Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I actually like to have a glass while I am making dinner. A little wine, a little music... Makes the task more pleasant. May even lead to dancing!

Are you peeking on me in my kitchen? I love to cook and once I have the dinner mostly done, I enjoy a nice glass of wine, usually red, but lately I have been sampling some very nice whites as well.

I am not a wine expert. My sil and brother know a lot about wines and in fact, they own a wine store/bar where they do wine tastings. I cannot narrow down my choices as much as Nancy, but I know that I prefer reds from Italy, France and Spain. And I tend to stick with French, Italian and German wines for the white.

That is not to say that I won't drink a wine from California or Australia. There are some very nice choices, but I do have to live within our budget!

My dh loves beer. And in this country there are lots of choices, but his favorite is Newcastle. I love the names of the beer--Bishop's Finger, Spitfire, Hobgoblin, Fursty Ferret to name a few. And his hobby now is to brew beers. He has also started decanting some very nice country wines for me to sample on as well.

We have a wonderful selection for mixed drinks. I can honestly say that for Indpendence Day, we drank Pimms No. 1. I do not know how to make this drink, but it is wonderful to share with friends on a nice sunny afternoon.

I also love margaritas. And my sil fixed a Mexican martini when I was home. I really enjoyed them immensely.

We tend to experiment with the liqueors we buy when we travel. In Malta, we sampled a wonderful drink made from prickly pear cactus. Parts of the island were covered with these cacti...it looked a lot like west Texas/New Mexico. Mixed with some white wine (or champagne), it makes a wonderful appertif.

I voted for beer and mixed drinks. The competitor in me REALLY wants to see more votes for beer! I'm going to find last year's beer recommendation topic and bump it in the hopes of garnering more votes .

#1 - Beer - see above link.

#2 - Margarita in the summer and with Mexican - check out this vitamix whole fruit version

- Baily's on the rocks in the winter - I really want to try a homemade version of Irish Cream this year. Oh, and spiked egg nog at Christmas.

#3 - Sangria or chianti at Italian Restaurants. I may need to alternate with Sambuca (straight), which I haven't had in years.

You know what else I may need to revisit from my pre-children days (no, not jello shooters )? Gin and tonic with lime...perfect in the summer heat. And Ouzo straight with Greek food or as a warming drink for winter.

I may need to reconsider wine. Dry red wine. I bet that's a whole other topic .

Love,

Beer - Abita Purple Haze

Love, love, love, Bailey's in coffee when it's cold out!

Sorry but I cannot stand Margaritas --and I have had "good" ones but, the tequila . . . ugh (Sorry MacBeth!)

Any kind of mixed drink with rum and coconut.

I'm pretty across the board of liking different drinks at different times.

I did not like mead. Too sweet. And that probably indicates what kinds of drinks I do choose -- I like dry, not sweet, tart is great.

Margaritas done well (Top Shelf) on the rocks, no salt, yummy!

Bourbon and Diet Coke is my choice of mixed drink (Jameson or Maker's Mark).

Dh and I love to have our dry white or red wine in the evening (after the kiddies have gone to bed), and lately it's been sparkling wines (like cava, Champagne, prosecco...dry, not sweet.

Beer and wine we enjoy, especially trying out different varieties. Whereever we have travelled we like to try the home brands. I loved Pilsner in Prague, and enjoyed different Irish Stout in Ireland. It's been a long time, but leaves for long enjoyable memories.

All this discussion brings to mind my favorite memory. My MIL has very funny views on alcohol, which has taken adjusting. My father had no idea that she didn't drink and kind of disapproved. The dinner which she met my parents he ordered a bottle of wine, and then we went to another place for Irish coffee. I'm surprised she approved of our marriage!

But she does allow it to be served at the special occasion meals, and she sets the table with wine glasses. Except these wine glasses are actually cordial glasses (only hold 2 oz. or less), very tiny glasses, but she is convinced they are real wine glasses.

The Thanksgiving dinner after my first son was born, I had 3 or 4 cordial glasses of wine, which would be the equivalent of one and a half maybe of a standard glass of wine. She was sure I was drunk after that meal. And she still talkes about that!

So fun reading everyone's favorite DRINKS!

I'm also another one who needs the "All of the Above" answer!!!!

I checked WINE and BEER, though...which is what I drink most often.

White Wine: Chardonnay
Red Wine: Chianti

And, yes.....my little glass of wine often accompanies dinner prep over here too!

We LOVE our MICROBREW BEERS over here! So many good ones in the Pacific Northwest!   My husband used to brew his own.....oh-how-I-miss-those-days!!!!!! And, I especially crave beer when I'm pregnant. (Jodie.....I'm sure that MEANS something, doesn't it??? )

Mixed drink favorites are:    SLIGHTLY DIRTY GIN MARTINI, a GIN-TONIC, and a GIN GIMLET. Basically, I love GIN!!!!

Sweeter summer drink favorites are TOM COLLINS,   MARGUERITA and KIR.

And, I love WHITE RUSSIANS, KAHLUA-n-CREAM, B-52, or just GRANDE-MARNIER-on-the-rocks in the winter for dessert.

as it so happens ... brewers yeast IS good for you when pregnant/nursing.. It is an excellent source of B vitamins, protein and minerals. Of course.. having to get the brewer's yeast without the beer takes all the fun out of it
