I have looked high and low for the site that sells the painted wooden saints on Elizabeth's blog. I hate to bother her with my little question, so could one of you kind ladies point me in the right direction? They were featured yesterday with Sarah playing at the window.

Catholic Folk Toys, I believe is what you are looking for. Unfortunately, it says they are closed right now, but it seems they will be back soon.

The dolls in Elizabeth's post look like the ones I purchased from Catholic Folk Toys. I would give Catholic Folk Toys a call. I have ordered from them in the past and have been very pleased.
You could also make them yourself if you like to paint. You can purchase the wooden bodies at many craft stores and on-line.

Last time I looked at Catholic Folk Toys the site was still down, but I believe the saints (which are just beautiful) are fairly expensive. I think (but NOT SURE so please check with them) that they were $12-20 each.
That inspired me to make my own. I bought the wooden figures from
Casey's Wood and painted a bunch over the summer. They are not perfect but turned out just fine, and my dc have loved playing with them.

Thank you for the web address! I am painting my own also, given the expense of purchasing. However, those are so beautiful that I was hoping to glean some tips from the photos to make mine a little more special. My children don't mind and enjoy our home made ones immensely. They think I am a great artist.

My recommendation when ordering the wooden pegs for painting....
order a bunch! Once your kids see you painting them, they will want to make some of their own. Our Don Bosco has a band of merry boys that my ds made to keep him company

For additional painting inspiration, take a look at Jessica's blog - A Shower of Roses. She has painted a whole bunch of saints and they are really cute! I believe she painted at least one saint to use with An Alphabet of Catholic Saints to teach the alphabet to her littles. Very inspiring!

I also saw Barbara at Praying for Grace had a fewAlphabet Saints
The little faces on Jessica's remind me of the old Fisher Price Little People. Which makes me think I could do it myself without too much fear.

I use the craft acrylic paints from Michaels. I just pick up whatever is on sale. I have discovered that sharpies work really well for the details. However, you have to wait until the paint is truly dry (such as over night) otherwise they gum up. I just bought a few paint pens in gold (for details) and brown (for faces). I am hoping these help. I am not steady with the tiny brushes needed for sweet faces.

Do you start with a base coat?
Do you draw on what you are basically going for?
I got my order from Casey's Wood (cheap and fast!)
and we are ready to go!

I just finished up St. Patrick this evening. This time I looked for inspiration at Shower of Roses, my Tomie dePaola St. Patrick book, and other saint books. I sketched with pencil the details and then did a base coat. The base coat did obliterate most of those details but at least I had a mental picture of what I was trying to accomplish. Then I painted in the colored details. He looks a lot like the Shower of Roses saint.  On the back, I wrote the name and his feast day. The kids love him, so he is a keeper.
Now I need to put my order in at Casey's Wood.

I was looking at the Catholic Folk Toy site yesterday, and her saints look very tall. There are no measurements given. Does anyone know how big they are?
I found one website, Bayer Wood , that has 3.5 inch tall wooden people. I would like to make some for my nieces and nephews, but the little ones would need a bigger saint to avoid the choking hazard aspect.

I will probably do spray polyeurothane for durability and high shine.

Melinda, my friend had one. I was surprised at how much bigger they were than the "little people" size, but I wouldn't be able to give exact measurements. I'll write her and ask. I think the 3.5 is pretty close. It seems it's usually an angel body for the long flowing "vestments" or the "woman body". It would be nice to find a place that has the 3.5 place. In some ways it's easier to work on a larger "canvas".

has anyone tried using milk paint for crafts?
i'd love to do this as an after-easter activity, but my 14-mo loves to put EVERYTHING right now in his mouth, i'd hate to have to worry about one more thing.
(the link above is for making your own milk paint, but there is milk paint available to buy pre-colored, just mix with water)

Cool about the milk paint, Stef! I learn something new everyday. I had no idea of the history.
Hmmm...if someone has milk allergies, how is that good to use?
And Melinda, my friend wrote me back after measuring her wooden saint:

And I'm just thinking how some enterprising member who is good in workworking and has the tools should make up some bodies to sell in their own Etsy shop.
And then we could have some "sessions" on making some saints together with our own "patterns".
What I would like to do but am running out time is to make a set of Apostles and Jesus for the Cenacle/Last Supper. We like to have displays for Holy Week, but the HOly Thursday is really lacking. I'm taking a little inspiration from the CGS atrium....
