Has anyone tried using all 4 books in one year? Or used them with Foster's books? I would like to do a "survey" of history next year with my 6th and 7th graders. I would like for them to get an idea of the scope and patterns in history. I looked at all four books at the library last week, and I am not sure if this is doable...
Any suggestions for a survey course?

You would have to do more than 4 chapters a week to fit in everything in one year. I think it could be done, but I would worry about it being hard to follow and understand at that pace.
Sonlight has schedules for using some of the Foster books alongside (cores 6 and 7). You could get an idea of what is doable by looking at their catalogue and then choosing the ones that most appeal to you.

This is what we did, too.
I used the SOTW volume I CDs to offer a bit of context on a period, while our primary history still came from living books. I did not use the activity guide - we found keeping up with our Book of Centuries and mapwork was enjoyable enough and didn't feel we needed to add anything else. Like Anne, I found that we enjoyed listening to the CD's a lot when we were on the go in the car. The kids liked to follow along in the book, but we all preferred the Jim Weiss narrated CD.
I used Blackline Maps of World History and they complement SOTW nicely.
For weaving in living books, I made a booklist from various sources, but a couple of good starting points are:
** Reading Your Way Through History
** recommended reading for RC HISTORY volume I for grades 1-3

My son is just now listening to Vol. 1 as a review and filling in the missing details verbally. There are many when you consider he's in 7th grade. When we get to the part that is no longer review (he's currently studying the Roman Empire), we'll be using many living books as supplements. But we're breezing through it now. Our kids listen to it during lunch. This makes for a VERY quiet meal.

BTW Jennifer, I wanted to thank you for your post. It cleared up a lot of questions I had about the activity book and the actual text. Though Jim Weiss references the text in the CDs, I just don't think they're necessary. Get a good set of history maps, and you have what you need. He speaks so well as to allow the listener to visualize what he's telling you as well (for instance, how Upper and Lower Egypt were named and what the Nile Delta looks like).
The other thing I forgot to mention is that while, when you study a subject on your own you can get greater depth, there's a lot of breadth in these CDs to include Ancient India and China, among other places.

Can anyone tell me if there is an advantage in using the revised activity book over the older copy? I think there are only two editions, right?
Thanks... my dc are really enjoying the book- so much so that I am contemplating buying the activity manual. The book I have is the revised edition.

Updating....
I did buy a used copy of the activity manual for under $10, and it has been a huge help for me. The maps are all there and ready to go, as well as many easy crafts that my dc are enjoying. PLus- the book lists!
Sometimes it is just so worth it to have everything pulled together for you. It can make the difference between having the intention to do something and truly getting it done.... at least at my house

Satori Smiles has a nice compilation of resources for use with SOTW. Unbelievable listing of main topics covered, suggested spine readings, relevant read-along books, DVDs, activities and Internet links....BY CHAPTER!!!! (up to chapter 13)....I think she's updating as she goes along.
