Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

It's only in retrospect that I realize how lucky I was in regard to books. My mom was young and unmarried when I was born, and we certainly didn't have lots of money, but I remember reading TONS and TONS of books. We must have gone to the library an awful lot, instead of buying them, because it seems as if every time I mention a book to my mom that I loved when I was really little, she says, "Oh, we used to check that one out from the library all the time!"
