I am kind of torn on this one because I felt called several yrs ago to begin the Devotion to Holy Face of Jesus which I love but I know the kids and especially dh would love to celebrate Mardis Gras .Must be his french side coming out
Then I learned about Shrove tuesday and I like that holiday .
I am like this with Halloween too I just never ever liked it even as a child but All Soul's day is my fav day of the yr. I like parties but not loud or with lots of people .
So I like with Halloween try to celebrate a little to have fun with the kids . I make german pancakes kinda inbetween a crepe & a pancake . We dust them with powdered sugar & drizzle lemon juice on them .
The yr. I taught catechism we made the pancakes then I had the kids do a craft making the image His Face on clay slabs .They really enjoyed that hands on craft .
I really want to try the king cake ! So thinking we will have a devotional time for the Holy Face of Jesus and then honour Him with His king cake .
Maybe I'll put on some jazz just to make dh happy .

We missed the Mardi Gras party at church and I don't even know if I'm going to be able to put together tomorrow's jambalaya due to a respiratory thingie that's making a circuit through our family AGAIN. It hit me December 23rd and it's hitting me all over again. I am so of being !!!
My family usually rallies somehow and we manage to make something out of nothing when I am ill. I must admit that last Christmas was the most relaxed one we've had EVER!

We had a Lundi Gras party tonight --complete with fastnachts (gotta mix it up)! My son and daughter in law did a drive by and threw beads to the little kids --it was cute. We're doing a fastnacht thing at RCIA tomorrow (which is why we did the family thing tonight). We will be having pancakes in the morning, and of course, more fastnachts!
I have been trying to make a King cake. I've made 5 so far, all with supposedly "authentic" recipes. The trouble is, our friend from New Orleans (Chalmette) says they are good but not quite right. My son who lived down there for a few years agrees. I don't know what missing and they can't seem to tell me either. I'm going to give it one last try tomorrow --wish me luck!

Good luck with the cake, Michele!
We are having pancakes for dinner tonight. I have some Mardi Gras beads from all the years of past Mardi Gras Church parties. We will decorate the table with those and purple, green and yellow playsilks. I'll arrange it together as a centerpiece of sorts.

Lacy, thanks for the link. My boys had a riot shaking their color sugar containers. We're making a bundt cake and sprinkling the sugars on top.

Mardi Gras isn't my tradition so I am very late to this party!
Where would I purchase the plastic baby for the cake?
How far off the mark is this Easy Mardi Gras King Cake?
I've never seen or tasted this cake IRL...what seems to be the key flavors? Cinnamon sugar? Lemon frosting?
Lacy, thanks for the colored sugar tip!
Love,

We're not doing much of Mardi Gras. I had so many choices at the grocery store, but I was afraid of having all that leftover mocking and tempting me tomorrow! So we'll eat out as a family!

We are going out to eat too!
My kids made a ton of cupcakes and are going to decorate them with all the sugars, toppings and such after we come home.
Have a great evening Ladies!

Well, the jambalaya is almost complete. I have to make a pot of rice, a salad, and add the shrimp to the pot of "jumbled mess" Smells delicious! The recipe I'm using this year is far easier than the last one we used. That decided things. Hopefully, my daughter will fix us some kind of dessert. I am so not a dessert person.

We had a fun party with our local suport group this morning - with kings cakes made by a New Orleans native!
Tonight we were just invited to eat all the goodies with some seminarian brothers, who are friends of ours. They do the "Great Fast" so really are getting rid of everything - eggs, butter, milk...

Here's our King Cake . What it lacked in authenticity, it made up in child-friendly preparation and fool-proof outcome .
Are the little baby toys found at a party store? I found some on Amazon but YIKES, they are 6 for $15.00.
Thanks for the inspiration, ladies .
Love,

We just use a little plastic baby--probably from the baby shower stuff at a craft store--very cheap.

Very cheap sounds good to me! Thanks, Laura. You can tell how little time I spend in the craft store .
I wonder if they are at party stores too?
