Here is an interesting conversation between baristas about problems with sengWare cups chipping from about 2 years ago. They indicate that the company was aware of the problem and took steps to correct it. I would love to see some reviews regarding scratching which seems to me by family's biggest problem.

Also, according to this article, sengWare is MIC but if they certify that it is lead and cadmium free, I might still consider it. The colors are so pretty and I like the shape of the pieces better than Fiestaware.

What I'm really shooting for eventually is to have all white stuff, that way even when things break and I have to mix and match it my cupboard won't look too cluttered.
One more brand I like: Apilco -- made in frAnce and the couple pcs I have have lasted quite a while now

The enamelware will get marks on them.. but it's *on* the enamel not *in* the enamel if that makes sense.. a bit of baking soda or cleanser will polish the marks off when they become apparent.
LeeAnn - I also found the enamelware mugs don't hold up, neither do the cereal bowls.. but the plates and the flat bowls (salad bowls?)are doing great.
I'm thinking maybe a mix of a white corelle (though I hate how it shatters.. really hate it) for cereal bowls especially and the enamelware because I really like my enamelware.. I have the yellow and white splatterware with a black edge.
Though the camping ones with the stainless steel rim (red with white speckles) seem to hold up really well.

We have used these every day for more than 10 years and I have been very happy with them. They will break if dropped on a ceramic tile floor, but I have dropped them on hardwood several times without any damage and they don't chip even with a lot of rough handling from mommy loading the disherwasher in a hurry and small children unloading it as part of their morning chores.
By way of comparison, the enamelware I bought less than 3 years ago is vety chipped and rusting.

Sara, I have been looking for plain white dinnerware, and I really like the shapes.
I grew up with Corelle, which I LOVE, but hubby hates (funny, he doesn't empty the dishwasher and realize how light they are!). He bought me some dishes from Macy's that are heavy..hate them. One of these days, I am going to buy some more plain white Corelle.
But, with these William-Sonoma dishes, they are beautiful too.
Are they heavy? I am getting old!

I love enamelware. She shared with me that she thought the steel rims made a big difference in durability. I hope she'll chime in here. Her enamelware came from Golden Rabbit. |

Just discovered this thread! I like our enamelware for every day, but it does show scratches. I'm okay with that. Also, the bowls chip, but the plates have not. We also have porcelain tile floors, so, anything that hits them that has potential for breaking will break. I think that the enamelware bowls might last longer on a different floor. (I still use the bowls, even though they are chipped.)
I had cups, though, from golden rabbit's spatterware line, and they were not as durable by far as the bowls have been. They chipped right away on our floor. I think that perhaps the thicker layers of enamel are more prone

Oh, and I have the bluebird pattern which is not bumpy like the spatterware.

Ooh - I really really really like these Williams and Sonoma ones. Maybe I could try them out with just one set of plates and mugs and see how they survive.
How big are the dinner plates - our current plates are HUGE and it is so hard fitting them in the dishwasher. These plates look like they are a nice size.

Do they show permanent scratch marks form silverware or anything like that? I don't mind scratch marks that buff out, but the grey ones that stick just make the dishes still look dirty to me.

I would highly recommend doing that if you can. I was all set to get a ton of Fiestware dishes and I am so glad I started with a small set first when I saw how poorly they held up in my opinion.

From Williams-Sonoma:9 3/4" dinner plates, 7" salad plates, 9" soup/pasta bowls. The 30-piece set includes 7-oz. cups and 6 1/4" saucers; the 24-piece set includes 11.5-oz., 3 1/2" high mugs. Each set includes six place settings

A few of the dinner plates have a faint gray mark or two, but I'd never noticed them until I went to look just now so I don't know whether they would buff out or not.

They are considerably heavier than Corelle, but they are lighter than the department store ceramic dinnerware I have used.
A set of cereal bowls is fairly inexpensive (and our family at least can never have too many cereal bowls) so maybe that would be a good try-and-see set?

Forgot to mention, a good place to look for durable stuff is restaurant supply stores. Their dinnerware has to take a lot of abuse, so tend to last longer. The one near us has both used and new stock.
For example, instawares. I like that you can buy in bulk as it's cheaper that way. Plus it works for larger families.

I"ve never had all white dishes, but I think they are lovely and elegant. And just think of the possibilities for tablecloths, candles, flowers to add all sorts of color and interest to the table!
Peace,
Nancy

Several years ago we got rid of our heavy pottery dishes and bought white Corelle (it has a swirly pattern around the rim). I can't tell you how much I love it. If you have a lot of place settings (we do), it stacks so nicely in the cabinet and the dishwasher. I have never broken a piece, even dropping it on our granite counters or tile floor. It doesn't show scratches from our flatware, either. It is easy to add to it, since Walmart carries it, as well as the Corning outlet.

I *JUST* ordered all new dinnerware and serving pieces. I ordered the Corelle, two sets each of classic cafe red and blue, making for place setting for 16. I ordered all new serving pieces in splatterware from Cox Country Gifts. She called after I placed my order to inform me she has gone out of business - she helped me rework my order for the pieces she had left and gave them to me 1/2 off!! :) SCORE!! So I will have the classic red and blue Corelle pieces with various colored splatterware accents! We are hoping to entertain more in our new home, since we may actually have the room, and I am really excited to have a decent looking table set.
All together, the 4 sets and serving pieces ran me $175. (some of it covered by a Penny's gift card.)

Fiestaware here -
and I can't begin to say how much I love it.
Hubby had to talk me into buying it initially, I looked at it and thought grandma's dishes.
We lived in Alabama when I purchased it at a 'seconds' outlet called the "Dish Barn" - I later learned they also have one in Canton, TX. (near home and family for us)
Over the year we lived in AL we slowly purchased a 14 piece set (they have a buy 6 get one free deal-that is why 14 in case you are wondering) at a bargain. Like: $2.99 for the dinner plates, a bit less than that for the desert plates and bowls.
I love the stuff. I think the problem isn't the dishes as much as ceramic tile floors in our family. Gads! I am glad we don't have that horrid flooring anymore.
Fiestaware is heavy (which I love, btw) durable and I have a mix & match set of all the colors - I love bright colors! Seeing as how I purchased seconds, they were imperfect to start with, so I don't mind a strange looking spot or something.
Our family is in DFW, so stopping in at Canton is easy enough. And, if it isn't I can send a family member... we all love the flea market anyway
