So Michaela, how do you pronounce your name? |

It's hard to explain in writing since even someone repeating it after me has trouble and gives up.
the "ch" does not make the "K" sound.
If you've heard I love you in German (Ich liebe Dich.)it's that Ich sound. Or maybe you've heard milk (milch) in German. It's that exact pronunciation, but without the "L".

Michaela: I don't know German... is it like the throaty "kh," with just a little "k" and mostly a very pronounced "h," like the "Ch" in "Chanukah" makes? (I think...)

This is fun! I'm Mary Alice as a first name, with no middle name. I was the first grandchild on both sides so was named for both grandmothers. I guess they thought Mary Alice was long enough, so skipped a middle name. If I had been a boy, I would have been Winslow Lewis Souther III !! (and that's pronounced SOUTH like the direction + er, not like the word southern. That was always mispronounced.) Oh, btw, by the time my parents had their sons, many years later, they were named Edward and Joseph.

My Mother-in-law had a very close friend whose name was also Michaela pronounced the same way - M-ich-ah-ay-la
I found the pronounciation beautiful but jarring as in the 5th & 7th grades I had Sr. Mary Michaela OP prounced Sr. Mary "Mi kel ah" ... who in 1969 returned to her pre-entry name of Sr. Margaret.
Anyway, I find your pronunciation MUCH more beautiful. Just my 2 cents... .

Well, I was Rachel Leigh...
Mom wanted Mary Katherine or Sarah Elizabeth (and we weren't Catholics!)...of course, I am glad they didn't go with those (since it seemed like every Mary or Sarah in my high school class had one of those middle names)...Dad wanted Charlene (no offense to anyone named Charlene, but it is just *not* me!!!) after the girl he had wanted to marry, but who wouldn't wait for him to return from Vietnam...I think I know why mom nixed that one, lol....
They argued and discussed and argued...and so I ended up eventually being Rachel (it was "unique" at that time/area, and a biblical name)...Leigh was from my father's middle name of Lee...just feminized...
Now, had I been a boy, I'd have been John David (which were my grandfather's and father's names)...My mom would have been John David, or that name would have been her brother's, had she had one...but nope...then I grow up, marry a man whose dad was named John...and we have twin boys...and so we got to name both of our boys after our fathers (John Robert is directly after DH's dad, David Michael is only partly...).
I was once told I looked like a Melissa. I don't know precisely what *that* means, but I've just kind of adjusted to my name. If I could rename myself, though, I'd probably name myself Eleanor Elizabeth--and call myself Nora.
Rachel

Mine is one of those (groan) older sibling choices. "Miss Nancy" was the hostess on Romper Room, as well as there being a Little Golden Book about "Nurse Nancy". It's not such a bad name; common enough that it's not mispronounced, not especially offensive. I would have greatly preferred my middle name as a first name, Ellen. Apparently this was not used because it would have given me the same first and last name as my great-grandmother (my father's grandmother) and my mother didn't want to listen to constant comments that I "belonged" to one side of the family over the other. And for all 5 of my daughters I've wanted to include Ellen as a first or middle name - it's truly one of my all-time favorite names - I love both the sound and the way it looks. Dh isn't as sold on the name as I am....
Peace,
Nancy

Thanks for the laugh Bridget!
Nicole - after a movie my Mom liked.
And Joanne after my Mom!
Cute thread!

Is it fitting that I am posting last here since we started with a variation of Charlotte?
I'm Charlotte and I too was named after someone just like Chari! I was named for my aunt and godmother who died about a month after I was born. She was my mother's closest sister who was terminally ill and my mom actually refused to name me for about a week because she wanted to believe that my aunt was getting better, but she wasn't. Everybody knew it was just a matter of time. So she gave me her name and I have always treasured it (expect for the many times I've had to spell it correctly).
I must admit that I have had all kinds of nicknames and variations thrown at me, but my mother wouldn't let any of them stick; never Chari though. Char, Charlie, Carlotta, Chuck, Chauncy, and Lottie but never Chari. That's really unique!

What a fun thread!
I was named Melanie because my mom was reading Gone With The Wind while pregnant and she liked the character and the name. My middle name - Rose - was for my maternal great-grandmother. (who came over from Hungary all by herself at 17)
When I was young, I used to wish she had named me Scarlett instead.

I love how I got my name.
My name is actually Patricia but I go by Trish. My dad had an older brother, James, who died in the Korean War. He belonged to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. So when I came along they decide to remember him in that way. Kind of unique I think.

I am called "Fuzzy" by just about everybody. When I was a baby I had fuzzy hair, and my family called me that. I can't believe how many years it stuck (Fuzzy wuzzy wuz a bear, fuzzy wuzzy had no hair). I really like the name. I know when I got married I was unsure if I would still have the name, but I prefer it. It's definitely memorable! |

Our first-born daughter was called Fuzzy for years for this same reason. I'm not sure when it wore off, but it was sure cute.
I'm Mary Frances after my great grandmother. She was always called Molly, as was I from the moment I was born. My mom wishes she had just named me Molly from the start since every single first day of school, through college, on the first day when roll was called the teacher would call "Mary" and I'd have to say "I go by Molly". It was pure torture at the time. And it continues to this day--all of my official stuff is under Mary, so credit cards, mortgages, insurance, doctors' offices... I love the name Mary Frances, but "I go by Molly". For this reason, all of my children are called by the names they were given.
I've loved reading everyone's stories!

I think it was for a similar reason that my mom refused to let me have a nickname. She was named Margaret but was called Maggie, Margie, Peggy, you name it! Hey, maybe a nickname thread would be just as much fun.

My name is Summer Denay.
My mother wanted to name me Denay but my father insisted on Summer. He wanted to spell it Sommer. My mom, a little peevish at his insistence, spelled it like the season. She kept the Denay, which is after a good friend who is Cherokee Indian, for a middle name. I am often asked why my parents choose a season for a name. My standard response is that they were hippies. How else does one pick a season? On the bright side, I was never teased much in school over my name because no one could get too creative with Summer. It took all the wind out of their sail.

Ha! I knew how to pronounce it, but I have a cousin with the same spelling and pronunciation.
My name is Paula Jeanne, pronounced Jean, not Jeannie. My mom wanted to name me Joy, but my dad said no, they needed to name me after a Saint. My dad's name was Jerome, so they named me after St. Paula (she worked extensively with St. Jerome). All three of us kids have "J" middle names, because my mom liked the sound of them. I do have an aunt Pauline and an aunt Jean, who have always said I'm named for them, but I'm not.
Funny story about my name....when I was 5 we moved into our new home. My maiden name started with the letters "Go...". Our new next door neighbors had a daughter 2 years older than me. Her name was PAULA JEANNE Go....!!
We've been friend for over 40 years.
