I just heard from Michael, and he will definitely be having surgery in the next day or two. The rod attached to his upper spine is infected and needs to be removed. The pain is probably related to this, but they will be checking during the operation to see whether there is anything else that needs to be fixed. The good news is that the surgery will not be as major as those he has had previously - he will be in the hospital for a few days, then they are saying several weeks for recovery. The worry is that all spinal surgery of this type carries an inherent risk to the spinal cord. Please pray that the operation will be successful.
I have a small additional prayer request. Our one car is in the garage today to have its brakes fixed and a couple of other minor repairs. Hopefully it needs nothing more than brake pads, but there is a possibility it could be something more major. It has to pass a government test of roadworthiness by tomorrow or it will be illegal for me to drive it (this test / repair thing has been an ongoing saga for the past month, and has ended up being pushed to the wire). Right now I really need that car! And I don't need a huge bill for a major repair.

I just saw this Kathryn. I will sure pray for a succesful surgery and for fit car.
Do you know when the surgery is going to be? So i can pray especially that day.

I can't thank you all enough for the prayers. We visited Michael this afternoon. His pain has eased considerably and he is in very good spirits, as am I - I'm sure this is an answer to prayer  . We don't know yet when they will operate, or many details about what exactly they are planning to do. When he saw the doctors this morning his brain was in too much of a spin to think what questions to ask. We are guessing that the operation will be on either Friday or Monday. He has a slightly raised temperature so they may need to get that down first. I took advantage of the nurse who came round taking blood pressure and temperature to get my BP checked and it was absolutely normal, so pregnancy wise I think I'm doing OK  .
The car is back, in good health and legal. It only needed a minor fix . The girls are being great and helping out where they can. I'm trying to keep things on as much of an even keep as possible for them. Today has been Rachel's 11th birthday, and we went out and celebrated with a pizza lunch. My mother was planning to come and visit today anyway, so she provided transport.
So far, so good, but please keep up the prayers!
