It is wonderful isn't it? I think it didn't get much notice because it had a limited release in Decemeber of 2006 presumably to sneak under the deadline for the 2007 Academy Awards which was an already over crowded contest. It was supposed to be released generally in January, but they pushed it back to March. It was a gamble that didn't pay off. I don't think they ever released it to a wider audience because of the lack of notice from the academy. Zellweger did get a Golden Globe nomination. It is one of those amazing movies that will only be appreciated by people like us and people will scratch their heads when they see the movie stats.
Some critics were also upset by the historical inaccuracies which is a tricky line to walk for a biopic, but I don't think it was any worse than Remember the Titans or Walk the Line.
My 2 cents.

It's funny; inaccuracies usually drive me to distraction but they didn't in this case. It's was all fine by me...

I completely agree. I didn't see inaccuracies as much as I saw artistic license. I think fussy critics choose to see what they want to and what they don't want to.

I am SO glad to read all these rave reviews! I just ordered Miss Potter a few days ago without really knowing much about it.
Can't wait till it comes in!!

And fussy homeschoolers who explain about artistic license to their children and describe and/or delve into the true history of the era are teaching their children ever so much more about the world in which we live than those critics who just complain that something is historically inaccurate.
And Elizabeth, after reading your blog post I foresee a great deal of money filtering right through my hands and into a book/DVD store! I *do* thank you for the post. It was lovely, dreamy, and complete. I hope to follow up on it soon.

OK, OK, I don't think I can wait till the 350+ people ahead of me requesting one of the library copies -- so I'm going to need to order Miss Potter, the Journal that's written for kids and the other one Elizabeth recommended, A Life in Nature ... we did an art/nature study of her a few years back, but this will be a GREAT kick off to nature study this year!
Elizabeth, again thanks so much for the review; after not hearing from anyoe who'd actually seen it, I had forgotten about it!

Oh and for those who are ballet fans, Royal Ballet in London did a ballet Tales of Beatrix Potter which we got back when we did the other study -- the kids LOVE the music and the characters are all intermixed -- it's kind of fun to remember the tales or who's-who in her stories!

Mary,
It is definitely worth owning! I didn't think to post a review because I thought everyone would have already seen it. Thanks to all for the other recommendations!

Mary,
I don't think the Beatrix Potter Journal is specifically for kids at all. I know Amazon lists it for 4-8 year olds. It's written entirely in Victorian script. Even my 10yo would prefer it read to her. It's a substantial book, with loads of visual appeal and some hands-on. It would make a great gift for an adult woman who likes Victoriana or Potter or both. It's beautifully done. My children love the book, but it's definitely not limited to them. I've got it on my coffee table in the living room and it's worthy of being a "coffee table book." And it's a bargain at the amazon price, imo.
A Life in Nature is a grown up read--though I've yet to hit anything objectionable for little ears. I'm using the Cottage Tales as a read aloud; I even found it at audible so we can listen on the way to and from Florida.

The series are wonderful -- I've read the first 3, not sure if she's written any others yet. They're charming, old-style cozy mysteries that have fun additional material about BP!
Isn't it cool that we're so interested in BP who lived in the same area of England as CM -- the Armitt Museum in Ambleside has collections of personal papers for both these fine Brits! Field trip anyone?????

Thanks for bumping this up
1 I am a Beatrix Potter fan as well, and had no idea this movie existed. :) I have enjoyed the little animated series of her tales though.
I had to laugh because I started reading the thread and was thinking what amazing weather we must be having across the country this year with ice storms in Texas in July!

Thanks for the movie and book reviews. They look excellent. I'm looking forward spending some time learning more about Beatrix Potter.

Matilda,
Susan Albert has commented on the historical inaccuracies in her review on Amazon

Dh and I just finished watching this wonderful movie. It is such a sweet movie! Why can't there be more movies like this one, so nice, sweet and clean!
God bless,
Jackie

Maybe they changed more than "artistic license" allows, but I don't think it changes my opinion of the movie. Having been a Theater major, I am more than willing to suspend my disbelief.
They did make her out to be a "modern woman" by todays standards (which I never like), but I think she could be considered "modern" by the standards of her time. From a website I found:
Her uncle, Sir Henry Roscoe, was a notable chemist and helped her in her quest to have her work published. In 1896, they met with the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens and other botanists, but they regarded Potter as an amateur and did not take her work seriously. Encouraged by her uncle, Potter wrote a paper about the spores of molds that was delivered to the Linnaean Society of London, but not by Potter because women were not allowed to attend their meetings.
She also published the Tale of Peter Rabbit on her own after it was turned down by 6 different publishers.
By December of 1901, 250 copies of Peter Rabbit had been published. It sold so well, even Conan Doyle had bought a copy for his children, that three months later, she had another 250 copies printed. Potter decided that it wouldn’t hurt to submit her book again to a publisher. She chose Frederick Warne & Co. because their rejection letter was more courteous than the others.
Now I am not a historian, but I think you could say she had some moxie! Perhaps my expectations of Hollywood are so low that a little effort on their part is enough to impress me.

HA! Grace you are not the only one who noticed this....I thought, "hmmm, I know Texas has had a lot of rain lately, but I must have missed the ice storm part."
DUH is me....I just caught this after re-reading the entire thread and paying attention to the dates.

Already been. It truly is lovely. The Beatrix Potter collection is right next to Charlotte Mason's in the Armitt museum. I SO wish I had had a digital camera then. I positively loved the Lake District. My dh keep saying to me throughout the movie "is it really that beautiful there?" --yes, it is!
The movie was absolutely charming. We all enjoyed it. So it wasn't totally accurate --we didn't care!
