We received word, yesterday, that my husband's mother was in a terrible accident. She is vacationing in Hawaii with her dear friends, and while on a hike, up a very steep, muddy, and slippery hillside, she slipped and fell, hitting her head on the ground hard enough to cause a concussion and break two vertebrea in her neck!
There is hardly any word on her condition, my FIL is anxiously awaiting word. The doctors do not yet know if she requires surgery, or what the nuerological assessment is. She is loaded up with pain medications, and may not be able to make her flight (on Saturday), back home and will be in the hospital, for an unknown time.
Please pray for her!
********Update, June 24th********
Well, if you can believe it, it has been three months since my MIL's horrific accident that left her neck broken in 5 places.
I wanted to let you all know that yesterday her team of specialists felt confident enough in her progress to remove the steel-rod halo that had been affixed to her head with metal screws. Having worn her halo for that length of time has left her head feeling quite heavy and she cannot support herself via her neck, due to the amount of muscular atrophy from not having used her neck for so long (similar to a newborn baby...). She will still have to wear a rigid brace for some time, but will be able to remove it while sleeping.
As you might imagine her life for the past three months has been quite difficult. Daily peroxide cleaning around the metal screws in her head, not being able to take a shower or get her upper body wet because of the halo support-vest worn 24/7 (my loving FIL washed her hair with such care everyday), losing her balance while simply walking upstairs, not being able to sleep lying down for three months, banging her halo into doors and cupboards constantly (this is actually funny and God love my MIL because she has a sense of humor about this and actually allowed her girlfriends to decorate her "antlers" as she called them). And of greatest, she now has her freedom back and can drive a car once again. All of these things were a welcome cross to carry because she knows how very, very fortunate she is to have not suffered paralysis; this even astounded her team of specialists. Her recovery continues, and years of physical therapy are forthcoming, but again, she welcomes this knowing how it all could have been.
She is humbled by this experience and is hold forever with gratitude those that took the time to pray for her.
Thank you all .

I wanted to give an update on my MIL's status. She was able to travel today and is, as I type, enroute home. They managed to change her flight to upgrade her to first class, so that she will be much more comfortable as she travels back home.
My FIL is here, at my home, for the day. The only flight back home, for her, was at SeaTac, near where we live. She'll arrive late tonight, then she'll have to travel several hours, south, via car, to her home. From what my FIL has gathered, the severe injury that she sustained was the exact injury that paralyzed Christopher Reeves. The doctors in Hawaii were a bit baffled that she isn't paralyzed herself. However, her condition is still so very fragile because on mis-step (even turbulence on the plane) could cause further damage. My gosh! I am just shaking my head in disbelief as to what her life will become in the coming weeks, months, and perhaps years of recovery.
Your continued prayers, through this most delicate time for her, is so very much appreciated. My FIL seems to be handling it all well, though he's also quite good at masking his anxiety and stress.
Blessings to you, and thanksgiving for your prayers.

Oh, Chris...it's wonderful that your MIL is not paralyzed, for sure, but to endure that flight and drive will be so hard.
I am praying right now!
