There are two ladies at our TLM that both wear gray wool hats rather than veils/scarves, and they both look so stylish in a classy, vintage sort of way. I very much admire that look, but I've always felt like I didn't look good in hats. Maybe I'll have to try it out again, though. I asked my husband what he thought of their hats and he really liked them too.
Really interesting info, ladies. I am clueless on this matter!

Starting to wear a hat is a bit like wearing a costume at first. You feel a little silly. You're not used to how you look with it on so the automatic reaction is to think it doesn't look good because it looks difference.
But you know what, I've never had anyone come up to me and tell me I look rediculous  Actually, I've had a number of people tell me how nice it looks or how much they enjoy seeing a woman wearing a hat (these are often an older generation). And I get women confiding in me that they'd love to wear hats but think they look silly in them.
for cheap hats.. look NOW for WINTER hats (I guess ladies in Australia should be looking for summer hats) I was just looking around at basic stores like Kohl's and JCPenney and Coldwater Creek.. clearance areas.. and I'm seeing some cute winter hats that were $40 selling for around $15.
I need to get me a simple inexpensive summer hat this year.. but I want to try and remember at the end of summer to watch for a nice hat on clearance.
Oh and I got the Easter hat I posted early in the thread on ebay.. much cheaper than getting a fancy hat though a store.

I was taught that a woman can wear a hat as she sees fit. It wasn't about the hat itself (whether it was pinned, matchedher outfit, or was pretty) but rather about a woman being womanly and having special privileges therefor - a woman thing. Am I the only one who was taught this? Could it be a generation or regional thing? Could it be that the ladies I grew up with didn't ever have the opportunity to wear a baseball cap at a basebal game so missed this one caveat?

I think that perhaps that has evolved more as women stopped being womanly about wearing a cap.
It wasn't typical at all when/where I grew up for women to wear men's ballcaps anywhere.
And I've noticed at swim meets that people can look ascant at you for wearing a womanly hat during the National Anthem. Basically, all they know anymore for hat ettiquette is that you remove your hat for the National Anthem and when dining indoors (though even that is lax)

Being from the south, maybe part of my answer is cultural, but I was always taught the same thing...and I intend to keep on livin' that way, thank ya very much (she says in her most exaggerated southern drawl)!

It may be cultural.. a response to women acting less womanly.. which does seem more prevelent in some areas and less so in others.

We had a very traditional priest for awhile (in New England) who would refuse communion to women wearing baseball caps. Maybe a bit extreme, I don't know but this same priest would have been glad to have us all nicely hatted or veiled otherwise. I was always taught that a woman wearing a man's hat followed a man's rules. I bet it is a regional thing.

I am not much of a hat person, but I do like headscarves or even a snood. My favorite look is the medieval look and I think most ladies' hats go better with modern, tailored clothing. I guess I am a pre-17th Century kind of woman.  I prefer looser tunic type clothing and mostly wear knits. To me at least most hats don't look good with those kinds of clothes. I did use to have a wide-brimmed sun hat that I would wear when I was in the SCA (medieval history reenactment)...not sure where it's got to these days...but it was fun to wear and practical too. Now I just have a foldable soft UV-protected gardening hat that I purchased from REI (a sporting goods store). Not very stylish but it works.

I look good in hats, but find it difficult to find hats that fit. My head is very big - all brain!  NOT! I also have sensitive, fair skin, so in the summer I wear a lot of visors. If I could find a hat that would fit my big fat head and stay put while riding a bike , then that would be ideal. I am not a baseball cap kind of girl. I do have a wide brimmed straw hat for the garden, but doesn't work for biking.
Another issue I have is that I am losing my hair along the hairline around my face and in the bangs area. I am looking for hat/scarf alternatives to 'mask' this problem...I don't want to be mistaken for a muslim woman, of which there are many in my town. I am also very tall, wear skirts and speak with a foreign accent. So, let's just say, I am VERY different anyway, so my hat/scarf can not be too outlandish.

I love hats! I wear hats and scarves to Mass. My favorite is the vintage cloche styles.
A good place to find, cute, understated hats is etsy.com: type in "cloche" or "bucket hats".

I was taught the same.
I love hats but I am just not sure I look good in them (Lindsay you definitely do!).
Maybe I just need to try again with the right hat. My dh does like them and I would not stand out in one at the Latin Mass. I actually have some patterns for hats --I really like this one. It's a Butterick pattern. I think I would have to practice wearing it because I am sure I would be bumping my dh with the rim!

But seriously doesn't it take a bit of practice? I can see me jumping in the car and bumping my hat askew. I am not the most graceful of ladies.

Yes for bending down it does.. I never thought of the car thing.. with my van and my height I'm already half climbing into it.. my head doesn't get anywhere near bumping unless I'm trying to stand up when I'm inside rather than just sitting.
Oh and I just found that there are a LOT of hats at Sears of all places.. at least online. Cheap ones, expensive ones, some in the middle.. lots of different styles. I'm think a cheap one or two would be great for a summer hat.
I saw a lovely hat for winter but.. being wool felt it's not on the cheap side My mom and my sister and I have always said we have champagne taste on a beer budget

I am not the most naturally graceful of women either... which is why I stick to small brimmed hats. I think this one is lovely. Simple, classic... goes with everything.

that is very cute Ellie.. but my hair would put it over my eyes I really can't do bucket or cloche styles.
I was thinking this casual sun hat would be fun for wearing to the pool or park or lacrosse games etc.
And I think this style would be a lovely church hat for summer
