Oh Karen, I just recently heard of something you can do with outgrown or stained tee-shirts.. you sew the bottom edge together then cut around the arm holes and neck to open it up and leave you with handles.. making a very simple cloth bag for shopping or such.

I am wearing my patched jeans today and hoping they hold together for a while. I can't figure out why the top corners of the pockets (the ones nearest the center back seam of my jeans) keep tearing out. It's a problem because I can't wear most brands of jeans, and, while this one fits, the pockets chronically tear away.

There are so many great ideas here!

And, if anyone has a link to a "how to darn" website, I'm all ears! (Eyes! Fingers! Whatever!)

Jodie, there are tons of ideas for old T shirts; I've heard but not tried the grocery bag one. Also you can use the unstained, intact areas to make simple cloth baby hats to send for charity - there was one last year collecting these specifically - those newborn, knotted top hats. But I have been saving our shirts specifically for making rugs - it takes a lot of "tarn" (T shirt yarn) to make one!

nancy, Here is a link to one method of darning. You may have to sign in to view it, not sure. Depending on the yarn content sometimes I use wooly nylon from the sewing store; it's very durable and won't fray away. You can use it alone for darning or carried along with the yarn, and even carry it along while knitting just the heels for extra reinforcement. I prefer my socks to be 100% wool, though; b/c the nylon seems to make my feet sweat.

While doing some brainstorming yesterday, I remembered that I keep intending to learn more about book repair. I called the library and spoke with the librarian who does all of their mending, and he recommended the following basic supplies:

  • White glue and rubberbands for putting the spine back on a book.
  • 3M Booktape #845
  • Flimoplast by Neschen (when searching, apparently there are other versions/brands of this) for repairing torn pages


Anyway, I do find that our "books to repair" pile has gotten pretty large, and I would like something that will both look nicer and hold up better than my present packaging/scotch tape regime.
