Yes, MOLLY!!!!!! Venture! Find a store first...then call to find out their history. You want a store with people who have been in the business for over 10 years. Be totally honest! "I'm pregnant with my 9th baby and my feet are KILLING me!!! Before I put effort into seeing a foot doctor, I thought maybe getting fitted for the RIGHT shoe may help. Can you help me???"
They will also probably know if you if you should see a podiatrist or not.
I'll consider it a victory if I get you out of the house to a bona-fide-shoe-store! ALMOST as victorious as you getting me "all wrapped up" during pregnancy with my belts and hose!!!!

I will let you know how it goes! I just keep thinking, "Isn't it enough that I have to be "all wrapped up"? Do I really need me feet to fail me now, too?!" You would think we would get some sort of freebie on the pregnancy ailment scale for being so open to life. But, I will count my blessings and try to laugh at all these painful annoyances, while counting the days till I get to meet my little guy.

Molly,
There is a school of thought that says shoes are not helping but hurting our feet. The idea being that by supporting our arches so much we are weakening them.
I had plantar faciitis for years --really bad heel pain and sometimes in my arches-- that started with my 6th pregnancy. I tried everything I could. Shoe inserts, night splints, exercises, etc. and never got relief. But I was reading a running blog one day and a sports medicine Dr. said she always tells her patients to stop wearing super supportive shoes and to use those yoga toes things at night. She said sleep with them on and the pain will go away. I bought a knock off pair at the drugstore and tried it and what do you know it worked! Seriously I have no more pain!
That was over 6 months ago and I have been working to strengthen my feet by going barefoot as much as possible, including running barefoot sometimes (our Y has a nice soft indoor track), wearing Nike Free running shoes or my Vibrams. I run 4 times a week at least 3 miles at a time so I am on my feet a lot but they do not hurt at all (mind you my shins are another story!) My shoe size has gone down a half size (they say that happens when your arches get stronger) and I can wear heels and cute shoes again without pain.
Just wanted to share.

I asked for yoga toes for Christmas last year and didn't get them! I even said the other night as I was flipping through FootSmart catalog that if had only gotten them, I wouldn't have foot pain. I didn't know it was really true!
I am a big barefoot person, at least when it is warm. But with my support hose, I need something covering them so they don't wear out too fast. I can't wait to be done with them.
Off to find some yoga toes!

I go barefoot at home when its warm, but when it is cold, I have to keep my feet covered. I got chilblains, I think from wearing shoes two small the Winter and Spring I was pregnant with my first because my feet grew and I didn't buy new ones. They've improved a lot, though, since I started diligently keeping them warm as soon as the weather turns chilly.
I wear wool socks (I have some with grippies that I sometimes pull over other socks or stockings) which might be an option for protecting hose.
I also had a pair of shearling fleece slippers Santa brought me that I wore to pieces and replaced last winter with wool Acorn brand slippers. I really like them for around the house! I think its good to have wool, though, in some form for breathability rather than synthetic. Synthetic fluffy socks make my feet sweat more.

My husband runs barefoot - 3-5 miles/ day. He had to go back to shoes for a bit b/c of a nasty blister, and he began having foot pain.

Michele that is so interesting because my plantar faciitis has gotten so bad over this summer. Fair was sheer agony. Crocs helped but I wore a hole in them. This is the first summer I wasn't as barefoot as normal....you know the stereotype barefoot and pregnant ...that's me but for some reason I had been wearing shoes more I will gladly take them off Annie
