You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My birth first and middle name is Waverley Ward.

Waverley is an old Scottish name. My ancestors from Scotland settled in Mississippi before it was a state. Until me, Waverley was always a man's name. I was named after a favorite uncle before I was born.

Ward is my paternal grandmother's maiden name. I loved my grandmother Josephine so much. She died while I was pregnant with my second daughter, whom we named Josephine in honor of my grandmother. Unfortunately, my daughter, Josephine, was born still at 36 weeks. It gave me great comfort after she died knowing my beloved grandmother was welcoming her. I often think of them being together watching over us all.

That's similar to my story. It was hoped I would be a boy and thus named Michael. Instead I am Michele (spelled with one L which most people don't seem to notice) and my middle name is Marie --because my mom thought it sounded nice.

But hey, those are some pretty good patrons, St. Michael and the Blessed Mother!

I'm Mary Stephanie. Mary because almost all Filipino girls born in my time had some form of Mary as their "first first name". (Just to give you a sampling, in our class of 72 high school graduates, we had Maria Lourdes, Maria Luisa, Maria Carisa, Maria Teresita, Anna Maria, Maria Stephanie, Mary Stephanie (me), Marie Antoinette, Maria Corazon, etc.)

The Stephanie comes from my mom's patron saint, St. Stephen. My mom was born 12/26. I was born 1/6, which was still celebrated as Epiphany at the time. But they didn't want to call me Mary Epiphany, so they decided to go with St. Stephen instead.

The funny thing is -- I had always been called MAY at home and to this day my relatives call me that, but I've always been Stephanie/Steph/Stef to classmates and colleagues. But all legal people and telemarketers call me Mary.

My first name is Loretto, which people always switch to Loretta, but it is after Our Lady of Loreto.

However,my parents and consequently everyone else in my life use my middle name, which is X-Hail (pronounced shy-eel). It is Mayan Indian and means Morning Glory or blue flower. My mom is from Merida, Mexico and we are part Mayan.

My maiden name is O'Brien, so on the first day of school the teacher would get to my name and not being able to pronounce my first name would start looking around for an "O'Brien". I look far more Mexican then Irish, so finally they'd say "O'Brien" and I'd say "here" and they were even more confused.

Chari this is fun ! and who would've known via reading how your name is pronounced ! it didn't even dawn on me yes I've been saying your name as with a ch sound all this time ! I love it both ways , so unique . then the story of how your name was given .
Barbara I laughed when I read your story . I pushed my mum to name my baby brother Kevin because a boy down the street at the time was named kevin I was only 5 yrs after all . get this , she did !
stef , when I met my dh Bob's father's french side all 14 of his aunties & uncles were marie & joseph something !
As a child growing up in a prairie town I can say I hated my name Tirzah Roxie . why oh why was I not a betty or a susan ?
Once I grew and learned where my names came from I am now so so blessed to have them my grandfather whom I never met but was/is a beautiful soul named my mother Tirzah . It is a name from the OT . The name is mentioned a few times but he chose it from the story where a man had passed away and the laws at the time said only sons could inherit land etc. the man only had daughters . The law was changed in order that women would be able to be treated the same as men to inherit as well property left behind . It made me feel good about what my grandfather felt for my mother she was just as importnat to him as his son . So it is an honour to have the name . I looked it up and it means benevolent pleasant pleasing in hebrew .
Then Roxie I received that name from a dear friend of the family a very stocky stuborn Irish lady Roxie Robertson . She like me was always Roxie never a Roxanne
I guess in a way my names sort of balance each other pleasant and stubborn

You know what's weird? I have never asked my parents how they chose my middle name (Jean). I always figured they picked it because it sounded good to them.

Or maybe it's just that I couldn't get past being named for a song...

Jackie Lynn, named after my father Jackie Dee. My mother wanted to name Jacqueline, but my grandmother said I would never learn how to spell it, so my mother divided the name to 2 parts Jackie Lynn.

Now I must say that to this day I am a horrible speller, was grandma right or because I heard the story so many times that I decided "hey I can't spell so why try"...

I'm Mary Clare ... my dad had a great devotion to the Blessed Mother and wanted to name my sister Mary, but Mom's family didn't like Grandpa's sister named Mary (for 60+ years they could be in the same room and not speak! And for Irish folks, that's pretty amazing!) ... anyway, they had to call her AnneMarie.

