Ladies,
You are all such great resources for things like this. I need book recommendations for my husband. He loves Science Fiction and his favorites are The Lord of the Rings, Eragon series and Fablehaven. (Yes, I know those are kid books but he LOVES those types of books.
He also really liked the Bourne Supremacy series and an occasional Tom Clancy.
He needs reading materials as he is sitting around a lot on off duties (he's in law enforcement).
So lets discuss fictional reading....
Favorite authors?????

My dh is rapidly going through a batch of books, new to him, by Brian Haig. Every trip to the library, I've needed to pick up another one of his books. Haig is a West Point grad and son of Alexander Haig. His books sound gripping, like either Clancy's or the Bourne Ultimatum, but I haven't read any, yet.

My dh loves the Clive Cussler books, he has collected them all. They are adventure books, written very well, not as heavy as Tom Clancy. If he likes the Bourne Supremacy he will like Clive Cussler. Let me know what he thinks.

Vince Flynn is another good espionage type of author.. also David Baldacci..
good adult sci-fi is hard to find.. adult usually puts you into themes of things like cloning and marriage "alternatives" in a manner that is basically approving of them. But if he doesn't mind reading the kids books.. he might enjoy The Ranger's Apprentice series, Red Wall, The Shadow Children
He might also try some of the classic sci-fi which would be a somewhat "safer" read than more modern things. Heinlein has some good books, Ray Bradbury, Jules Verne etc.

Off to request a whole new batch of authors!!!
(And Jodie that's why he likes the kid books at least he doesn't have to deal with some of those "adult themes" And we love Ranger's Apprentice and Redwall too!)

He really liked them but its hard to get all the books in the correct order from the library.
He read everything that you all suggested and his favorite were Cussler and Brian Haig.
He got his hands on the next Ranger's Apprentice though and that has been his read lately

After my husband read all of Cussler's books he has been into Dale Brown and Robert Jordan and a little bit of David Baldacci.

Sounds like our dhs have similar tastes.
What about Tolkien's other works? The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales,...
Dh and I are reading the first Master and Commander book and find it enjoyable. We also liked the Horatio Hornblower series by CS Forester.
Inkheart series (Dh and I only read first. My oldest read the others.)
Count of Monte Cristo and Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas
Sherlock Holmes series by Arthur Conan Doyle.
Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander

Um... they're pretty bad writing, and incredibly long (the series isn't finished and it's 13 books long so far. The author died before he was don't writing them, and another man has taken over). I think it depends on the maturity level of the 16 year old. I strongly dislike his portrayal of men (who are generally henpecked and clueless) and women (domineering harpies).
The protagonist ends up married to multiple women at the same time, the lines between evil and good are unconvincing, and the storytelling is pretty bad- you can hear the cash register racking up profits as he stretches the story on and on.
My then-boyfriend, now husband asked me to read them twelve years ago.
For Tolkienesque high fantasy I'd go with Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series- I read it when I was about sixteen and I still like his writing. I also like Patricia McKillip and Robin McKinley, and C. S. Lewis's Space Trilogy and Till We Have Faces.

I've been meaning to add a book; some of your dh's may snicker. Last year, after watching P&P with me for the ??? time, dh actually picked up my copy and read it. He liked it!! He's read it twice, now!
I get into a Jane Austen mode every February. I don't know why. So I always have to read at least one of her books and watch my videos!

Our library has these So regards fantasy, is it clear the lines between good and evil? And do these books contain any 'adult' scenes? You have really caught our interest. Thank you.

Erin, I haven't read any of these authors but one place I like to check for reviews is The Christian Guide to Fantasy. They have reviews of Robin McKinley and Patricia McKillip on this page. It looks like some books by these authors might be okay and some would not be.
