Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My first was a fetal-distress c-section, and I had three successful vbacs following. All three were induced labors (contra the advice) to one extent or another, because I didn't ever naturally go into labor: two were induced with pitocin, one by breaking my waters, the one time they didn't just break on their own to signal the onset of non-labor . . . thus the pitocin the other times.

I did have all three without any pain medication, except for some gas-and-air (aka laughing gas) for the one baby I had in England, where they offer you such things. #2 was a long, hard labor once the pitocin kicked in; the other two were relative breezes. The worst thing about the last birth (just over 6 years ago) was finding a doctor who would even consider delivering me vaginally, and I did have to consent to being designated "high-risk" (even though my #3 child and #2 vbac had been delivered by a midwife on a mat on the hospital floor in England) and to much heavier monitoring than I'd ever encountered before. The birth itself was easy, and the baby is now out riding her bike. At the time, with a toddler and two older children at home, I was grateful not to have a major surgery to recover from.

This is a nice thread. It sure brings back the memories! I have had TEN v-bacs!

My first child was born by c-sec due to brow presentation. I was only 19 years old and I still remember the doctor saying, "I will give you and your husband time to think it over." Of course, we felt there was no choice! The doctor had warned of the dangers and that was that. Excited to be in labor and yet fearing the unknown, we went to the hospital way too early - as soon as I was sure it was labor though definitely EARLY labor. (I guess I didn't listen too well in the classes!) I never dilated past 1 cm and they were about to discharge me so that I could labor at home when I hear, "Ought OH!" They accidentally broke my water. I had an emergency c-section.

Since then I have had TEN, yes, thanks be to GOD, ten v-bacs. After that first birth, I asked around for encouragement to v-bac. I was told to ask about the c-section rates of the different doctors and to find out which doctors were very supportive of v-bacs. I remember during my first pregnancy a doctor came to talk to our childbirth classes and I felt I was suppose to change to him, but didn't. Well, my husband and I made the switch to him after our first baby.

As far as homebirths, I have a close friend who has had several homebirths after several c-sections and a v-bac, but my dh never wanted me to have a homebirth and I respected that. He was VERY scarred at the delivery of our first child.   One decision we did make though, like some of the women on this thread, was to chose to labor at home as much as possible to avoid harmful interventions. Several times we felt we had stayed home too long; once I got there already dilated to 10. That was our sixth child whose cord was wrapped around her neck twice and the labor responsible for me saying to my husband on our way to the hospital as he approached a RED light, "Honey, DON'T stop at the RED LIGHT!!!"   After the sixth child (we often chose to labor in our van in the hospital's parking garage as we prayed our rosary until I felt we must go in.) Being close to the hospital, I think helped me relax. I know - that is strange, but it made me feel secure and that I was close enough for help if I needed it. We have so many stories - some funny, some scary like the sixth child, but thanks be to God all the v-bac labors went well.

My prayers are with you and your baby for a wonderful peaceful v-bac !

We're very fortunate in living about five and a half blocks from the hospital, so I'll (I hope) be spending early labour at home and able to get to the hospital in about two minutes, including loading me into the car. We don't even have to go through any lights.

Thank you for all the stories. They're very encouraging. The new little one is presently breech but has lots of time to turn around.

I have had two vbacs, but I know that one of the hospitals here will not do them.

Best of luck with your delivery.
