Lindsay, I just love trundles. I'm always swooning over an adorable daybed with trundle (for my daughter, not for me). I never knew I was such a girlie girl until I had a daughter. Anyway. No, we dont' really have the space for it. I don't think. I'll mention it to dh and see if we can turn the beds the long way and make it work. That might not be a bad idea.

I've just done a lot of review reading and IKEA bunk beds get overwhelmingly positive reviews. Lofts were more mixed and it does seem that a lofted bed without another stabilizing frame underneath would be more problematic. Someone also pointed out that the floor displays in the stores are put together very quickly and moved frequently. I think that as long as the frame is hardwood my dh can assemble it as strongly as he could build from scratch.

Thanks for helping me arrange my house, everyone!

Susan I'm new to the forum, but I just wanted to pass this on.   I agree with what Bethany wrote - if you have some good second hand shops near you, check them out.   You'd be amazed what you can find. But it does often take a few trips to find just what you're looking for.   But a gently used good quality sofa lasts so much better than a new, but poorly made one.   I can't say much about Ikea as we haven't bought their furniture.

Have you considered a foam mattress for your son?   I know they're more expensive than the regular spring mattresses, but with his tendency not to roll over much, it can do wonders to relieve pressure points and give him a really comfortable night's sleep.   We got ours at Costco, and while it's not this specific one - ours is 12 inches - this one sounds like it might be great for your son.   I don't know how to do the links so nicely, but here it is anyway:

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11472246&wh se=BC&Ne=4000000eCat=BC|93|1924|67413&N=4018921&Mo=20&pos=5 &No=15&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=67413&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDes c1〈=en-US&Sp=C&ec=BC-EC11879-Cat1924&topnav=

Another way to add some softness to a regular mattress is to get a memory foam topper.   You can buy a king size and double it up for even more comfort.

I also second the crate style furniture - I miss the This End Up furniture - it was awesome!

Has anyone had experience with the TV/entertainment centers? I need something and want shelves with cabinet doors (not glass 'cause who wants to see the mess?).

As far as sofas; I don't know about the IKEA ones, but I own a Broyhill one that we purchased in 1995. It's still with us and I have finally slipcovered it this past week. The frame is very important in my opinion.

I looked at entertainment centers too and they also seemed so unstable/cheap. I found this blog that gives plans to make Pottery Barn furniture:

Susan,

We have the Ikea bunk bed you mentioned. I was a little scared that my 4yr old might fall out. It hasn't happened yet and he is about to turn 8! The side panels are pretty high...

It has held up well. My husband put it together really tight. It only squeaks if I try to climb on the ladder

I also have the Ikea bunk bed you were looking at Susan, and we love it. The boys are 6 and 4 and are really rambunctious on it but it has held up well for over two years now.

How about their sofa slip covers? Our sectional that we've had for, gosh, 8 years now, is wore out and also too big for our new house.   I was looking that this
sofa and these chairs. They both have removable slip covers, which appeals to me because of the washablity, but do they move around a lot? Anyone?

I can only speak to seeing these at friends houses and I would say they are a LOT better than a DIY slipcover you might get at Target or something. The slipcover is under the cushions and fitted exactly for the sofa so they fit pretty well.

I'm laughing that you have furniture too big for your huge new house But, of course, I understand that it's all about layout.

Yeah, it's kind of comical - but it is the layout. Neither the living room or family room have the wall space for a sectional, and it doesn't work right when it's apart. I actually think that a sofa and a few chairs will give us more sitting space than the sectional anyway. Oh, and besides, we do have a room in the new house that the only furniture we have for it will be our piano!!

We have had one of those sofas and also a love seat and ottoman for going on 5 years and they are great. The 'slipcovers' aren't what I typically think of as slip covers - more like removeable upholstery - and they don't move around. They also wash really well and the material that covers the cushions inside the washable covers is water resistant so even when the cushions get WET, it doesn't soak into the stuffing.

My only criticism is that the frames aren't as heavy as you would find with higher end furniture. They are plenty sturdy and stand up to lots of heavy use, but they do scooch around quite a bit if you have wood floors and don't put something non-slip under the feet.
