Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Thanks, Jen. It helps to know about the size. I asked my dh if he could make me some, and he said no because he doesn't have the right tools to make the round head. I am going to approach him again and see if he could the right tools.

I agree having a bigger canvas would be nice. And I would love to make these for baptism and other gifts for friends and family.

I use the craft acrylic paints from Michaels. I just pick up whatever is on sale. I have discovered that sharpies work really well for the details. However, you have to wait until the paint is truly dry (such as over night) otherwise they gum up. I just bought a few paint pens in gold (for details) and brown (for faces). I am hoping these help. I am not steady with the tiny brushes needed for sweet faces.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for this tip! I was wondering why my Sharpie was getting gummed up. I really want to get some little brushes for the faces, too

Have you seen Gae's Painted Saints? And she assures me she has had no previous painting experience.

Another blog with saints is Blair's Blessings. Her saints are so sweet too. I love looking at everyones work!

I am very un-crafty without someone's lead. All those blocks of wood in the craft aisle just look like hunks of tree until someone shows me how cute it can be.

Anyone else with pictures?

Also, what size wooden pegs are you using? I have tried both the 2" and 3".

I have learned a few things on my painted saint journey...

1. It is good to have a base coat. If you paint on bare wood, there is little hope of removing the paint if you make a mistake. If you use a sharpie on bare wood, it will feather and bleed.
I like the natural wood tone for the faces, but I've had, ahem.... several disasters with spooky looking eyes- not what you want in a saint. So now I mix tan and white to give a neutral primer coat to the whole figure first.

2. Don't use Modge Podge. It will make Sharpie on bare wood run, and it will give the face a blue tinge.... again, don't ask me how I know.....

3. High gloss acrylic sealer spray to finish makes a beautiful coat.

4. If you make a huge, glaring mistake (or several of them), not to worry. ANY blooper can be covered up with primer, and you just start again.

I found this site : craftparts.com for ordering all different sizes of peg people. I really like the 2 3/8in tall men. That seems to be a good size. I don't like the smaller 2 inch "girl" as well, although I have painted many of them. It's just a tad too small for me. I wish there was a 2 3/8 inch girl shape. The 2 and 1/4 inch woman shape is OK- kind of hard to paint on the curves, though.
I just ordered the really tall man and lady shapes, so I'll see how I like them.

I'm having a lot of fun with this!

Craftparts.com

I also found this helpful about kid-safe sealers to finish the saints.

Here are a few of my saints...

The first group has St. Therese, Blessed Mary, St. George, St. John Bosco (with Grigio ) and St. Dominic Savio (I love how this little one turned out).

I went back and added some detail to the BLessed Mother in the second picture. I thought she looked too plain.

Thank you for the tips! I had just bought Modge Podge too! I was going to seal my St. Patrick with it but he has gone missing. I guess that was providential, if I can find him again.

I painted an Our Lady of Lourdes on the large "angel" shape. At 3+ inches, it was much easier to add details than on the little ones. However, they are not sized right for play in little toy houses and such. Of course, that might be a good thing given my wondering St. Patrick. Now I have to paint a Saint Anthony to go find him.

I'll try posting a photo later today. I love your photos, Melinda! Thank you! They are such a help.

Beautiful! I have apostles made from clothespin dolls -- but they're a little too delicate to handle for my 4 yo. This would be a better option.

Maybe a fine point paint pen would work better than a sharpie and allow you to keep your natural wood faces?

I purchased some of these saints and we really like them but would also like to make some of our own. The one body that is shaped with a "waist" is about 3 3/4 inches tall. I have searched everywhere for that figure and I am unable to find it. I like that one mainly because the large size makes it easier to paint and the waist is helpful with a lot of different saints. Because I have boys we tend to do more with male saints and this shape would be so much better than the angel shape for us. Has anyone seen these anywhere?

God Bless,
Barb

I have been looking. The Craftparts link that Melinda posted above is the only one that has the taller ones in both the angel and the man shapes. No woman shape in the 3"+ size.

I can't find that shape, either. I wonder if the maker has a local source?
Maybe if you have bought some from her she would not mind revealing her source? I wanted to order a couple from her, but the shop is closed again until after Easter. I thought it would be neat for my dc to each have one of their patron saint.

I have to agree with Summer that the older kids like the littler shapes (at least at my house) because they are fun for playing with in little houses.
But I want to make some for my little niece turning one in May, and she would have to have the bigger shape.

We did some painted saints today.
See them at my blogblog

It was not as hard as it seemed once we got going.
Thanks for all the great inspiration ladies.

Trish- your girls (not the painted ones) are beautiful!

If anyone wants a supplier in the UK for these, I found this site

I've just ordered 10 little wooden people from them. Thanks to all for the inspiration, the photos are delightful!

I found the 3 1/2 inch, little wooden people, men and women
here. Can't wait to begin this new family project. It will be enjoyed by my older set and younger set. I love those kinds of projects that interest everybody. Makes for some good family conversation!

I recently placed an order with this company- I am very pleased. The 3.5 inch figures are solid... lots of room to decorate and add details.
