Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I also second Jenn's and Linday's recommendation of Married Saints and Blesseds, this is a fantastic, meaty book and it is comforting to know there is a saint and marriage situation for everyone!! It is a book that you will pick and read, over and over again..it is one of my bathtime favourites!

One of my favorite married Saints is Frances of Rome.
Forty years of marriage and four children.

"Sometimes a wife must leave God at the altar to find him in her household managment."

I find this to be a reminder that my children will some day grow up and that most likely I too will one day be a widow.

[On a practical level it's easier to be widely known if you start an order or are part of an order- I'm sure that there are many moms and grandmoms among the unknown saints that we remember on All Saint's Day]

This is exactly what I have been thinking since this thread started.

Here are two of my favorite:

1. Mothers of the Saints: Portraits of Ten Mothers of Saints and Three Saints Who were Mothers - Wendy Leifeld

2. The Family That Overtook Christ - M. Raymond - about the family of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux

I am wholly fascinated by Blessed Alice of Montbar who raised a family of Saints - Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and 6 blesseds. She is my inspiration!

Has anyone mentioned The Story of a Family: The Home of St. Therese of Lisieux? I loved that one.

I echo the recommendation for The Family That Overtook Christ! We just received a new copy of the book, as well as the study guide version, and are trying to do it as a Summer family read-aloud.
The family includes:
Venerable Tescelin (father)
Blessed Alice (mother)
Blessed Guy
Blessed Gerard
St. Bernard
Blessed Humbeline
Blessed Andrew
Blessed Bartholomew
Blessed Nevard

Another book that might be of interest is "To Weave a Garment", the story of Maria Dabrowska Kolbe, mother of St. Maximilian Kolbe. The back cover tells readers, "To Weave a Garment is the first biography of Maria Dabrowska Kolbe. This retelling was conceived with all mothers in mind, women who love deeply and suffer much."

The Family That Overtook Christ -- I had no idea it was in reprint. Is it a good reprint, firm binding? Ive Press I've never heard of before.

And one more question, is the study edition include the whole book along with study material? I've seen all these guides by Janet McKenzie and was curious is it just Q&A or what kind of "study" is it?

And I also love "Story of a Family".

Jenn - I do not own this (I would love to but I am rather ignorant about how to buy out of print books) - I read some of it briefly earlier this year - when visiting - and the only saints I read in it were Blessed Alice and Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. I know Jane de Chantal was in there too.

On thing I should mention - there are a couple of Protestant mothers in there - I think.(so the definition of "saint" is wide) I am sure I saw Susanna Wesley in there and perhaps another. I hope that someone on the list has the book and can clarify.

My main focus was Blessed Alice - I was mainly on a quest to find out about here! My impression is that the book is very nicely written and inspiring - but I would love to hear from anyone who has read the whole book.

The copies we recently acquired were purchased through Amazon. There is a webpage listed in the version published by IVE press: www.ivepress.org
I'm don't know how to judge bindings, but the cover of the IVE copy has a beautiful illustration of Christ embracing St. Bernard.

It appears that the Study Edition by Janet P. McKenzie (published by Biblio Resource Publications, Inc.) contains the full text, along with Quotations for Discussion and Meditation at the end of each chapter (which are simply quotes taken from within the chapters), an Appendix with The Language of Faith for Confirmands, as well as footnotes throughout (which appears to be lacking in the reprint by IVE press, and if memory serves me correctly, may not have been in the OOP version, either).

I didn't realize the two books would both contain the full text when I ordered, but I actually appreciate having both editions. The IVE press copy contains spaces between dialogue and paragraghs, which I find appealing, as well as a lighter, more old-fashioned font, which I find pleasing to the eye. Both books have their merits. If you're looking for additional information for rabbit trails while reading, the Study Edition's footnotes would prove useful. The SE Appendix is intended for help in preparing for Confirmation, with a list of standard prayers and formulas of Catholic doctrine that can easily be found elsewhere. The opening page of the Appendix gives some interesting information on recent Church emphasis on using the Compendium of the CCC for high students (and even junior high students).

If you're looking for assistance in studying The Family That Overtook Christ further I would recommend the Study Edition....for pleasure reading, I'd suggest the IVE edition. I'm thankful to have both...a grace-filled error.

Can I also throw St. Monica out there - she is a big inspiration to me as she prayed for her wayward son unceasingly until he not only became a great saint but a doctor of the church - St. Augustine!

St. Monica, The Power of a Mother's Love.
