Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My kids watch so little tv that it is quite a treat and keeps the older ones completely engaged for the entire trip. I just like to get them something new to watch. I enjoy hearing what they are watching because generally it is something I love as well I don't put a screen in front of the 9mo as I don't find it appropriate for her age and feel that it would cause more problems than it would solve.

I would love to do our trip in two days instead of one. But because of my 3yos food allergies it is too much of a hassle. I would have to make sure to pack enough food for her for the 2 days. It doesn't sound like a lot, but if something should happen and we run out of food for her I would be in big trouble. I know, I worry too much and am probably making a mountain out of a molehill, but anyway that is our situation. Our halfway point is Niagara Falls which would be a lovely place to stay over.   Perhaps someday we will, but it certainly won't be on the way out this time as we have a bit of a deadline (we have a polka festival to attend the day after we arrive )

I held off on getting a DVD player for a long time. I agree that I would like the kids to enjoy the sights and do other things, but I wasn't having success with that. We only pull it out for trips that are over 2.5 hours long or when the 3yo has to go down to Philly to see one of her specialists. Trips under 2.5 hours our kids are expected to amuse themselves (with our help of course). Perhaps I am lazy, but I tried to make it work for years and it just didn't. Our trip to MI is much more bearable now with the DVD player. Really, the only time the olders might fuss is at the very end. When we are about 5 miles from our destination we have to go through customs to come back into the US and the bridge is often backed up. At that point, they know they are close, it has been a long day and they just want to get there and see everyone.

Beth, I hope you don't think I was being preachy! We use the DVD player liberally! I was just offering suggestions.

I hear you on the food allergies dilemma!

I haven't seen this in a LONG time so definitely preview or read a review somewhere, but how about Pirates of Penzance (it's the only one I thought of that someone else hadn't already posted!)

Karen, does it have Gene Kelly? There are several theatrical versions of Pirates on Netflix, but I seem to recall a movie musical version (MGM maybe) of which I've seen clips in documentaries, but I've never seen the original, and it doesn't seem to be available on Netflix.

For a good bit of goofy (really goofy) fun, how about Peter Pan with Mary Martin? My kids crack up at the silly songs and silly scenes.

They're not good musicals with great songs.. but I've found that the Winnie the Pooh movies (Piglet's Big Movie, The Tigger Movie, The Heffalump Movie, etc) are very calming to my kids and the tunes are catchy and sweet. Lots of fun memories cuddling with my toddlers in a big recliner while we watched them (sometimes falling asleep there)
