Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Emma begins Sunday,Jan.24 at 9/8c on PBS.
It will air on 1/24,1/31 and 2/7. I believe it is a mini-series.

I had a bookmark from the library. Also, 2/14 is Northanger Abbey and 2/21 is Persuasion. 9/8c

Oh,Lisa do let us know what you watch and if your daughter enjoys it.

A&E with Collin Firth.

The new one was ok, but I really didn't care for the ending. I didn't feel it was in keeping with the mores of the period the book describes.

Here is the link to Emma. I'm sorry I didn't think to link it earlier! In addition to the trailer for the series, there are some very neat links toward the bottom of the page!

God Bless,
Stacy

We love both, but my girls are more partial to the new movie.

My Molly plays the music from the new version on the piano ("Dawn", etc), so I am partial to the new one for that.

However, I love the scenerly in both also.

Ok, I can't decide...the A & E version is more of the version closer to the book, and the new one is different, but beautiful.

We are BIG fans here at home though.

Definitely the A&E version with Colin Firth - he is Mr. Darcy to me, and always will be.

I liked the old Greer Garson one OK, but the dresses they wore in that movie are totally inappropriate to the period - IIRC, they are like (US) Southern belle pre-Civil War dresses!    small detail maybe but it bugged me.

I've only seen the newer one once and didn't like it much, though there were parts of it that were nice.

I have both the A&E and the newer versions. Just watched the newer one (Kiera Knightly & Matthew MacFayden) yesterday while matching socks and folding laundry. :)

There are some things I like about the newer version. I think I prefer the newer Charlotte Lucas and Mr. Bennet (Sutherland senior...can't think of his name) and Mr. Collins are quite as good as the A&E versions just different takes on those characters. Mrs. Bennet is also very good but not quite as aggravating as the a&e version, probably because she gets less screen time. I did like that Mary Bennet was more of a human character instead of a caricature in the newer version; a girl who reads sermons and is serious doesn't have to be ugly, after all!

My peeves about the newer version are Knightly's mannerisms (the biting the fingers thing and her smirking--OK in pirates of carribean but out of place here) and her level of acting--I don't feel that her character believes in the conventions of her time--her outrage and humiliation at Lydia's elopement don't seem believable to me. I loved Matthew MacFayden in MI5, but he just seems lost in his costume here.

But my biggest peeve is the HAIR!!! ha ha ha Every single person but Caroline Bingley and Lady Catherine has terrible messy dirty looking hair. Rich people had hairdressers and they did not pay money to make their hair look like grunge rockers dressing up! OK, superficial rant over....

But the landscapes and the house in the newer version are VERY nice. Seems like a real house that is lived in. I also like the inclusion of the farm animals in the daily routine.

I agree!

I'm also an A&E/Colin Firth lover.
But one thing I liked about the new P&P -- I think someone else mentioned this -- is how the Bennet girls looked like they were the right ages-- YOUNG girls, not quite women. Jennifer Ehle is too grown up looking to play a twenty year old!
I also loved Jane Bennet in the new version. I am not partial to Jane's looks in the A&E version --she just doesn't fit the part of the area's greatest beauty. In the new version she is lovely.
