Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hsmom - I think it's kerfuffle. Meaning to become disheveled.       I love the words they use in those shows!

MaryK, you are so funny!

I love words. I even had a supervisor (long past college jobs...real world management) mention my, uh, large vocabulary in an annual evaluation.

My 12-year-old's word of the week is CANTICLE. I have no idea why.

And, in honor of St. Patrick's Day, I'll offer you the word FEIS ("fesh"). This word means "competition" in Irish, with particular reference to an officially-sanctioned Irish dance competition.

Another of my favorite Irish words (this one is Anglo-Irish) is DONNYBROOK, which means a brawl with many participants. The high school disco I used to attend in Ireland (we called it Wesley, after the rugby clubhouse it was held in, but now it's The Wez) was/still is located in a Dublin suburb called Donnybrook. I'm just sayin'.

In case you're heading to a St. Paddy's Day event, please remember the word SLAINTE ("slawnt-yuh"), which is a toasting word meaning "health" in Irish.

And, in Ireland, it's always polite to say, "Dia is Muire duit," or, "God and Mary be with you." (Di-ya s'muhr-uh doo-it, but say the last part quickly, like "dwit".)

Isn't that nice? Austria's the same...you're greeted with, "God's Greetings!" instead of, "Hello."

Thank you! I had tried googling it, putting the tv on mute so the words would come across the bottom, all to no avail. I should have just come here and asked! We have many opportunities around here to use the word "kerfluffle".

I think my mom used that word occasionally, but honestly I had no idea it was a real word.      I think I'm going to make a point of using it today.   I'm sure dd will think I've made it up.

My family has a word.    We do like to read the dictionary and quiz each other. One evening, many years ago, we came across the word "bremsstrahlung."

We all loved it!    Basically, it means "braking radiation," or the radiation produced when a charged particle suddenly slows.

I haven't got a hope in the world that I'll ever be able to fit that into a conversation!    But we still love the whole sound of it, just the same.

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

My 7 yr old is using EXQUISITE a good deal lately.

All of my little ones have a good vocabulary (except for the twins, who don't talk--STILL!--although they are quite vocal with the grunts and groans and growls and such).

Velocipede. That's a cool word. Not one I will ever use. I do enjoy other words...behemoth. Leviathan. Those are neat words.

Let's see..ones I use on a regular basis?

Would you believe me if I said my mind is blank on it? LOL. I just *use* the words, I don't think of how rare they are in normal conversation (a sure sign one is either an eccentric academic or a homeschooling parent, lol).

BOMBASTIC! I love it! My college choral director used it frequently and, although I think it's a little beyond the correct usage of the word, I use it to describe my kids when their behavior is *over the top*. Especially my intense, spirited son. He is bombastic.

I love "petulant". So much so that I posted about it a long time ago...

I love words that just sound exactly like their meaning, lol.

My 13yo loves the word "pugnacious" lately and uses it to describe Kain, her cousin, quite a bit.

I don't know if I "love" this word but I use it alot: FACETIOUS.

I don't know where or why but I remember when I first started dating my husband at the ripe old age of 18 I said to him one time "I'm just being facetious." And he looked at me like, HUH?

Another word:
PROVIDENCE

I came to like this word after Pa Ingalls used it so much (or rather Laura used it so much in her Little House books in relaying words of her father). I absolutely love the sound (and meaning) of it. And even better if said with a British accent (don't ask me why that's just how I interpret it) is this phrase:
It's simply providential.

I recently encountered   compenetration while reading Journey to Easter by Pope Benedict XVI

"...only that unity divinity and humanity which in Christ is not parallelism, where one stands alongside the other, but real compenetration- compenetration between God and man - means salvation for mankind"

Rather more abbreviated than most of your choices, but I must admit to a fondness for the words CAD and TAD (we use 'a tad peckish' around here _all_ the time:-) )

Jen, I meant to come back here and tell you I watched McClintock this weekend because you mentioned it here. SO fun!

PETULANT was another great word in that movie!

My new favorite word is vex. Or vexing, or vexatious. I also have a list of words I loathe. Words like rump and mosey.

[Gasp] Mosey? I think it is a great word. It sounds just like what it means!