After 4 boys, I came along and dad put his foot down -- I would be Mary ... Mom added Clare and until her mom died at the age of 100, Grandma ALWAYS called me Marieclaire as one name to avoid having to use the dreaded "Mary" ...

Aren't families silly?

Michaela Maria

A few years ago, I learned my birth mother named me Michaela. When my parents adopted me (at 3 days old), they liked it and decided not to change it.

I didn't have a middle name until I was about 12 years old. I was getting my U.S. citizenship, and part of the paperwork was about my name (I had the choice to change it or add a Middle name). My mom asked me to take her name, Maria. At the time, I was very upset ...basically a kid who probably wanted to take on a movie star's name or some foolish thing. However, I didn't want to hurt my mom's feelings, so I took her name. I love my name now!

Only my mother calls me Michaela. My entire life...no one has been able to say my name correctly. It used to be like fingernails on a chalkboard to be called MiKayla or Michael (ignoring the a). I'm used to it now, but still a little sad I can't use my real name because no one can say it.   If you meet me in real life, friends call me Michelle.

My mother's three sisters all had only boys, and my mom had had one boy already when I was born, so she and my dad just naturally expected that I was going to be a boy. They had picked out "Michael William" as my name. When I was born they were completely blank on girls names, so my mom's oldest sister (who was thrilled to have a niece, btw), suggested my name "Lisa Diane," and my parents liked it. Twenty-nine years later, I married a Michael, and my mom was so happy to finally have a son named Michael!

I didn't find out until we gave one of our girls the middle name of Linnet but my middle name was after my mother's first name of Linda.

But what's important to me is something I decided for myself when I was a teen.. and that.. my first and middle name are me. My last name is a nice connection to family.. but at the time my sister and I had used our step-fathers name for a time and I was old enough to be considering that I would take my husband's name in probably not too many more years. And basically it felt somewhat like my last name was constantly changing and so I took great comfort in that my first and middle name would always be mine.

My parents fought about my name until I was born, mom wanted Angie dad Jethrota ( it was the 70's think jethro tull)

I was born 8 weeks early in dec instead of feb.and there was a rare early bloom of magnolias outside my mom's hospital window so she suggested Maggie

They both decided it was the friendliest name they had ever heard so they named me Maggie Ann.

though i only got called that when i was in trouble it has always been Maggie Annie in the family.

I have a Michaela and her name is pronounced Mik-kel-a (kel like kelly).

Most other Michaelas we know pronounce it Mik-kayla.

I'm curious to find out how Michaela pronounces it.

I am Tracy Leigh, and my mom just liked how it sounded. I really don't like it myself. I was 4 when my little sister was born and I desperately wanted to name her Wendy after the picture of the girl with red pigtails that we would drive by sometimes... yes, it was the billboard for Wendy's fast food restaurant! My parents nixed that one, and she is Tara. Oh, well.

Stacy is from one of my great-great-great-grandmothers! on my mum's side, and Kay was decided by my sisters. They share the middle name of Lee and hated it, so they came up with Kay for me. (The boy name was Kevin Patrick.)

God Bless,

My sister (who was 5 at the time) chose my name; Elizabeth Ann. I have the letter my grandfather wrote to me when I was 3 days old where he says, "I don't know where your folks came up with your name, but I guess after three, they ran out of ideas. But I'll tell you this, I'll murder the first person who calls you Lizzie."
Guess who that person was? I was always Lizzie or Little-bit to my grandparents; still am to my 97 year old grandmother. The worst part of having the name Liz was being called "Lizzard" growing up. My mom says she wishes they would've left off the "E" and called me Lizabeth all along. My DH calls me that.

This is fun! I think they way your pronounce a name is as interesting as how you get the name.

My name is Frances Margaret Mary.
My mother is a third order Franciscan, and named me after St. Francis (with the girl spelling) as well as after her aunt, I think, who's middle name was Frances (most of the time people spell it the masculine way). My mother's name is Margaret. I have dropped the "Mary" with all the legal documents, because only Catholics know that Margaret Mary is one person. LOL

I am called "Fuzzy" by just about everybody. When I was a baby I had fuzzy hair, and my family called me that. I can't believe how many years it stuck (Fuzzy wuzzy wuz a bear, fuzzy wuzzy had no hair). I really like the name. I know when I got married I was unsure if I would still have the name, but I prefer it. It's definitely memorable!
