, soon ds will be able to serve, and I'll be sitting in the church in a different dress!!

Oh, Poor Karen
I've had this very thing happen on more than one occasion! AT least Fr. can claim some ingnorance about saying something like that, but I've had a bunch of women ask me that, too! I guess they don't know the rule of them, NEVER ask a woman when she's due. If she is, she'll tell you I'm glad you've kept your sense of humor!
But, on the plus side, the ball is rolling for your ds to become an altar server

The same thing has happened to me...except a woman asked me when the baby was due...I was wearing a dress that I had made myself, the very first dress I had ever sewn...and I never wore it again
