Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Yep, dh was talking to a man at Starbucks today ... Virginia WANTS to be able to dump the snow in the myriad of rivers but that's AGAINST THE LAW in Virginia! So now they're looking for a state that will take our snow ... there's nowhere for it and it is amazing how you can't see the storefronts as it's piled on the side of the roads (and it's that ugly stuff, mixed with salt and dirt and road slime )

But, we're home ... we have power ... dh doesn't have school ... and we're gearing up for our Winter Olympic unit -- the kids are going to try building a "luge run" in the back (to the front yard) and a "real" igloo!

Where ever you move Mary they seem to get a massive amount of snow following that.

Ridiculous about the law! My goodness!

Dh says he's done a luge run before (grew up in MI) but that its really hard. Good luck, though, it sounds fun (I mean for your kids, not for an old Bama girl like me, lol).

Our boys have been having fun with the snowball maker and castle molds they got for Christmas from my sister!

The snow is really coming down here, but it isn't nearly as pretty as the last snow. That was really big snowflakes and these are almost like sleet but still snow. If its gonna be such a mess, it should at least be pretty, yk?

NO KIDDING -- how does that happen? This is one of those "every 100 years" and we are there (I sound like Walter Cronkite!). Fits nicely with homeschooling though!

In Maryland, localities can apply for a snow dumping waiver - Baltimore City is doing this - but my county isn't bothering, sigh. All the snow from the last storm is just piled up - sometimes in the middle of traffic lanes, which is dangerous.

We've got almost 3" of new snow already.

This SoCal native is not fond of snow...sigh...

On the "count your blessings" side, we have lots of food, full gas tanks, money to pay the neighbor to plow us out, firewood (that took some doing, but we have it), a small grill to cook with if we need to, and we're all here. I have friends without power and friends whose husbands are far away, so I am blessed. I even have good library books to read!

We are getting big, fluffy snow here. Very pretty!

We have food, a woodstove in the garage, cast iron pans, lots of blankets! We just have no way of getting out of the driveway or road should we have an emergency.

Ds18 started his car after leaving the gym (after the snow had started ) and someone locked the door when he got out to clear the windshield. Fortunately, we have roadside assistance and USAA actually had someone who wasn't busy pulling cars out of ditches. They got his car open and he got safely to a friend's house. He had called us to bring the extra key, but by that point we were already stranded!

Settling down for a warm, cozy movie with dh. Praying for no more drama, it has been a very dramatic day!

Michele,

That reminds me of the back-to-back heavy snowstorms we had in ...'95 or '96? My 14yo ds was an infant and I never had to go out in it or really see it...but they needed front end loaders to clear out the roads. There was over 4' of snow on the ground and it was hard to drive anywhere even after it was cleaned up due to how much snow was piled at the corners (restricting vision). People were shoveling off their roofs so they wouldn't have damage!

Poor dh..so much shoveling and I was snuggled with my newborn nursing in a recliner..

It is so odd for those of your south of us to get so much. We just got about 3-4" ...usually the reverse happens...we get buried and you get a little...but that will change over the next day or so...with wind to boot. I'm just praying for dh who will still be mandated to get to work ~pray for him, will you? He has to take the supervan and not his 4X drive vehicle as it is in the shop

On the other hand..the snow shoveling business will be a boon this week!

Know what's even stranger - we are what less than an hour from you Donna Marie? - and right now we have NO SNOW - we got nothing from that last storm.

But we've got big plans for tomorrow - if dh's school is closed we are going to have an early Fat Tuesday (well, a Fat Wednesday, I guess) and make donuts!! YUM!!

We'll be praying for everyone's safety but we are doing major snow dances over this way!!

Yes, it is just under an hour, depending on how fast you drive

You gave me a great idea...I am going to do something like this for dh to surprise him when he gets home. He was called into work extra-early and will have to fight his way home across rt.80....I think some serious pampering is in order!

My twins went out with fliers yesterday for snow shoveling. They were advertising "Tired of Shoveling SNOW? Call on the TWINS to help! It's like being in two places at once!"

They already got a job...hopefully there will me more!

Oh yes I remember it well --it was '96 and I was pregnant with Mary --my now 13 yr. old who is out shoveling as I type. The snow drifts were over my head and some of the city streets weren't cleared for a week --ours included! In the end they used front loaders and it wasn't the city but a local business that got us out. Our street then was really narrow and the front loader was popping mirrors off of cars as it went by, but no one cared --we just wanted out! I remember walking to the store (dragging a laundry basket with ropes) only to find there was hardly any food left! Do you remember that we then had a sudden thaw a people basements were flooding? My neighbor at the time was a buiness that operated out of a big garage. They had cleared their flat roof by throwing all the snow down into our alley --when it started melting it start flooding my basement! Oh what a mess that was.

Good for them! My teens informed me as I was coming down the stairs this morning that they'd already made $60. I said "great, you can buy lunch!"

I stand corrected by the way, they aren't out shoveling right now --they are building a huge fort!

BTW, I just heard they are calling for more snow on Monday and Tuesday. Texas is looking better all the time!

Kudos to the kids! (I told the girls the same thing)

Wow! More snow?

Best wishes with your discernment! We too are still contemplating a move south...maybe to VA. Why does it seem that so many lovely Catholic homeschooling families are bugging out of the northeast? It is getting harder to be here with one income, that is for sure!

When it snows ... like it's been doing ... kids play and have a blast ... dh shovels and catches up on schoolwork (and even got the TAXES done this time around) ... and me? Here's what I do ...
