Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I found some "older" bananas on clearance for .29/lb today...

Wow! Score, Jodie!

FYI...Bananas freeze amazingly well. Peel them and break them in half or thirds. Place on a cookie sheet in freezer. Let freeze and then place in plastic bag to keep in freezer.

You can use these frozen bananas for smoothies (just throw in the frozen chunks!). Or defrost later for Banana Bread.

What a deal you found!

I do freeze bananas.. this time I was looking for a way to have something cold and the bananas caught my attention.. and pudding was a nice cool treat without being icecream or such.

I got a couple of boxes of peaches for making jam when they were on sale recently.. now I just need to blanch them and peel them and pit them and I can stuff them into freezer bags until I have time/inclination to make the jam

And the fruit stand guy from out of town will be here tomorrow.. I'm hoping he has more apricots at the price he had last time.. those are my favorite for jam.. but he didn't have enough to bother with by the time I got there last week.

Grapes are still on sale here for .99/lb and cherries are $1.49/lb great price for cherries but still rather on the costly side for me to get much of.

Prices are the major ouch. I know Safeway isn't in the top 5 stores for prices, but the other day I dropped in there (it's 5 minutes from my house) and grapes were $2.99 lb

oh and Michaela, did you know that the sales flyer for Safeway is online.. so you could easily check for good sales without having to make an extra stop unless something is too good to miss.

No time to read the whole topic, but to answer the question - we go through a whole lot of fruit. Here is my pitiful attempt to deal with our love of fruit!

1. I only purchase fresh fruit that is less than a dollar a pound.

2. I purchase some produce through a co-op and I buy in bulk.

3. I encourage children to see fruit as "God's candy." Try not to eat too much.

4. Try to eat a variety (choose different colors.)

5. Try to take only your share (consider that mom isn't as quick to get to the grapes.) Portion out the good stuff (yep, place cherries in individual bags with each family name.)

5. I buy frozen fruit (for when fresh runs out, for smoothies.)

6. I buy #10 cans of peaches and pineapple.

Now...if I could just get us to love veggies half as much as fruit!

Love,

I like idea #5 Angie! (The first #5 ) Actually, they're all good ideas but I think portioning out the good stuff would help keep the peace around here. There's nothing more pittiful than a 7 yo crying because he didn't get any nectarines! I say that jokingly, but my kids really do get upset when one person eats most of the fruit. I do too! I'm wondering if I can even find some indiviual containers and give them each a ration of fruit per day ... or am I making this too complicated? (One of my many flaws! )

....don't even talk about the amount of watermelon in the summer....

Our youngest ds requested three things for his 6th birthday. He wanted our entire family (dh, me, and all the boys) to go see "Toy Story 3," he wanted an aquarium, and he wanted watermelon!!!    I think this crowd can easily eat a watermelon a day. Actually, I think my dh could eat one all by himself!

God Bless,
